LEADING THE CHARGE: (From left) Manager Environment & City Compliance Mark Gardiner, Manager Procurement David Butterfield, Director Community Janice Summerhayes and Mayor Greg Conkey launch Council's first electric vehicle, which is set to save $1500 a year in operating costs.
Electric car, light upgrades to save money Wagga Wagga City Council’s first 100 per cent electric vehicle is plugged in and ready to hit the road. The Hyundai IONIQ Electric can travel up to 280km on a single charge and is set to save an average of $1500 per year in operating costs, along with zero exhaust emissions and reduced carbon emissions. The introduction of the electric vehicle is part of Council’s
commitments to the Cities Power Partnership program, which it joined in December 2017. “On any given day, Council staff can be travelling around the city and the region for meetings, community events, consultation sessions, inspections or other tasks,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “This electric vehicle will be ideal for the numerous short distance trips for staff attending and is about 70 per cent cheaper to power per kilometre than a standard combustion engine. “The charging station at the Civic
Centre will provide a 100 per cent recharge in about four-and-a-half hours using low cost off-peak power. “Given its 280km range, trips to other centres such as Albury and Canberra that have fast charging stations are also possible. A 100kw fast charging station can power the car to 80 per cent capacity in less than 25 minutes.” The next step in reducing costs and emissions for Council will be Civic Centre lighting upgrade works, which were approved at the 22 July Ordinary Council Meeting. Existing lighting in the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, the Museum
of the Riverina Historic Council Chambers site and the Wagga Wagga City Library will be replaced with new energy efficient LED lighting. The total estimated savings from the lighting works will be just over $56,000 per year, while the improved lighting at the gallery will also attract a broader range of art experiences and exhibitions. Outside of the Civic Centre, sporting groups have also benefited from new LED lighting at Harris Park and French Fields. Cranes have installed new poles and floodlighting over recent weeks, with rugby league and
softball players already reaping the benefits. Along with lower power consumption and reduced maintenance, the LED lights attract less insects and have been designed to reduce light spillage on adjoining properties. Council’s future energy savings initiatives include the Oasis integrated energy saving project, the Civic Centre solar panel project, Tarcutta Truck Stop lighting upgrade, airport energy saving project and the Livestock Marketing Centre solar panel project.

The first exhibition as part of Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s local artists program is now open. Juju Roche grew up in Mangoplah and in Unearth she brings the natural world into her artwork. Each piece was created in a repurposed woolshed on her childhood farm, with paintings left out in elements and infused with the sunlight, rain and debris. Juju’s exhibition is the first in Council’s 2019/20 Community Gallery Program, which is open to applications from artists across the Riverina. Through a competitive application process, artists are selected by a panel of industry specialists to hold an exhibition at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The gallery provides selected artists with a supportive environment, high profile exhibition space, professional development and exposure and promotion of their creative arts practices.
“The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery continues to support artists whose practice demonstrates innovation, artistic merit and relevance to a local audience,” Gallery Director Caroline Geraghty said. “We had a competitive field of applications this year, both in strength and volume. ”The first artist to exhibit as part of this program is Juju Roche, whose large-scale paintings are integrated with nature. “Juju graduated from the Sydney College of Arts in 2006 and has exhibited on numerous occasions, both solo and collaboratively. “The selection of artists for the 2019/20 program highlights the strength and breadth of creative practice in the region and celebrates a diverse and innovative range of creative expression. “The other successful applicants in 2019/20 are Joel Markham, Michael Agzarian, Fiona Durman, Robyn Veneer Sweeny and Louise LOCALS IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Mangoplah artist Juju Roche in her studio this year ahead of her exhibition at Halsey.” Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The Mayoress Presents
LIBRARY'S RIVERINA SCIENCE FESTIVAL IS BACK FROM 11-17 AUGUST WITH FUN-FILLED PROGRAM Calling all budding scientists, the 2019 Riverina Science Festival is almost here. Held from 11 to 17 August and coordinated by Wagga Wagga City Library, the festival takes science to the kitchen, river, classroom and into the future. “The 2019 Riverina Science Festival starts with a diverse mix of activities and workshops throughout National Science Week, before culminating in a jam-packed day of fun and new experiences,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “We are fortunate to have Dr Rina Fu join this year’s festival. Her work as a scientist has taken her from state-ofthe-art labs in the US to the jungles of Papua New Guinea, and is a parasite expert.
GOOEY FUN: The Riverina Science Festival is jampacked with hands-on science experiments and experiences. This year's festival will take place from 11 to 17 August. “Throughout the week some of our most popular events will return, such as Kitchen Science Storytime in the library and the
National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP) Community Science Day for local school students.
“Some of this year’s new events include Quiet Science sessions designed for people on the autism spectrum and a Life on the Levee walk. “The major highlight of the Riverina Science Festival will be the Future World event on from 10am to 4pm Saturday 17 August, which has a huge mix of science-based activities across nine sites in the Civic Centre.” For details on events across the festival and for the jam-packed Future World line-up, go to wagga.nsw.gov. au/library/whats-on. This month Council completed improvement works at the Brucedale Hall (pictured) and Ladysmith Rural Fire Service (RFS) shed. At Brucedale, toilets were installed in a newly constructed addition to the rear of the heritage-listed hall. NSW Rural Fire Service District Coordinator, Riverina Zone, Scott Conlan said volunteers and local residents will all benefit from the new facilities at the hall, which is adjacent to the Brucedale RFS station. “Sections of the tin cladding from the two original drop toilets, now demolished, was re-purposed in the extension to meet heritage requirements,” he said. “A toilet was also installed inside the Ladysmith RFS shed.
“The upgrades in the Riverina Zone are part of a state-wide initiative to install toilet facilities at every RFS shed. “Wagga Wagga City Council manages the upgrade and construction works at the 32 RFS sheds located within the
local government area on behalf of the RFS,” he said. New sheds are planned for Umbango RFS and The Gap RFS, with development applications currently under consideration for both.

YOUNG TALENT TIME: Wagga Mayoress Jenny Conkey gets in the groove of her charity concert The Supernova with students from Willans Hill School (from left) Max, Maggie, Charlie who is the school captain, Charlie and Cody (front). The students will play the djembe drums during a performance at the concert.
Young school stars to shine at The Supernova on 10 August Wagga Wagga’s shooting stars are fine tuning their stage performances in readiness for next week’s Mayoress Charity Concert at the Civic Theatre. The countdown is on to this year’s The Supernova concert featuring talented local high school musicians, vocalists and dancers in two spectacular shows on Saturday 10 August, 2019. Wagga Mayoress Jenny Conkey has urged community members to snap up tickets to the two shows and reminded people this is a concert for the general public and is not limited to students’ families. “It’s important for the wider community and general public to get behind and support the concert for a number of reasons,” Mrs Conkey said. “This is about our youth achieving good things in the community. All proceeds raised will go to Carevan Wagga Inc. so this is an opportunity to be entertained by some of the best young talent in the city whilst assisting a local project doing some outstanding charity work. “There are some brilliant young performers in our community and I saw this year’s concert as an opportunity for them to take centre stage and
show us their best. "Opportunities to showcase their talents don’t happen every day so I want the focus to be on them. “I really encourage the wider community and general public to get behind The Supernova and support the concert. Get a group of friends together and buy your tickets to this great show.” Schools involved include Kildare Catholic College, Kooringal High, Mater Dei Catholic College, Mount Austin High, Shepherds Park, The Riverina Anglican College, Wagga Christian College, Wagga High and Willans Hill School. There will also be performances from students of the Riverina Conservatorium of Music. The Supernova is on Saturday, 10 August 2019 at 2pm and 7.30pm at the Civic Theatre Wagga Wagga. The Supernova concert is being supported by major sponsor Estella Rise, and also TAFE and Regional Express. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Civic Theatre ticket office, by phone 6926 9688 or online at civictheatre.com.au Ticket prices are: Adults: $22, Concession: $18, Group 4+ $18, Child U15: $18.
RECORD TURNOUT: A huge amount of volunteers helped plant seedlings at National Tree Day.
An upgrade of the sewer main alignment, connecting Central Wagga Wagga homes and residents with the Narrung Street Sewage Treatment Plant, is underway. Two kilometres of new 56cm diameter PVC pipe is being laid along Kincaid Street, Beckwith Street and Billagha Streets to join the treatment plant infrastructure. Cedar, Kurrajong and other trees on the Beckwith Street footpath, adjacent to the racecourse, will be removed in conjunction with this work. Council’s arborist has identified these trees as dead, or in poor condition. The trees will be replaced in the winter 2020 tree planting program. Traffic controls are in place Monday to Saturdays while the upgrade and tree removal works are underway. Works will be completed in midNovember, weather permitting.

VOLUNTEERS TURN OUT FOR NATIONAL TREE DAY
Thank you to the 175 green thumbs who lent a hand to plant more than 1500 native grasses, shrubs and tree seedlings as part of National Tree Day on Sunday 28 July. This year’s event was held at Birramal Conservation Area, which is known to be frequented by a number
of threatened native species such as Superb Parrot, Yellow-bellied Sheath-tailed Bat, and the locally endangered Squirrel Glider. As the plants grow they will provide food and habitat for the threatened fauna as well as a fantastic display when the plants are in flower for both Lloyd
residents and the people who frequent the conservation area. “Many of the threatened and endangered animals in our Local Government Area rely on this vegetation community to survive,” Environmental Education Officer Sam Pascall said.
“The 1500 different plants added to Birramal Conservation Area will help connect fragmented vegetation.” This year, Council also introduced corflute tree guards that can be reused for years to come instead of the soft plastic tree guards.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN Last week, Council endorsed funding over $208,000 through our Annual Grants Program to 57 projects across the local government area. I sat on the assessment panels with community representatives and staff in assessing the Connected Rural and Urban Communities, Arts & Culture, Local Heritage and Natural
Environment categories and was so impressed with the quality of the projects and also the passion of residents working together to connect our community. It never ceases to amaze me how far communities can make grant funding go. For such relatively small amounts of a few thousand dollars, volunteers can deliver significant outcomes for their groups and the wider community. One of my favourite
projects funded is a fairly straightforward one, but one that will have a big impact for the applicants. The Bonsai Society were successful in gaining funding for some signage to encourage the community to come and visit the club during open days. Located in the Association of Riverina Cultural Clubs (ARCC) Centre on Tarcutta Street, the Bonsai Society are really interested to get the word out around
0418 445 131 | councillor.keenan@wagga.nsw.gov.au
their activities and share their passion with the community. Prominent signage to attract people in will make a big difference in helping the society continue to grow (pardon the pun). Another project that will be quite prominent when completed is for the restoration of the 2WG sign. This was a project funded through the Local Heritage category. The 2WG sign is such an iconic piece of built heritage for the whole community, I’m
excited to see it once again come to life. A project that really resonated with me was funding the purchase of children’s books in the Bangla language for the Bangladeshi community. The preservation of language is something so important to Bangladeshi communities around the world as five people died in 1952 defending their right to speak their language. Their sacrifice is celebrated each year
on 21 February as International Mother Language Day. This project reminds me of the importance of language for all communities. There are over 6000 languages spoken across the world with nearly half of those endangered. In Australia, we have over 100 languages endangered, including Wiradjuri. It’s through the actions of community that we can help retain language for future generations
and connect children to their culture. Seeing volunteers advocate and driving the growth of communities is a real privilege and gives me a sense of pride that our community is one that cares for each other and is always aspiring to make our city a better place.
