BETTER CONNECTED: Glenfield residents Beryl and John Stevens testing out the new footpath on Nardoo Street, which they say has made it easier to get around their neighbourhood.

Works ramp up on city’s footpaths The city’s footpath network is set to be reinvigorated, with Wagga Wagga City Council continuing to roll out more than one million dollars’ worth of footpath upgrades across the city this financial year.

Residents have welcomed Council’s efforts to improve accessibility and connectivity within the existing footpath network. Glenfield resident John Stevens said the new section of footpath completed in Nardoo Street by Council late last year is terrific and makes it much easier to get around. “The new footpath on Nardoo Street is like a freeway,” Mr Stevens said. “It makes it a lot easier to travel down Fernleigh Road in my wheelchair to head to the Rules Club for lunch.” More improvements will soon be seen across the city, following Council’s resolution at the January Council Meeting

on Monday night to accept a tender to deliver more than $400,000 of works to upgrade the footpath network. These new works will occur across Forest Hill, Tolland, Mount Austin and Kooringal over the coming months. Letters will be sent to residents who are impacted prior to works starting and will detail specific locations, works to be completed and project timeframes. The completed and planned works align with important documents within Council’s planning framework, including the Community Strategic Plan 2040 – Wagga View and Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017–21.

As per Council’s recently updated engineering guidelines, new footpaths will be 1.5 metres wide to allow sufficient space for pedestrians and/or permitted wheeled devices, such as mobility scooters or prams, to pass side-by-side. Where necessary pram ramps will also be installed. “For a long time, the community has been calling for a better connected footpath network across the city,” Councillor Dan Hayes said. “Residents will soon have access to more assigned walkways so kids can walk to school, residents can go to the local store, and people can visit their neighbours without having to walk on roads or navigate other terrain.”
