Weekly information from us to you

BETTER CONNECTED: Glenfield residents Beryl and John Stevens testing out the new footpath on Nardoo Street, which they say has made it easier to get around their neighbourhood.

Works ramp up on city’s footpaths The city’s footpath network is set to be reinvigorated, with Wagga Wagga City Council continuing to roll out more than one million dollars’ worth of footpath upgrades across the city this financial year.

Residents have welcomed Council’s efforts to improve accessibility and connectivity within the existing footpath network. Glenfield resident John Stevens said the new section of footpath completed in Nardoo Street by Council late last year is terrific and makes it much easier to get around. “The new footpath on Nardoo Street is like a freeway,” Mr Stevens said. “It makes it a lot easier to travel down Fernleigh Road in my wheelchair to head to the Rules Club for lunch.” More improvements will soon be seen across the city, following Council’s resolution at the January Council Meeting

on Monday night to accept a tender to deliver more than $400,000 of works to upgrade the footpath network. These new works will occur across Forest Hill, Tolland, Mount Austin and Kooringal over the coming months. Letters will be sent to residents who are impacted prior to works starting and will detail specific locations, works to be completed and project timeframes. The completed and planned works align with important documents within Council’s planning framework, including the Community Strategic Plan 2040 – Wagga View and Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017–21.

As per Council’s recently updated engineering guidelines, new footpaths will be 1.5 metres wide to allow sufficient space for pedestrians and/or permitted wheeled devices, such as mobility scooters or prams, to pass side-by-side. Where necessary pram ramps will also be installed. “For a long time, the community has been calling for a better connected footpath network across the city,” Councillor Dan Hayes said. “Residents will soon have access to more assigned walkways so kids can walk to school, residents can go to the local store, and people can visit their neighbours without having to walk on roads or navigate other terrain.”

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2018. Also I would like to thank everyone who attended all or one of the Australia Day events. A big special

thank you to all who helped, especially to the Australian Army Band Kapooka; Wagga Wagga is very lucky to have this wonderful band to entertain us. I would also like to say a big congratulations to all the award winners - you are all great! •••• The hot weather is well and truly with us and I must take

this opportunity to plead with everyone to be very careful if you go swimming in the river. Please don’t swim in the dark, always take someone with you and remember the water is usually very cold and moves very quickly. Think about going to the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre, I am sure you will enjoy a swim there. ••••

I am very, very disappointed with the amount of graffiti that is appearing throughout the city. I once again ask you if you see someone doing the wrong thing, that is putting graffiti anywhere, please phone Wagga Wagga police as soon as you can. Graffiti gives a wrong impression of our wonderful

city. Remember also that graffiti put on a road sign can be very dangerous and should be removed as soon as possible. I ask that if you see a sign with any graffiti on it, whether it is very small or large, please phone me on my mobile, 0402 214 556. If I do not answer, please leave a message so that I can arrange to have

it removed as soon as possible. I also have another request. If you are able and have some spare time, could you volunteer to help remove some graffiti? Just phone me. Thank you.

ASBESTOS POLICY ON EXHIBITION

At Monday night’s Council meeting, Council endorsed placing the draft Asbestos Policy on public exhibition. The policy has been modified so that it now aligns with Gregadoo Waste Management Centre’s (GWMC) Environmental Protection Licence (EPL). The proposed changes to the policy would allow GWMC to receive all asbestos materials, including bonded asbestos, friable asbestos and asbestos containing soils. Previously only bonded asbestos could be received. In addition, changes have been made to the policy so that asbestos from outside of the LGA can be received, which was previously not permitted. Under existing legislation, only licenced contractors will be able to transport friable asbestos to GWMC. No staff at GWMC will be handling asbestos. The draft Asbestos Policy will be on public exhibition for 28 days, from 30 January to 26 February, with submissions open until 12 March. To read the draft policy and learn how to make a submission visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/public. Following the public exhibition and submission period, Council will receive a further report addressing any submissions made in respect of the proposed policy. Adoption of the new policy will be proposed, unless there are any recommended amendments deemed to be substantial that would require a further public exhibition period.

BOUNCING BUNDLE OF JOY: The Botanic Gardens Zoo has a new addition to its herd of deer - a baby boy, who was born two days before Christmas. While he is shy, he gave the camera a smile.

FAW N O V E R T H E Z O O ’ S N E W E S T A D D I T I O N If you look closely enough you might just spot a smidge of red on the nose of the newest addition at the Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary. A special Christmas delivery in the form of a healthy baby boy deer

arrived at the zoo on December 23 – you could say he is Wagga’s very own Rudolph. The fawn has settled in well and delighted visitors to the zoo over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“The arrival of the baby deer provided some added festive joy at the zoo over the holidays,” Zoo curator Kira McBeath said. “While we were all secretly hoping for a Christmas Day baby, two

days shy is still pretty exciting. “His arrival was also perfectly timed for the influx of visitors the zoo receives throughout the school holiday period.” The baby deer doesn’t have an official name, so,

next time you visit the zoo, feel free to come up with your own name (Christmas themed names optional). The Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary is free entry and is open every day from 9am to 5pm.

Do you want to win cool prizes for your community group? Are you keen to help spread the word on waste? Wagga Wagga City Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from community or volunteer groups to participate in a training session on Tuesday 27 February at 5:30pm on the new kerbside waste service. A representative of the group will attend a workshop on the new service and gain the necessary information and tools to deliver this information back to their represented group. All groups that participate will go in the draw to win prizes including iPads, GoPros and cameras to assist with the running of their group. For further information and to receive an Expression of Interest form please email waste@wagga.nsw.gov.au or call Alice Kent on 1300 292 442.

This project was supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the waste levy.

Safety improvements for school students It was a safer return to school for some Wagga Wagga students this year. Footpath improvements and the installation of fencing in the centre island (pictured) were completed by Council in Coleman Street in time for the new school year. The upgraded section,

between Edmondson and Macleay streets, is near two high schools and the TAFE NSW Riverina Institute campus. The works improve safety by directing pedestrians to dedicated crossings at either end of the street. The works were carried out in the school holidays to avoid disruptions to pedestrians and motorists.

The works are part of the Road and Maritime Services Pedestrian Infrastructure Safety Around Schools Program. This is the third project to be completed in Wagga Wagga under the program with new safety measures also installed near Kooringal High School and Mater Dei Catholic College.

“The work the CSO participants completed helps improve the overall look of the cemetery. Being a cemetery, presentation of the site is very important,” Parks Operations Supervisor Henry Pavitt said. “Erosion is an ongoing issue at the Monumental Cemetery, but we are more than pleased with the work that CSO participants carried out there recently.” As well as improving the overall look of the city, the program also saves Council time and money by allowing Council staff to complete other works across the city.
