More than a hundred community members turned out to mark National Reconciliation Week on Wednesday and unveil a 8.5m by 6.5m public art installation. The artwork, called Together As One, carries the message of reconciliation and all people on the land walking together. Local Aboriginal artist Tyronne Hoerler (left) proudly showed off the artwork to Aunty Isobel Reid (middle) and Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM at STORY INSIDE the launch.
Overhaul for intersection
A new road surface is coming to the intersection of Bourke Street and Fernleigh Road. Machinery will remove the top 225mm of roadway at the intersection during night works, starting Monday 5 June. City of Wagga Wagga Operations Manager Stephen Jewell said the works will help prevent future damage and extend the life of the roadway at the high-traffic intersection. “The pavement at the
intersection is showing signs of failures, with extensive cracking and poor ride surface,” Mr Jewell said. “These night works are being carried out before widespread failures begin to manifest. “Deep asphalt pavement works is the best fit for this road due to the high daily volume of traffic use through the intersection. “While the works are expected to cost about $430,000, these kind of works will have a life of up to 40 years, providing value for money over a pavement rehabilitation and shallower asphalt layers, which will have
a life of only about 25 years.” The works are expected to take five nights to complete, weather permitting, with the road closed and detours in place for motorists from 7pm to 6am each shift. “Night works are the best for these asphalt renewal works to help minimise disruptions to road users. The colder night conditions will help reduce the temperature of the new asphalt, which is transported from the Bomen plant at a temperature of 170 degrees Celsius, so the road can be reopened in time for traffic the next morning,” Mr Jewell said. “We are also mindful of
residents who live in the immediate vicinity of the intersection and made sure they have been notified well before the works. “We thank all residents for their cooperation during the five nights these works are carried out.” This project follows on from other major road projects recently completed by the City of Wagga Wagga, including asphalt works on Tarcutta Street in March 2016 and Glenfield Road overpass in December 2016, and, a full road resealing schedule including sections of 17 roads completed during the 2016/17 summer months.
Bourke Street/Fernleigh Road night works what road users need to know • Road closed from 7pm to 6am. • Local access only permitted on approach roads to the intersection – Bourke Street, between Urana Street and Leavenworth Drive and Fernleigh Road, between Bourke and Glenfield Road. • Detours in place for all other road users. Detours via Urana Street, Glenfield Road, Leavenworth and Northcott Parade/Mitchelmore Street • Works are expected to take five nights to complete – Monday to Friday (weather permitting) • Intersection will be open to all traffic outside of work hours For work site and detour maps, and to keep updated on all road closures or changed traffic conditions visit, www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads
Public artwork brings message of reconciliation A new public artwork created by a local Aboriginal teenager has been launched to mark National Reconciliation Week in Wagga Wagga. Tyronne “Ronnie” Hoerler, 19, designed the temporary public art installation made up of 221 graphic vinyl tiles, which will feature in Civic Centre forecourt for the next six months. The 8.5m by 6.5m artwork Together As One was commissioned to coincide with National Reconciliation Week and the commemoration of 50 years
since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. Ronnie said his work speaks about reconciliation with all people on this land walking together. “The colours in the artwork were particularly chosen from the Australian landscape as they have the power to draw people in,” he said. “The footprints in the middle are Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal working together as one. “The three waterholes represent the three rivers, the stars lighting
up the night sky across the artwork represent the combined power of the people working together, while the black and white handprints represent helping one another in different places.” Ronnie was born in Wagga Wagga and is a descendant of the Ngemba and Wonkumarra tribes of Western NSW and Queensland. During the creation process, he met with Elders Aunty Lorraine Tye and Aunty Joyce Hampden to speak about his work and share his progress. Ronnie, who graduated from
Mount Austin High School last year, was successful in his application to the Public Art Advisory Panel to create a work especially for the forecourt of the Civic Centre for National Reconciliation Week among a field of highly talented local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. “This beautiful artwork reminds us all that together as one we can achieve so much,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of us all
as we move forward, creating a nation, and for us a community in Wagga Wagga, strengthened by respectful and deep relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and nonIndigenous peoples.” Together As One was officially launched on Wednesday 31 May, which also featured a performance by the Mount Austin High School Hip Hop Crew. National Reconciliation Week takes place from 27 May to 3 June. For more information, visit reconciliation.org.au/nrw/

The creators of Backyard Ashes will return to Wagga Wagga to make their next feature film The Merger. The City of Wagga Wagga is putting $20,000 towards the Crow Crow Productions film, which will showcase the city on the national stage. Community Sector Manager, Janice Summerhayes, says it’s a sound investment. “As well as the national exposure that Wagga Wagga will receive as a result of the promotion and screening of the film, it is estimated that the production will spend $1M in Wagga Wagga,” she said. “With up to 100 people set to travel to Wagga as a part of the production, this will be as significant boost for local accommodation, retail and hospitality sectors.” Director and writer Mark Grentell says the producers are thrilled to be going back to his home town for filming.
WHEEEE: Three, two, one … blast off! This colourful, rocketinspired play equipment is the newest addition to Lineal Park in Boorooma. The structure was moved into its new home on Thursday, followed by a monster, tube slide and swing set. The playground is ready for use by Wagga kids, and big kids, this weekend. The playground compliments a covered barbecue area, fitness stations and footpaths. Finishing touches will be carried out at Lineal Park over the coming weeks.
“The people of Wagga were unbelievably supportive of Backyard Ashes and that support allowed the film and the city of Wagga to be known right around the country and internationally too,” he said. “We’re excited to be partnering with the City of Wagga Wagga to bring an even bigger production to town this time when filming The Merger and have no doubt that it will have huge benefits to the city. “We very much look forward to sharing this journey with the people of Wagga Wagga and adding to the growing reputation of ‘Waggawood’.” Scheduled to premiere in mid2018, The Merger explore themes of tolerance, acceptance and cultural sharing. The film has also received production funding from Screen Australia, Create NSW and the Create NSW Regional Film Fund.
R E S ID E N T S T UNE IN T O L I V E S T R E A M About 500 community members watched the May Council Meeting from the comfort of their homes or while out and about on 22 May. The first meeting to be livestreamed as part of six-month trial attracted plenty of interest from the public, with residents able to watch the meeting live or replay it afterwards. “Livestreaming allows you to view the Council meeting on your phone, tablet or PC. If you can’t get to the meeting but
are interested in the decision-making process in general or a particular item on the agenda, you can view it anywhere or watch it on demand after the meeting,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. The next Council Meeting will be held on 26 June and the livestream can be viewed at wagga.nsw. gov.au/watchlive. The livestreaming trial also follows on

PAWSOME: Students from The Bidgee School and Principal Marianne Mitchell play with Humphrey the education and support dog at Conolly Park after City staff arranged for him to use the area to play and run.
City gives Humphrey the dog a helping paw Finding the right balance between work and play can be a struggle for most people … even some dogs. Humphrey the Labrador is an education support dog, and extra special member of The Bidgee School in Wagga Wagga. The school supports young people to recover from trauma and embrace a positive future. As a pup, Humphrey received special training through Assistance Dogs Australia, which allows him to offer different types of emotional support to the students. Humphrey works hard during the day, and just like any other dog, can’t wait for knock-off time to run and romp in an open space. However, for Humphrey to run free or fetch a ball, he needed his own open space. Principal
of The Bidgee School Marianne Mitchell turned to the City of Wagga Wagga to help with this special request. The City of Wagga Wagga has granted Marianne and Humphrey use of Conolly Park as a secure, open space for Humphrey to stretch his legs two to three times a week. “One of the conditions of Humphrey coming to the school was that he is not allowed to run with other dogs in nominated off-leash areas. If he is snapped at by another dog it could affect his temperament, which could then impact the job he is able to do at school,” Ms Mitchell said. If community members see Humphrey at Conolly Park, they are being asked to watch him play from a distance, especially if they have dogs with them. “The Bidgee School
approached the City of Wagga Wagga to assist with the use of Conolly Park for Humphrey’s needs, and we were only too happy to help out,” Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton said. “Humphrey is using the oval for an extra special reason, so if community members do see him out and about, please respect his privacy and watch from a distance.” Humphrey is highly trained, he will come when called and is even toilet trained and will only go on command. His use of the oval is a one-off special request. All other dog owners are reminded to use designated off-leash areas only. For a full list of dog off-leash areas visit, www.wagga.nsw. gov.au/animals

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
As a new Councillor, I take ownership of what legacies I have inherited, good and bad. Only eight months into my term, I recognise there’s still so much to do but collectively, we have achieved a significant
amount and the future is looking pretty bright. There’s a lot of projects on the go and our strategic plans such as the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy are setting up a framework for developing a number of positive initiatives. It’s a competitive world out there for us all and it’s no different for the City of Wagga Wagga. We’re
constantly competing with other cities and regions across Australia. We compete for funding from state and federal government as well as with other cities and regions in attracting new residents, business and industry. At last week’s Council meeting I put forward a proposal with an aim to lobby the state government to improve passenger rail

connections for Wagga. In particular, looking at improving services between Wagga and Albury. Better commuter links between the two cities lifts our ability to compete across the board. Simply put, better connections means more job opportunities, increased access to specialist medical services, increased education opportunities and more flexible and affordable housing options
by being able to live in one community and work in another. We often look to capital city connections as the pot of gold when the benefits are far from equal and only one-way. Intra-regional connections such as regular commuter rail services between Wagga and Albury provide mutual benefits, stimulating regionwide growth that can pull
us up to a whole new level of competition with other regions across the state and country. As a regional capital, we can’t afford to only look inward or to just Sydney. We need to look to our neighbours and see how we can work best together.
Councillor Vanessa Keenan
PA R T N E R P R O G R A M L AU N C H E D More than 40 local businesses and organisations attended the launch of the 2017-18 Wagga Tourism Partner Program on 31 May. The event also doubled as a networking night with accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants, bars, local producers, tour operators, event venue providers and event organisers taking the opportunity to catch up with likeminded businesses. Twenty-eight businesses have already signed up for the 2017-18 program, about half of which are new partners. “The first year of the Wagga Tourism Partner Program has been a great success, with 70 partners joining the program, the new Visit Wagga website launched and a new-look Visitor Guide to showcase our region created,” Team Leader Visitor Economy Fiona Hamilton said.
