NEW AND IMPROVED: Mayor Greg Conkey and Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire announce $1.5M in NSW Government funding to improve community facilities with representatives from South Wagga Tennis Club, NSW Tennis, The Leisure Company, Wagga Rugby League.

$1.5M boost for Wagga New and improved community facilities will roll out across the city as part of a $1.5M funding injection from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities fund. On Wednesday, the NSW Government presented a cheque of $1,514,672 to Council to deliver the following important projects:

• Female change room facilities at Robertson Oval and McDonald’s Park $664,672 • Three adult laydown change facilities (specialised toilet and change room) in the CBD - $250,000 • Seven playground and park upgrades (Cox Park, Flinders Street Park, Graceland Detention Basin, Mangoplah Sports Ground, Paddy Osborne Park, Undurra Drive Park and Uranquinty Neighbourhood Park) - $250,000 • South Wagga Tennis Club new synthetic and hot shots courts - $350,000

“We look forward to delivering these projects that have been funded by the NSW Government,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Greg Conkey OAM said. “This funding will help to create a more liveable and thriving community in Wagga Wagga.” Construction of the projects is set to begin in the second half of 2018. “Council will work closely with local sporting groups to ensure the new infrastructure is delivered in a timely and appropriate manner,” Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said.

Daryl Maguire MP Member for Wagga Wagga said the NSW Government’s significant investment in Wagga Wagga will provide residents with improved facilities the whole region can enjoy. “Our community has been calling out for more female change rooms and adult laydown change facilities and I’m thrilled these can now be carried out,” Mr Maguire said. “Stronger Country Communities funding is an investment in local infrastructure to improve the lives of residents and enhance the attractiveness of our region – this funding will help us do exactly that.”

weekly MOWING

R E P O R T

All parks, reserves and open space areas are programmed to receive one grass cut approximately once every six weeks as part of Council’s seasonal mowing program. This will be final

period for the seasonal mowing program, with staff changing over to sportsground preparations for winter competitions. The mowing teams will be operating in

the following suburbs this week: • North: CBD followed by Estella • East: Lake Albert followed by Tatton • West: Bourkelands followed by Mount Austin and Tolland

The new waste service starts 2 April. Bins will be delivered to households until 23 March. Parts of the following areas should anticipate bin delivery in the next week:

• Lake Albert • Tolland

• Mt. Austin • Nth. Wagga

• Kooringal

SAY G’DAY: Twenty-four people from India, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, England, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Kuwait became the newest citizens of Australia and Wagga Wagga at the monthly citizenship ceremony held at the Civic Centre on Wednesday 28 February.

Council to begin direct negotiations for FOGO Wagga Wagga City Council will begin direct negotiations with potential food organics and garden organics (FOGO) processors ahead of the new kerbside waste service starting on 2 April. Tenders for the acceptance and processing of FOGO material were open from 13 January to 12 February, however, the two tenders submitted did not offer acceptable terms for the service and were unable to start from 2 April. At the February Ordinary Council Meeting, the elected Council resolved to enter into negotiations with both the unsuccessful tenderers and third parties. “We put a number of options forward in the tender so we could test the market and ensure we get the best value for the ratepayers’ dollar,” Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “We had significant interest, with six businesses attending an information session and 21 prospective tenders accessing the documents. “Unfortunately the terms of the two submitted tenders weren’t acceptable, so we will begin the direct negation process as soon as possible.”

TRANSITION TO NEW KERBSIDE WASTE SERVICE

Key dates • Bin delivery: 12 February to 23 March • Removal of old bins: Late March through to 20 April • New service begins: 2 April No impact for roll out of new kerbside waste service While the FOGO processor is still to be determined, there will be no change to the roll out of the new kerbside waste service and how residents will sort their rubbish. JJ Richards and Sons Pty Ltd will be emptying all three bins from 2 April, with general waste to be disposed of in landfill and recycling to be processed by Kurrajong Recyclers. “Our intention is to have a FOGO processor finalised as soon as possible and as a last resort, FOGO material may temporarily be disposed of in landfill as a short-term option,” Ms Angel said. “Even if a FOGO processor isn’t finalised by 2 April it’s important the community sort their waste correctly as the contamination rate will be closely monitored

when the processor is in place. “Kerbside waste contracts generally run from seven to 10 years, so it is important we continue to improve our waste habits as soon as possible. Wagga Wagga is growing rapidly and based on our current waste levels, the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre will be full in 80 years and requires Council to budget about $1M each year to create new waste cells for the future.”

Local music will stream down Fitzmaurice Street on Saturday 10 March as part of Fitz Live, in a new celebration of Wagga Wagga’s great musical talents. Fitz Live will showcase the diversity of the city’s incredible local acts across the music scene, from jazz to rap, blues to pop and even a splash of indie rock, at various venues along Fitzmaurice Street. Artists will pop up in venues at set times between 11am and 7pm on the day. Wagga Wagga City Council Cultural Officer Tracie Miller said this event is a great opportunity to discover new and original local music. “Wagga Wagga is home to many fabulous artists and we hope

people can enjoy a range of local, live music while they’re out shopping or enjoying a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon,” Ms Miller said. “The acts are staged to occur throughout the afternoon, so there will be plenty of opportunities for people to wander down Fitzmaurice Street, follow a trail of great music and catch a few shows.” Crowds will be treated to more than 20 acts, who will perform at Cave BBQ, Kidsons Cycles, Thirsty Crow, Knights Meats and Deli, Romano’s Hotel, Thaigga, Cafe Sonder, Mantra Pavilion, Giuseppe’s Restaurant & Bar, Uneke Lounge and Eastern Riverina Arts. Romano’s Hotel Licensee Belinda King said Fitz Live will be

a great event for the precinct. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the Fitzmaurice Street end of the city activated with some amazing musicians during Fitz Live,” Ms King said. “This event is a great way for local businesses to collaborate and showcase the diverse musical talent that is on offer in Wagga.” All business venues for Fitz Live are members of the Wagga Tourism Partner Program, an initiative coordinated by Wagga Wagga City Council’s Visitor Economy and Events team to build tourism and boost visitation to our city. BECK WITH STREET BRIDGE WORKS The Beckwith Street Bridge will be closed on Tuesday 6 March to remove a redundant sewer main pipe and water pipes. The street will be closed from The Esplanade to Cooedong Lane with detours in place. These additional works are a joint effort between Wagga Wagga City Council and Riverina Water to assist with the continuous beautification of the area. The bridge has been given

some well-earned tender loving care recently after serving the community for 90 years. In January, Council staff made repairs to the footpath and concrete bridge railings before giving it a clean and fresh coat of paint in heritage colours. The current Beckwith Street Bridge was built in 1927 by Charles Hardy and Sons and replaced what was probably a wooden footbridge.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au | 0467 552 263

Just over 12 months ago I became the chair of The Leisure Company (TLC). Since that time I have had the immense pleasure of working with a great group of people both on the board of TLC and the staff. It has also given me great pleasure to meet many of the TLC’s participants. One of the great inhibitors to people living life with disabilities is that much of the infrastructure built in our communities was planned and constructed in a time when, as a community, we gave scant regard to the requirements of people with disabilities. As many of you know, TLC provides support to people with disabilities to access the community in

all aspects of their daily lives - enhancing not only the personal outcomes for those participants, but also maximising their ability to be productive members of our communities. Last year TLC bought an additional building in Peter Street that will help us improve our services. This building is immediately next to a Council car park and to the rear of the Sister City walkway. In planning our renovations it became clear that TLC needed to include an adult laydown change facility for our participants’ needs. The board and staff also realised that such a facility was needed by the wider community and people visiting our city. I am extremely proud the decision was made to make such a facility, when complete, available

24/7 to anyone with such a need. I am also extremely proud of my fellow Councillors and Council staff who had no hesitation in agreeing to this vision. Wednesday saw the announcement of the first round of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund that granted TLC $50,000 towards our facility in addition to another $200,000 for Council to provide two other matching facilities in the CBD. Combined with other disability initiatives in Wagga, we will soon be able to claim that our city is the most accessible aware city in this state. I would like to acknowledge the NSW Government and Daryl Maguire in particular for the wisdom of this Stronger Country Communities Fund.

The total amount granted to Wagga was more than $1.5M to improve women’s change facilities at our two premier sporting grounds, improve seven playgrounds and improve tennis facilities at South Wagga Tennis Club in addition to the laydown facilities. One last thought. If the NSW government diverted the funds from just one of its stadium rebuild proposals in Sydney then 50 regional and rural cites could be provided $20M each to provide improved facilities at their major sports facilities. Imagine the opportunities that would provide to those 50 cities and our rural areas generally.
