lighting, new cricket nets, a basketball hoop, new canteen, new amenities block, a wet weather shelter, shelters with picnic tables and barbecue, and upgraded parking areas. Wagga Rugby League (WRL) has entered into an agreement with Council to project manage the first stage with a budget of $217,048. “WRL requested to manage the overall project in partnership with Council in order to obtain best value and to ensure the maximum amount of volunteer contributions

can be realised,” Mr Creighton said. “WRL are confident, as project manager, they will add significant value by completing additional items from the master plan that are not currently in the scope for this stage. “Council has previously entered into similar agreements with WRL and those projects have delivered excellent value with the Council funding and produced highly utilised venues post development.” WRL chairman Warren Barclay

said the start of works on Stage 1 was a significant step forward. “Wagga Rugby League and Council have a strong working relationship and we are pleased to undertake Stage 1 of the redevelopment of Harris Park,” Mr Barclay said. “Overall the WRL team effort has been fantastic and we look forward to improving the Harris Park ground and facilities for the community as a whole in the coming years.”

Next stage of levee works set to start this year

The second stage of one of the city’s most important infrastructure projects, the Main City Levee Upgrade, is expected to get underway this year after Council agreed to enter into a contract with the preferred tenderer. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said discussions will start with the

preferred tenderer, Murray Constructions, and contracts should be exchanged in November. “The $9.6M Stage 2 works account for a significant portion of the entire $23.2M levee upgrade which is being funded by all levels of government, and will offer a greater level of assurance to Wagga Wagga residents and businesses,” Cr Conkey said.

“The levee upgrade has been a long and detailed project due to its complexity and importance and I’m pleased to see it progressing to the second stage, noting that Stage 1 is due for completion in December.” Construction methods to be used to raise the levee height in Stage 2 will comprise predominately of capped sheet piles that

will protrude from the earth levee running the length of the Cadell Place wall (parallel to Fitzmaurice Street) to Johnson Street, then from Riverina Playhouse to Hammond Avenue. The community is encouraged to take a look at a 30m section of sheet piling, installed as a demonstration site, located adjacent to Pump Station

15A on Tarcutta St (opposite Watermark Apartments). In addition to the sheet piling, raising and extending the existing concrete retaining walls along Cadell Place and behind Watermark Apartments, will also be part of this stage. The works, which are expected to begin in December, will be higher in visibility in comparison to

Stage 1 due to the proximity of construction sites to the CBD and residential areas located along the Murrumbidgee River. A community meeting to explain the Stage 2 project and the potential impacts to residents and businesses during construction will be held in late November. More information: wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee

One of the city’s more unique sports has been given a helping hand, with Council presenting the Wagga Wagga Polocrosse Club with a ride-on lawn mower. The club operates at its grounds in Euberta on Old Narrandera Road, with about 30 local members playing the combination of polo and lacrosse during the sport’s peak season in winter. “We wanted the mower to

keep the grounds looking presentable, reduce fire hazards and have everything looking in top condition,” club secretary Katie Peeck said. “The mower is exactly what we wanted. This is a family club and we all try to do as much as we can to maintain the grounds and to run as many events as possible.” In exchange for the mower, worth about $7000, the club will also use it to maintain

some of the other areas in Euberta on behalf of Council. “This is another example of Council working collaboratively with our community to get a great result for everyone,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “The club takes great pride in the polocrosse grounds and it’s fantastic to be able to help them grow their sport in Wagga Wagga.”

LONG TERM FOGO PROCESSOR APPOINTED Worm Tech Pty Ltd will continue to process Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) material on a two-year contract with three one-year options. Wagga Wagga City Council’s new kerbside waste service was rolled out in April, with waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, egg shells and dairy products able to be disposed of in the greenlid bin, along with garden waste. Worm Tech Pty Ltd has been processing FOGO material into high quality compost at its Carrathool site on a shortterm contract while Council negotiated a long-term arrangement with a number of interested businesses.

“This is a great outcome for the community as it allowed us to ensure we get the best value for the ratepayers’ dollar,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “The data we’ve received from Worm Tech since April has shown the community has gotten behind the new kerbside waste service. “In the first six months, 4567 tonnes of FOGO material has been composted instead of going to landfill. “Our aim by April 2019 is 10,000 tonnes and I encourage everyone in the community to keep up the good work and help fight the war on waste.” Along with helping the

environment, reducing waste to landfill has financial benefits. A waste cell costs about $4M and Wagga Wagga was producing enough waste to build a new cell every four to five years. With a long-term FOGO processor locked in, even more types of waste can be disposed of in your green-lid bin. In addition to your food and garden waste, Worm Tech Pty Ltd accepts such items as wooden skewers or popsicle sticks, cardboard takeaway containers and pizza boxes, paper towel and napkins, tissues and newspaper. A full list of what can go in your green-lid bin will be updated on yourwaste.com.au as soon as possible.

At Wagga. an organisational level, The project involves the culture at Council three key elements; i) isn’t much different whole of organisation change within Council to other Councils, it’s often reflective of resulting in Council traditional male and taking the lead in female roles with the gender equity for staff and elected members; idea of women in leadership positions ii) engagement with still a new thing. In various sectors within Wagga we have the community to several groups and advocate for gender

clubs only allowing male members and workplaces where we see boards and management dominated by men. Our ‘old fashioned values’ all contribute to an unconscious bias restricting opportunities for women on a daily basis. As a young(ish) female Councillor I experience this bias in the majority of my interactions in the role and did so when an employee here too. For a long time I thought that’s just the way it is. My privilege in being elected Councillor though has made me realise I need to not accept it but be a voice for change to build a community that fosters respect for and

empowers women with the hope that abuse towards women in any form is not tolerated. This project is the platform for that change and like all our city’s leaders, I need to champion for a community that is inclusive. Change doesn’t happen without action. I’m looking forward to a day where we no longer accept gender inequality and Wagga has the conversation that recognises women as equal. This respect is a shift from the platitudes so easily said and is the catalyst for change in a culture where women aren’t physically and sexually abused at increasing rates.

ULTRASOUND TRIAL FOR LAKE ALBERT TO HELP REDUCE ALGAE

The attack on bluegreen algae in Wagga Wagga’s Lake Albert is set to start next month when ultrasound technology is trialled in a bid to control blooms at the popular recreational area. Wagga Wagga City Council voted at its 29 October meeting to proceed with a 12-month trial period of the Envirosonic Ultrasound system which has the potential to control cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) to safe levels. A second report will go to Council after the trial with recommendations on whether or not to purchase the installed system based on its results. The trial, which will cost $125,000, is expected to start in midDecember. ALS Water Canberra

will conduct weekly water quality sampling of Lake Albert. The performance of the ultrasound technology will be gauged against weekly lab results and the green, amber and red algae alert levels. The trial will be deemed successful if the cyanobacteria levels are within 50,000 cells/ mL (amber level) during peak summer months and 5000 cells/mL (green level) during all other months. The Envirosonic units are solar powered and will be installed on pontoons anchored to the bottom of the lake. Council is working with lake user groups to ensure education and safety surrounding the units and their placement. Part of that process may involve placing buoys

in the lake as soon as possible to get community feedback and boat owners and drivers familiar with the concept. Council’s Manager Project Delivery Rupesh Shah said ultrasound technology was an efficient and costeffective way to start to manage algal blooms and results could be

expected within 4-6 weeks of the units’ installation. “It’s eco-friendly and very cost-effective. It’s a one-off installation cost and then it’s just meeting maintenance costs and changing batteries every five years,” Mr Shah said. Mr Shah said a key objective was to keep the lake open all year.

That’s the key message community members are being urged to remember as they venture to the Murrumbidgee River as the weather heats up. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said increased awareness of the river’s dangers and how to safely navigate it was important at this time of year. “The river is one of the city’s greatest assets,” Cr Conkey said. “We want people to use and enjoy the area but it’s so important the river is shown
