Get out + about for holiday fun We may be at the halfway point of the Spring school holidays, but there are still plenty of activities and events happening across Wagga Wagga to keep residents of all ages entertained.

Visit Wagga’s Spring Jam 2.0 Hike + Seek adventure kicked off on Monday 28 September with five new challenges and locations in the city to explore each day. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the Hike + Seek offering these holidays has been designed following the cancellation of the family friendly Spring Jam festival due to the COVID-19 restrictions

on public gatherings. “It takes you to some of the city’s beautiful parks and open spaces, like the Botanic Gardens, the Victory Memorial Gardens and Visitor Information Centre, and the new Gobbagombalin Jump Track,” Ms Hamilton said. “It’s a lot of fun. You set out on foot and gather clues, earn points and for one special challenge you can even collect a tasty reward for your efforts.” Head to visitwagga.com/hikeandseek to find out more and download the Hike + Seek app. The Wagga Zoo & Aviary will be open daily from 9am-4pm for the remainder of the school holidays, so why not drop in to see new arrival, Marquis the miniature donkey, and all the usual suspects of the fourlegged, furry or feathered kind. The zoo now has a QR code entry system at the gates, so you will need to bring along

a mobile phone to sign in. From animals to insects, and Wagga City Library’s School Holiday Program is ‘Bee Gardens’. Visit the library to pick up a free ‘Make at Home: Bee Garden’ kit, borrow one the Library’s bee-themed books or learn more about waggle dances, buzz pollination and bee hotels, through a series of short videos. The links can be found on the ‘all-aboutbees’ page on the Wagga City Library website. Intensive swimming lessons will be running at the Oasis Aquatic Centre from Tuesday to Friday, 6-9 October. Bookings are essential, so please phone 6926 9390. The Museum of the Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers site currently has two exhibitions, old:New and Care Factor: stories from the home and hospice, while at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, it is your last chance to see Dead Reckoning,

Soundscapes and Rembrandt to Picasso: Five Centuries of European prints, which all finish on Sunday 11 October. Both the Museum and Art Gallery will open their usual hours, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-4pm, and Sunday 10am-2pm. Our Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street will also be operating its normal hours - Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am4pm, and Sunday 9am-2pm. For the first time, it is hosting a Driver Reviver stop over the long weekend, offering coffee, tea and biscuits to travellers. “If you have family or friends who’ll be passing through Wagga this long weekend, tell them to stop in and have a break at the Visitor Centre,” Ms Hamilton said. “They can enjoy a free tea, coffee and snacks while meeting our knowledgeable Visitor Information Centre staff and learning more about our city’s attractions and experiences.”

Entwine project taking shape at Gardens Work on the $930,000 Entwine project to redevelop two popular areas at the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens is nearing completion. Entwine aims to revitalise the iconic city gardens and deliver new community infrastructure and facilities that will be inclusive and accessible for residents and visitors to enjoy. The finishing touches to the Brolga Pond are underway with concreting and irrigation now complete. Turf is being laid and vegetation planted this week. Finishing works will continue over the next two weeks with completion on the redeveloped Brolga Pond area expected in early October.

Project Co-ordinator Tom Lemerle said further works to the adventure play space in the Australian Native Garden were about to get underway. “This work includes the final touches to BBQ shelters and mulching of the entire area,” he said. “This needs to occur before the space can be opened to the public. It’s all coming along on time and on budget.” The overall project is expected to be finished by the end of October 2020, weather permitting. Entwine is funded through a $739,466 grant from the NSW Regional Growth – Environment & Tourism Fund with the balance contributed by Wagga Wagga City Council.

C O U N C I L S T I M U L U S PAC K AG E F O R LOC AL CONS TRUC TION INDUS TRY Wagga Wagga City Council has developed a relief package to help support the construction industry – one of the city’s biggest employers. The package aims to protect the industry while still delivering Council’s projects funded by infrastructure contributions. Council’s Director Regional Activation Michael Keys said the move was an important step in supporting the local economy. “People may not realise that the construction industry is the third largest employer in the city, employing 10 per cent of our workforce,” Mr Keys said. “Many of those employed are very skilled and mobile – if we don’t support them, those people and their families may leave to seek employment elsewhere. “Helping our local construction industry stay active is vital to the local economy.” Council’s support package covers three main areas. • Deferring contributions for 12 months – fast tracked Developers constructing subdivisions over 5 lots and other development with a cost of over $2M will have the option to apply for a deferral of contribution payments for 12 months after the date of any construction certificate up until 1 July 2021. Any deferral contribution will need to be secured by an unconditional bank guarantee. This part of the relief package applies to all infrastructure contribution types. “This will protect the industry from going into a slump,” Mr Keys said. • Waive sewer infrastructure contributions for CBD building change of use Any change of use to a building in the CBD will not be charged Section 64 Sewer

infrastructure contributions from the date this Addendum is adopted by Council. This will apply until Council updates the Wagga Wagga City Council Development Servicing Plan (DSP) Sewerage Services. This relief will apply to buildings in the CBD. “Someone may own an office block and want to install a hairdressing salon, retail store or café,” Mr Keys said. “Normally there is a charge applied to cover additional demand on our sewer network. For the time being that won’t apply. This is a huge support for development in the CBD and will really support small businesses wanting to get started.” • Sewer and stormwater contributions due when buildings constructed Council is changing the timing of payments for sewer and stormwater contributions. Previously this was applied at the subdivision stage without

the detailed plans of future development. Changing this timing to when construction is about to occur for these particular categories of development will provide more accurate assessment of potential impact and also mitigation measures that can be introduced to reduce demand on infrastructure and also reduce required contributions. This will apply until Council updates the Wagga Wagga City Council DSP Sewerage Services and the Wagga Wagga City Council DSP Stormwater. If one DSP is updated first the scheme will apply to the other Section 64 contribution. “By providing this relief package, we’re showing our commitment to the local construction industry, our city’s economic future, and being an innovative, leading regional Council,” Mr Keys said. Poignant stories of Riverina carers in new exhibition The challenging yet beautiful stories of Riverina residents caring for someone with a life-limiting illness are being given a voice through the new exhibition, Care Factor: stories from hospice and home, at the Museum of the Riverina. Museum Manager Luke Grealy said two years ago, the Museum ran a public program related to palliative care. “It drew a lot of interest in the community and at the end of that program, they asked the Museum to keep working in this area,” Mr Grealy said.

“We have been working with university lecturer and digital storyteller Pippa Wischer, who spent two years interviewing professional and family carers across the Riverina about their experiences. “I think death is one of those subjects that’s still a bit taboo; it’s inevitable, but people struggle to think about it and talk about it and plan for it. I hope this exhibition helps people find a way to deal with this inevitability.” The exhibition includes portraits and a 30-minute soundscape, created

from the interviews and sounds of the Riverina Ms Wischer recorded while on her travels. Ms Wischer said she was pleased to have been able to

bring these local stories into the public space through the exhibition and accompanying book. “We hear stories from the capital cities, but rarely from

regional communities like Wagga Wagga or the Riverina,” Ms Wischer said. “These stories demystify some of the processes of death and highlight

the humanity of the carers who were bold enough and honest enough to share what it’s really like. “There are things in this exhibition and book that are going to be sad, but there are literally some laugh out loud stories in there as well and there’s lots of really poignant stories of love, care and friendship. “It reminds us of how we can better support carers in our lives, and if we have a better understanding of what they’re going through, we have a better idea of how we can help them and that benefits the whole community."

In conjunction with the exhibition, a live stream panel discussion, ‘Myth Busting: When Someone Dies At Home’, will be held from 6pm-7pm on Wednesday 7 October 2020. Details of the event can be found on the Museum of the Riverina’s Facebook page. Care Factor: stories from hospice and home will be on exhibition until Sunday 22 November 2020 at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site, Corner of Morrow and Baylis Streets, Wagga Wagga.

HAVE YOUR SAY! HELP US NAME T WO WAGGA PARKS

Wagga Wagga City Council is reminding residents to put forward their suggestions for the names of two parks in the city’s north, with submissions closing on Wednesday 7 October 2020. The parks are located at Cootamundra Boulevard Park in Gobbagombalin and Sturrock Drive Park in Boorooma. Submissions opened in early September and Parks & Recreation Officer Glenda Pym said Council has been thrilled with the community’s response. “We’ve received many and varied suggestions from the community already and are keen to get more,” Ms Pym said. “We’ve had submissions which highlight the city’s multicultural connection, while our Wiradjuri connection has also featured quite strongly, particularly in association with the Wiradjuri story of Gobbagombalin and Pomingalarna. “We’ve also some ideas from people who’ve had a bit of fun, with suggestions like Parky McParkface, which obviously doesn’t comply with the Council’s Parks

Naming Policy. “If you’re interested in having your say, we encourage you to read through the Policy first to give you the best chance of suggesting an eligible name.” Cootamundra Boulevard Park and Sturrock Drive Park are among 42 parks, playgrounds and open spaces across the LGA without official names. Council is working its way through the list, as the budget allows. “There are a few more playgrounds out in the Estella, Boorooma, Gobbagombalin area that will come on-line eventually and will need to be renamed,” Ms Pym said. “We chose these two this time around as this part of Wagga is such a strong growth area and we wanted to get things sorted right from the beginning. “It’s a great opportunity for residents to take that real community ownership of a space that’s important to them.” Submission close on 7 October. You can a make suggestion at the Name Your Park page on the Connect Wagga website.

EUN O N Y B R I D G E A N D LEVEE OPENED Wagga Wagga’s new Main City Levee Bank and Eunony Bridge officially opened recently marking a significant upgrade to two of the city’s most important pieces of infrastructure. Works on the $23M levee project were completed in early March 2020 with the levee now capable of protecting the city against a 1 in 100 year flood event. The $10.6M strengthening and widening of Eunony Bridge was completed and opened to traffic on 2 September after a sixmonth project to raise the bridge standards to carry 160 tonne trucks. The official openings on Monday 21 September were performed by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, Federal Member for Riverina, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack and Wagga Wagga MLC Wes Fang. Both projects were the result of all levels of government combining to fund the infrastructure. The levee was funded by Federal Government ($10M)

Council received $9.8M Federal and State government funding for the Eunony upgrade through the Federal Bridges Renewal program ($4.9M) and State’s Fixing Country Roads program ($4.9M). Cr Conkey said the levee project, one of the largest

undertaken by Council in recent times, was finished four weeks ahead of schedule and more than $200K under budget. “The significance of such an important piece of infrastructure to the city cannot be understated,” Cr Conkey said. “The level of flood protection it now provides safeguards the CBD against a rare major flooding event. “The next stage is to provide adequate protection for the North Wagga Wagga community.”

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

These are very exciting times in the Wagga Local Government Area (LGA) but also in the greater Riverina area. To me that is an understatement to say the least and what has been happening in the area and what is on the horizon is unprecedented, unequalled, unparalleled or whichever adjective

you wish to use. This comment is not just in relation to the economic and business growth and opportunities present now or in the near future. Across the LGA and the city, growth and maturity in economic, cultural, social and community areas is evident. Critical to managing these changes into the future is to ensure that the essence of what makes this area an amazing place to live and work is maintained whilst growing and

thriving as a city and a region. The major factor in ensuring this is the people themselves. People across the spectrum of the growth in the city whether they be in retail business, construction, volunteering, social services or any one of the myriad of areas that make up our community. The passion that people show for their community and the love of it can be represented in both

the best and worst of times. Recently during the bushfires and COVID the community have demonstrated a love and passion not only for their own community but for those around us in their hour of need. Navigating through these unprecedented events the community has demonstrated an extraordinary level of resilience and care for all in the community. This facet of our community has never been lost regardless

of the growth in this region over the years. Moving forward as things continue to change all members of the community can be active participants and contribute to this growth and ensuring the essence of our community continues in many practical ways. Whether that be to continue to support local businesses, become more involved in the volunteer space, be aware of and contribute to assisting with those in need in the community,

continue to have open and frank conversations with those in our community or other regional communities and embrace and support change and growth in the area. The core objective for me in the future is that the full breadth of our community spectrum is carried forward and that no-one is left behind. I would also like to acknowledge the honour and excitement upon my re-election as Deputy Mayor on Monday

night. I am personally committed whether through Council or other community involvement in contributing to the growth and vibrancy of our city and region. Finally, wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend. I know I will be making the most of the restorative time with my family.

City’s leaders re-elected for new 12-month term

Wagga Wagga’s civic leaders were re-elected to their positions for another year at this week’s Mayoral elections. Cr Greg Conkey was reelected Mayor and will hold office until the next Mayoral election in September 2021, following the next ordinary local government elections which were postponed to next year due to the pandemic. Cr Dallas Tout was re-elected Deputy Mayor. Cr Conkey said after his re-election on Monday night that Council had faced some challenging times in the past four years, but none greater than the past six months
