second stage which was funded through the NSW Government’s Fixing Rail Program and would enable freight trains to safely load and unload. “The installation of this 4.9 kilometre section of track marks a significant milestone in the RiFL Hub program. Once complete, the precinct is set to become a thriving centre for freight servicing southern NSW and the rest of the state,” Mr Toole said. “This precinct, the Inland Rail and the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct Deputy Premier and will work hand-in-hand Minister for Regional to fast-track access and Transport and Roads connectivity to national and Paul Toole said the newly international markets for completed master rail siding regional businesses and was part of the $14.4 million products.”
Work is continuing on the third stage, including completing the $29.2 million 60-hectare Bomen Industrial Precinct and terminal services, funded by the NSW, Government’s Growing Regional Economies program and Wagga Wagga City Council. Council's General Manager Peter Thompson said the Riverina and Murray were important regions for the state’s economy, accounting for more than 12 per cent of agricultural production in NSW. “Developing the RiFL Hub will generate up to 6,000 jobs in this region, and has the potential to drive the economic future of the city for decades,” Mr Thompson
said. “Wagga Wagga is the largest inland city in NSW supporting a diverse range of industries including dairy, food and meat processing. “The intermodal hub will be located centrally between Melbourne and Sydney, with Visy Logistics starting operations at the RiFL Hub terminal during 2022. “The new rail freight connections will improve the import and export of local produce to the rest of the country and the world.” The completion of stage two complements heavy vehicle road access improvements completed in 2017, as well as the $10
million Eunony Bridge replacement project completed in September 2020. These projects were
funded under the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Roads program and Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal program.

New Australian citizens welcomed at ceremony The Wagga Wagga community welcomed 41 new Australian citizens to the city this week with the first in-person Citizenship Ceremony taking place in more than three months. There were 36 people who took the
pledge to become an Australian citizen along with five children who received their Australian Citizenship at a ceremony at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday (1 December). Countries of origin included Canada, Egypt, India, Iraq, Myanmar,
Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tibet, United Kingdom and Vietnam. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM, officiating over his last ceremony, said it was a great pleasure to have the
in-person ceremonies return as a major part of the city’s recovery from the pandemic. “We continued to conduct ceremonies online over the past two months which was fantastic for those involved to receive their citizenship, but this is a very special occasion made even better by the presence
of new citizens enjoying the moment with their family and friends,” Cr Conkey said. “This is one of the most rewarding events the city conducts and it has been an absolute pleasure to have welcomed so many new citizens to our city over the years.” There have been
a total of 304 new citizens, including 63 children, welcomed to the city this year at 21 ceremonies.
Citizenship ceremonies in 2021: • Five in-person ceremonies were held in January (Australia Day), March, April, May and June with 125 new citizens, including 31
children.
• Fifteen online ceremonies were held from 7 October to 10 November with 138 new citizens, including 27 children.
• The last Citizenship Ceremony for 2021 was an in-person ceremony held on 1 December with 41 new citizens, including five children.
STAY SA FE A ROUND WATER THIS SUMMER
pet
OF THE
WEEK
The first days of summer have delivered their promise of warmer weather and prompted a timely reminder from Wagga Wagga City Council and Royal Life Saving NSW (RLSNSW) to stay safe around water. Heavy and constant rainfall in recent weeks has seen inflows impact the region with popular destinations such as Wagga Wagga Beach, Wiradjuri Reserve and Oura Reserve experiencing minor flooding. Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said it was important to remind the community to be vigilant at this time and to listen to the advice of water safety experts. “The message from Royal Life Saving NSW is quite clear and we ask people to not swim in the river or use it for recreational purposes at this time while the threat of more flooding persists,” Mr Creighton said.
“We have often promoted our Respect the River campaign and it is again timely to remind the community that the river can be a dangerous environment for recreational activity. “There are always many hidden dangers in a river as well as cold and fast flowing water, so those risks have increased enormously in recent weeks as we experience swollen waterways. “It is an ever-changing environment and greater awareness is crucial. This is also relevant when around any water location – at the pool, the beach, dams, creeks and lakes. “The hot weather always makes the river a great place to enjoy and relax, but we urge the community to be prepared, to look out for each other, listen to any advice and warnings, and stay safe.” RLSNSW Riverina Manager
Michael Dasey endorsed the Respect the River message and reinforced the importance of keeping clear of flood water. “If it’s flooded, forget it … that’s a pretty clear and simple message and we urge the community to listen to this advice,” Mr Dasey said. “Taking care and taking preventative measures to avoid an incident when swimming, boating or fishing is one of the best approaches to staying safe around the water this summer … and always keep watch on children. “Learning CPR and doing a first aid course might also be a consideration – these skills could one day help you save a life.” More information can be found at drowningprevention.org. au and wagga.nsw.gov.au/ riversafety

Road repair crews busy after recent heavy rains Wagga Wagga City Council is asking motorists to take extra care on our roads as patching crews work to fill the potholes resulting from recent heavy rains. The city experienced another significant rain event at the end of last week which saw more than 100 millimetres fall over two days (25-26 November). Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said this event and the wetter than usual winter and spring have had a significant impact on the integrity of the sealed road network. “We acknowledge that the potholes are out there in big numbers, and in
response we have had the machinery out there since last Saturday, working on a seven-day basis to patch up the damage,” Mr Faulkner said. "Our initial focus has been on the main sub arterial roads which are generally the most affected as they are carrying high volumes of traffic, in particular heavy vehicles. "This has included Lake Albert and Kooringal roads, Dobney Avenue, Pearson Street, Boorooma Street, Pine Gully Road and Old Narrandera Road, Copland Street, Vincent Road, Mitchell Road, Inglewood and Gregadoo roads, Red Hill Road, and Bourke Street.
POTHOLE PATROL: Wagga Wagga City Council’s civil works machinery and crews are working seven-days a week to repair road damage in the wake of recent heavy rainfall events. “Once that has been completed, we will shift our attention to patrolling other sections of the network and responding to customer
feedback about the location of potholes and pavement damage.” The Wagga Wagga LGA has 1,200km of sealed and
THE SQUEEZE MUSIC FESTIVAL HEADLINES BIG YEAR OF EVENTS The new year is promising to be bigger and brighter for Wagga Wagga, with a range of major events already on the calendar for the first half of 2022. Wagga Wagga City Council this week announced the city has been selected as one of just four regional locations in NSW for the national tour of The Squeeze Festival. The festival, which is presented by ARIA Award winners Lime Cordiale, and Chugg Music, will take place at Conolly Park on Saturday 23 April 2022. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the 18+ years event is expected to draw a crowd of between 5,000–6,000. “It is great to bring a music event of this calibre to our city,” Ms Hamilton said. “Our strategic plans and Youth Forums have consistently identified the need to have more live music, festivals and larger scale events in Wagga Wagga. “With approximately 25 per cent of our population aged under 30, The Squeeze aligns well and we’re confident it will be well

The festival will be headlined by Lime Cordiale, who will be joined by Thelma Plum, Client Liaison, The VANNS, merci, mercy and Teenage Dads. Promotor Michael

Chugg said a local band, yet to be confirmed, will open the festival event in Wagga Wagga. “It’s a great line up and will be a great day,” Mr Chugg said. Events are a key driver of visitation to Wagga Wagga. Ms Hamilton said The Squeeze, along with the other events scheduled for 2022, will bring a much-need economic boost to the city. “After the ups and downs of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is great to see major events returning in the
new year,” Ms Hamilton said. “This includes the NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference carnival, Gears and Beers, the Academy Games, Stone the Crows Festival and, of course, the NRL game between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm.” For further information about tickets for The Squeeze Festival, which go on sale at midday on 3 December 2021, visit squeezefest.com.au

1,100km of unsealed roads to maintain. Roads are generally designed for a 20-year life and then should be renewed. Mr Faulkner said while Council should be carrying out more bitumen reseals and crack sealing, funding and the weather have been an issue. “We do receive a lot of grant funding from the NSW and Federal government through programs such as Fixing Country Roads, Fixing Local Roads, Roads to Recovery and Regional Roads grants,” Mr Faulkner said. “However, it still falls short of what’s required to address the backlog
in maintenance and renewal, while the weather presents its own risks and challenges to how we do the roadworks. “It’s driving innovation, putting the focus on different construction methodology to enable the work to be carried out over a shorter period to reduce the risk of the road base getting saturated.” Community members can report pothole damage to Council through the Snap Send Solve app on their smart phone, through Council’s website at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ servicerequests or by lodging a report through Customer Service at the Civic Centre or by calling 1300 292 442.
Get registered for Outback Lifesaver ‘22 The popular Outback Lifesaver program will return to Wagga Wagga early next year and registrations to get involved in this unique opportunity are now open. After the successful launch of Outback Lifesavers in January this year, Royal Life Saving NSW and Wagga Wagga City Council is pleased to be offering the program for a second year. The revamped 8-week program will run each Sunday starting 23 January 2022 for youth aged U8 - U13, providing an opportunity for youngsters to develop their lifesaving skills and understanding of safety around water, particularly inland waterways. Royal Life Saving NSW’s Lifesaving Participation Coordinator Georgina Ryan said the Outback Lifesaver program will assist with addressing key areas of aquatic and community water safety knowledge in a safe, fun and active
environment. “This is another great opportunity for local youth to learn and get all the benefits of a water safety program designed for inland waterways such as rivers, lakes and dams,” Ms Ryan said. “It will enable kids to enjoy a lifetime of fun in and around the water with their parents, friends and peers.” Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre’s Aquatics Supervisor Taileigh King said education about water safety and learning to respect the river at a young age provided important skills which would stay with the participants for life. “Learning those basic skills now will help to prepare them when they’re in situations around the water with their family and friends,” Ms King said. “We aim to provide them with the knowledge to identify any risks and to be young leaders when swimming and enjoying water activities with their
friends, and to pass on that knowledge to keep a safer environment.” Registration is also open for volunteers, parents or community members, who would like to help during the program and can join their child's session. The Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report 2021 showed that 76 (26 per cent) drowning deaths in 2020/21 occurred in river/creek locations and 27 (9 per cent) drowning deaths occurred in lake/ dam locations in 2020/21. Rivers and creeks continue to be the location with the largest number of drowning deaths. Parents and carers can also use the NSW Active Kids Vouchers to sign up to Outback Lifesavers. VOID! First Nations artists explore challenging theme
Wagga Wagga Art Gallery recently launched VOID, an exhibition which brings together First Nations artists from across Australia who use a broad range of mediums including photography, drawing, painting, film, ceramics and sculpture. Exhibition curator Emily McDaniel attended the launch where she gave a brief address to the audience describing the void as “a spatial concept; it can refer to our history, or ways of seeing or thinking”. “VOID has toured across Australia over the past two years, and it is very significant to me as a Wiradjuri woman that it ends on Wiradjuri country here in Wagga Wagga.” Ms McDaniel invited
Wiradjuri Elders Aunty Cheryl Penrith and Professor Sue Green to partake in the ceremonial placement of stones for Hayley Millar-Baker's artwork Meeyn Meerreeng (Country at Night). VOID is on display at the gallery until Sunday 30 January 2022. Elsewhere at the gallery, primary students from across the Riverina can see their work on display at the E3 art space, as part of the gallery’s annual First Nations Outreach program. The innovative and exciting exhibition marramarra: make, do, create showcases student work from Kapooka, Yanco, Uranquinty, Sturt, Lockhart Central, Lake Albert, Red Hill, and Tumut
public schools, whilst Yanco Public and Sturt Public participated in the program. Gallery Curator - Learning and Engagement Linda Elliott said the HOME Program ran through three terms and utilised online learning platforms such as zoom meetings and live streams where face to face teaching was not possible. “Students learnt about Wiradjuri artists and their work and explored ideas of what Wiradjuri means to them through their own creative artmaking.” marramarra: make, do, create is on display until Sunday 20 February 2022. Entry is free. For more information, visit waggaartgallery.com.au/ whats-on
