'Bigger and better' Master plan to see Livestock Marketing Centre continue to grow
It’s already unmatched nationally in a number of areas and now a strategic master plan will ensure the Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) continues to be one of the best facilities in Australia. More than $387M worth of stock was sold through the LMC in the last financial year – about 1.85 million sheep and 222,000 cattle. “Now is the right time to grow this
important facility to ensure it continues to be one of the premier livestock centres in the country,” Council’s Director Commercial and Economic Development James Bolton said. “The LMC is the premier livestock selling centre for cattle, sheep and lambs in southeast Australia. “Since 1979, the LMC has led the way in livestock sales and helped pioneer ring selling of cattle in Australia. “It provides an estimated $32.6 million in gross regional product to the local economy and supports in excess of 200 jobs through
direct and flow-on effects. “This strategic master plan will build on its long history and ensure it continues to be one of the premier livestock centres in the country,” Manager of the Livestock Marketing Centre, Paul Martin said. The LMC was designed with an estimated capacity of about 2700 cattle and 27,000 sheep, which it is now consistently exceeding. A key part of the master plan is outlining the infrastructure needed to expand the LMC’s capacity to meet the industry’s current and future needs.
“The first step is to increase the volume to 5500 cattle and 45,000 sheep, almost double its original capacity,” Mr Martin said. “Long term, there is the potential to make the LMC large enough to accommodate 8500 cattle and 70,000 sheep.” Along with increasing the LMC’s capacity, the master plan also outlines how to accommodate changes in environmental, animal welfare and work health and safety legislation. The immediate expansion works will begin in the 2016/17 financial year.

Marrambidya Wetland officially opened From Front Page Council’s Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said the wetland is a great asset for the community. “The Marrambidya Wetland improves our natural environment, celebrates our Wirdajuri heritage and culture as well as being a fantastic attraction for visitors,” Ms Summerhayes said. “I encourage everyone to spend some time at the wetland and take in the natural beauty while learning about our environment.” The wetland features three pond areas and a deep water channel, which will allow aquatic animals refuge from warmer surface temperatures during the hot summer months. Large red gum logs have also been retained on site to help construct a habitat for aquatic and terrestrial animals. “With the all the hard
work done over the past year, the next step is to let Mother Nature run its course,” Ms Summerhayes said. “This time next year the wetland will be even more colourful once the plants flourish and native animals start to make it their home. We’re already seeing plenty of wildlife at the wetland – different types of native birds and frogs.” The Marrambidya Wetland project is a joint initiative of Council, the NSW Environmental Trust, with support from Riverina Local Land Services through funding from the Australian Government, together with the Federal Government’s Green Army program planting about 18,000 seedlings. The wetland has links to the Wiradjuri Reserve, Wilks Park and the Riverside Precinct via the Wiradjuri Walking Track. For more information on the Marrambidya Wetland, visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/wetland.
TRADITION: Councillor Garry Hiscock takes part in the smoking ceremony. FULLY STOCKED: Mayor Rod Kendall puts in the first bucket of fish to officially open the new wetland. About 20,000 fish were released as part of the opening, including western carp gudgeons and Murray River rainbow fish as well as shrimp and yabbies.
New role at animal shelter As part of ongoing improvements at Glenfield Road Animal Shelter (GRAS), the City of Wagga Wagga is looking for a qualified and passionate person to take on the role of Animal Welfare Supervisor. The new position will lead the animal attendants and volunteers to provide good animal care, work with rescue groups to rehome pets and promote responsible pet ownership in the community. The Animal Welfare Supervisor role is in line with best practice recommendations made by veterinary specialist Dr Jacob Michelsen in his independent review of the facility. It follows more than $70,000 worth of works approved by Council for GRAS at the recent May Ordinary Meeting, including an exercise area, a facility master plan, automatic drinkers and many other improvements.
“We are committed to making the shelter a best practice facility and a number of positive changes have been made recently,” General Manager Alan Eldridge. “The Animal Welfare Supervisor position and the newly approved works are the next steps in ensuring the best possible care is provided at the shelter. “A further report will go to Council later this month detailing a timetable to implement requests made by the petition received at the May meeting and the recommendations made in Dr Michelsen’s report.” For a copy of the review and to learn more about the shelter, visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/animals. Applications for the Animal Welfare Supervisor close on 17 June. Visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/careers for a position description and more information.

Two road projects, totalling $1M, to improve heavy vehicle safety and productivity are currently under way. Pipe works to improve drainage along a 1.6km section of Byrnes Road, starting at the Oura Road roundabout, was carried out in April. Earthworks to widen and strengthen this section of road are nearing completion with sealing to take place next month. Just down the road, works on Eunony Bridge Road have also started to strengthen a 1.3km section between the Sturt Highway and Eunony Bridge. Traffic controls are in place for both projects. While there are no detours, road users could expect minor delays. Council is continuing to implement strategic projects that upgrade the road infrastructure from the Sturt Highway to the Bomen Business Park. These road projects are critical to support existing industry and
A week-long project to increase pedestrian safety at the intersection of Kincaid and Beckwith streets was carried out recently. The upgrade works at the central Wagga intersection includes installation of new traffic islands in Beckwith Street, four kerb ramps at each corner of the intersection plus new road signs and line markings. The project's budget was about $32,000 and has been fully funded by the Roads and Maritime Service’s NSW Safer Roads Program.

Bomen has been identified as the preferred location in Wagga Wagga for industrial growth, and the RiFL Hub is one part of this vision bringing new rail and road infrastructure and a purposebuilt freight terminal to the city. colleagues don’t like to call Council a business, but I strongly believe that it is important that everybody strives for high standards and accountability, which hopefully encourage respect for everyone in the whole operation. So to you who are contemplating standing for Council, please be aware that it is not a walk in the park. Being a Councillor takes up a great deal of your time
and means that you are committed to two formal meetings a month that require a great deal of your private life and time to deal with many of the issues that have different bearings on many community and business owners alike. Along with those commitments all Councillors are encouraged to attend information workshops, possibly twice a month and in some cases even
more. On top of that you will be encouraged to be part of a number of formal committees that also have a huge bearing on the operations of Council. I encourage any potential candidates willing to put their hand up to stand. Please ring or talk to any current Councillors and they will give you any information you need, but don’t become a Councillor without checking all
