OUR FUTURE IN FOCUS

Wagga Wagga’s view for 2040 laid out in new Community Strategic Plan Wagga Wagga’s vision for the next 23 years and how to get there has been clearly laid out in the Wagga View, Community Strategic Plan 2040. Adopted at the February Council Meeting on behalf of the community, Wagga View lays out the community’s vision for the future, guiding principles and

strategic directions. Deputy Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councilor Dallas Tout said it’s an excellent document. “The guiding principles of thriving, innovative, connected and inclusive provide a solid strategic direction for all the decisions that we elected members make on behalf of the community,” he said. “With more than 3000 responses collected during the engagement process this truly is a plan by the community, for the community.” Acting General Manager, Robert

COUNCILLOR COLUMN At the Council meeting on Monday 27 February, it was resolved that the peer review of the technical report that is contributing to the formulation of the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport

Study 2043 (WWITS 2043) be released for public feedback and submission. The response to date has been passionate to say the least. There are some great suggestions in the study, but there are also some suggestions that are way out of the comfort zone of many within the community.

The silver lining in having something so polarising is that it gets the community focussed on the content of the report and engaging with it by making a submission. I had many conversations with former Councillor Kevin Poynter in the last term of Council in regard to public art. He always reminded me that

regardless of whether a reaction to public art is positive or negative is irrelevant. The crucial thing to remember is that having a reaction either way indicates that you have engaged and formed an opinion. That is exactly the response I would love to see in regard to submissions on the peer review that has been released

councillor.tout@wagga.nsw.gov.au for comment until 31 March. I for one would love to see hundreds of submissions representing a whole range of opinions and suggestions relating to the document. Council will then be able to form an opinion based on the responses of a large number of residents in the LGA. The fewer the

number of submissions received, the less representative the feedback will be. Please take the opportunity to review the document and make a submission using one of the options listed in the story below left. As a Council we can then formulate a decision with greater confidence, based

on the views of a broad range of the community. This is what transparent and responsible representation is truly about. I urge you to take up the challenge and engage in the process!

Whether you drive, walk, wheel or cycle your way around Wagga Wagga we want to hear your thoughts on the future of transport in the city. An independent peer review of the technical report prepared for the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy (WWITS) is currently out for further feedback so make sure you don’t miss your chance to have your say. This independent report is the next step in the thorough process the City of Wagga Wagga is undertaking to develop a blueprint for transport that will turn NSW’s largest regional city into a leading regional city globally. You can download reports on the project page or drop in to the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre to pick up a hard copy. Once you’ve had a read you can make your submission in one of the following ways: Online form: wagga.nsw.gov.au/ourtransport Email: council@wagga.nsw.gov.au Mail: To the General Manager, PO Box 20 Wagga Wagga NSW 2650 In person: Drop it in to the customer service desk at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre

Flood pump housing complete One of the city’s most important pieces of infrastructure has been given a new home. The final pieces to the Tarcutta Street pump shed puzzle were lifted into place yesterday. The control centre and specially designed roof, which can be lifted off for maintenance of the 3.2m high pump, was craned on to the new concrete pump shed yesterday morning. Located on the Main City levee, the shed provides protection to pump15a, which plays an important role during flood events, and was used

THERE’S STILL TIME TO JOIN A COMMITTEE Expressions of interest for two Council Advisory Committees have been extended until 13 March. Further information and application forms for both the Australia Day Committee and Floodplain Risk Management Committee are available at wagga.nsw.gov.au under “Meetings – Advisory Committee”. The Australia Day Committee is focused on planning and delivering the city’s Australia Day celebrations, including the awards ceremony. This year’s Australia Day event at Wagga Beach

attracted thousands of people, with markets, free activities and entertainment proving popular. The Floodplain Risk Management Committee provides advice on the development, implementation and delivery of actions in the Floodplain Risk Management Plan across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. Application forms are also available from the Civic Centre during business hours. For further details, contact Nicole Johnson on 1300 292 442.

The Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium will be extended to the east, providing land for burials for the next five years. The extension, which will accommodate a further 1500 lawn burials, was approved by the Council at the February Ordinary Meeting. The extension is one of

the initiatives outlined in the Stage 2 Master Plan for the Brunskill Road cemetery, aimed at providing future direction for the site The $570,000 works will develop a section in the north-eastern corner of the cemetery and includes landscaping of the site, construction of a ring road including kerb and

during the Murrumbidgee River flood in September 2016. The pump expels internal run off from Tony Island Lagoon and the Wollundry Lagoon in to the Murrumbidgee River. The high-powered pump is capable of pumping 1200 litres of water per second and is used once the river level rises above the city level drainage height. The pump and shed have also been designed so that the pump will keep working even during a high flood event where the level of the river is greater than the shed’s floor level.

39-hectare site (currently only 20-hectares is developed), including ash interment gardens, natural burial sites and aesthetic upgrades including a reflective pool, open-air chapel and parkland area. In 2016, 286 cremations and 246 burials took place at the Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium.

Read all about it! Book sale on next weekend

The Wagga Wagga City Library’s annual summer “book weeding” program is done and dusted, so now it’s time to come and grab a bargain. The Friends of the Library book sale is on next weekend, with thousands of pre-loved books on offer. “Some were too well loved, many were donations and some were just ready to go to a new home,”

Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Subjects range from history, architecture, travel, sport, music and biographies. Or you can escape into the world of fiction with books for adults and children of all ages. “There is plenty to choose from and it is a great way to meet fellow book lovers and readers.”

The sale starts on Friday 10 March at 4pm for early birds and resumes on Saturday from 9am to noon to coincide with the Sprout and About markets, held at the Wollundry Lagoon precinct. The Friends of the Library will use the sale profits to support library programs like One Book One Wagga and Babies Love Books. While you’re at the library grabbing a bargain, be sure to join

if you’re not already a member. “Library membership is free and allows you read all books, newspapers and magazines you want, binge watch your favourite TV shows and movies on DVD and take advantage of even more through the eLibrary,” Ms Campbell said. “There’s literally something for young and old at the library, from Storytime to the Tech Savvy Seniors

classes.” Do you need something to ‘sweeten’ the deal? Use your library card (new or old) during March and place your loan receipt in the lucky prize box to enter into the draw for one of two $30 vouchers to Haran’s Patisserie. To find out more about what’s on at the library, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/library.

S TAGE 2 OF RESE AL PROGR AM BEGINS

For the next two weeks some of the city’s urban roads will have changed traffic conditions applied as the second phase of the annual reseal program gets underway. The reseal program extends the life of the road and is a common preventative road maintenance technique. From today, the following roads will be subject to changes, including full and partial road closures: • Morrow St • O’Reilly St • Tompson St • Beckwith St • Best St • Docker St • Kincaid St ROAD UPGRADES: In the lead up to the city’s urban reseal program • Tarcutta St preparation works to fix some road failures have been carried out the wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads past two weeks, including works on Tarcutta Street this week.

LET THERE BE LIGHT: Works, including digging holes and standing the light poles, started on the Lights for Lake project this week.

E N J O Y T H E L A K E , BU T S TA Y S A F E About half of the 104 solar lights that make up the Lake Albert Lights for Lake project have been installed since the project started on site on Monday. The remainder of the lights are expected to be installed by the end of next week, subject to any unforseen issues. While the works are being undertaken, residents and lake users are reminded not to enter the fenced off work sites. This exclusion applies during and after work hours.

These restrictions are in place to maintain the safety of residents and workers. Temporary blackboards have been set up around the lake displaying daily messages on what sections of the track are impacted. Lights for Lake is a community project, with each pole sponsored by community members of groups, and is being delivered by Committee 4 Wagga, with assistance provided by the City of Wagga Wagga.

Federal funding cuts of more than $200,000 have resulted in the loss of two part-time positions and reduced Child Development Officer hours at Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC). The City of Wagga Wagga has been advised by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training that its annual Community Support Program will cease and the City has taken steps now to ensure the sustainability and viability of the WWRFDC service into the future. “The City of Wagga Wagga has been the Approved Provider for WWRFDC for more than 40 years and as a result of these cuts, it has been necessary to implement efficiencies to ensure a sustainable model of service delivery,” Community Sector

Manager Janice Summerhayes said. “We would like to assure the community that the coordination unit will continue to provide monitoring, training and support to all of our Educators to ensure any impact on Educators’ businesses are minimised. “For parents, there will be no impact to your child’s day in care with their Educator and there will be no impact for families.” The decreased funding has resulted in a restructure of WWRFDC to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the community and facilitates a high level of care and education. Due to the change in funding, two part-time administration positions have been made redundant and Child Development Officer hours have been reduced by 15 hours

per week. The new structure consists of a Service Manager, one full-time Administration Assistant, two part-time Child Development Officers (CDOs) and a part time Educational Leader /Reflective Early Learning Sessions (RELS) Facilitator. With a reduction in administration and CDO funding in the coordination unit, there will be adjustments to the CDO visitation schedules, a reduction in the delivery of the RELS program from three days to two days per week and a focus on the continuous up-skilling of Educators and the coordination unit team to streamline administrative processes. The new structure will come into effect from Monday 10 April.

Projection lighting up Civic Centre until 8 March A week-long workshop with professional artists and young people is currently lighting up the Civic Centre. Last October, artists Heidrun LÖhr and Hans Bildstein worked with a group of young people to develop their skills in photography and stop-start animation, as well as traditional mediums such as collage and shadow puppets. The digital content created is now being beamed onto the lagoon side of the Civic Centre through the city’s digital projectors. Work in 3 Parts documents the process as well as the work the young people created, plus work by the artists inspired by the workshop. The projection runs each night from 8pm to midnight until 8 March. If you an emerging artist or tertiary creative arts student with an interest in digital art, applications are now open for the third NightLights Masterclass with digital artist Joel Zika.
