Respect the focus of ex-player's program Former Canberra Raiders captain Alan Tongue has been in Wagga this week hosting workshops with five schools and sporting clubs, to teach young people about equity, respect and healthy relationships. The workshops were organised by Wagga Wagga City Council and are part of a greater project aimed at changing attitudes, norms and behaviours that lead to inequality and disrespect and potentially, violence. Alan’s visit to Wagga comes out of the
partnership between Council and the Canberra Raiders to host an NRL game in Wagga Wagga on Saturday 4 May at McDonald’s park. “We are delighted that the Raiders and Council have been able to secure Alan Tongue for these workshops,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “His work to promote healthy and respectable relationships, build selfesteem and saying no to violence are the messages we are using to promote equity and respect through our grassroots project. “Alan was a strong leader on the football field and is now a strong advocate for developing and fostering relationships built on respect. “As we are leading a community campaign working to prevent domestic violence in our community, we need to
work from the ground up. “We need to promote and normalise gender equality in public and private life. “Having our young people thinking about the importance of building strong, trusting relationships is key to instilling positive attitudes and behaviours for life. “If we can stop the disrespectful behaviour before it starts, then we are building strong foundations for our community to have in their future relationships. “This is a great opportunity for children and young adults to learn from a wellknown and respected role model.” The project and Wagga City Council’s Equity and Respect team are made possible through NSW Government Funding received by Wagga Women’s Health Centre in 2018 and is delivered by Wagga Wagga City Council.
EQUITY AND RESPECT: Mount Austin High School's Kori-Paige Carr with David Shillington and Alan Tongue at one of the workshops.
