Weekly information from us to you

Wagga comes down with footy fever Tickets have been selling fast for today’s RaidersPanthers NRL game at McDonald’s Park. The 4 May game kicks off at 3pm, with gates opening at 12.30pm before the 12.45pm Jersey Flegg curtain-raiser game. Any remaining tickets will be available to purchase at the gate on game day, but will cost an additional $5 on the pre-purchase ticket price. Footy fans are encouraged to leave the car at home and get a lift to McDonald’s Park, with free buses into the CBD available after the game. Parking is available at the Exhibition Centre, with a gold coin donation to Rotary. Please note part of Copland Street will be closed from 4pm to 6pm on 4 May to allow traffic to exit in both directions after the game. LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Raiders captain Jarrod Croker leads the captain's run at McDonald's Park on Friday ahead of the NRL clash with the Penrith Panthers.

Respect the focus of ex-player's program Former Canberra Raiders captain Alan Tongue has been in Wagga this week hosting workshops with five schools and sporting clubs, to teach young people about equity, respect and healthy relationships. The workshops were organised by Wagga Wagga City Council and are part of a greater project aimed at changing attitudes, norms and behaviours that lead to inequality and disrespect and potentially, violence. Alan’s visit to Wagga comes out of the

partnership between Council and the Canberra Raiders to host an NRL game in Wagga Wagga on Saturday 4 May at McDonald’s park. “We are delighted that the Raiders and Council have been able to secure Alan Tongue for these workshops,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “His work to promote healthy and respectable relationships, build selfesteem and saying no to violence are the messages we are using to promote equity and respect through our grassroots project. “Alan was a strong leader on the football field and is now a strong advocate for developing and fostering relationships built on respect. “As we are leading a community campaign working to prevent domestic violence in our community, we need to

work from the ground up. “We need to promote and normalise gender equality in public and private life. “Having our young people thinking about the importance of building strong, trusting relationships is key to instilling positive attitudes and behaviours for life. “If we can stop the disrespectful behaviour before it starts, then we are building strong foundations for our community to have in their future relationships. “This is a great opportunity for children and young adults to learn from a wellknown and respected role model.” The project and Wagga City Council’s Equity and Respect team are made possible through NSW Government Funding received by Wagga Women’s Health Centre in 2018 and is delivered by Wagga Wagga City Council.

EQUITY AND RESPECT: Mount Austin High School's Kori-Paige Carr with David Shillington and Alan Tongue at one of the workshops.

FRESH PROVES POPUL AR W ITH WAGG A CO M M U N IT Y

Fresh 2019 has reached new heights in its second year, with countless people experiencing something new across the month of April. The Fresh program creatively combines Seniors Festival and Youth Week celebrations into a month-long program of talks, workshops and events for people of all ages and backgrounds. Presented by Wagga Wagga City Council, the diverse and engaging Fresh program

celebrated food, art, culture, music, history and more. “The saying ‘something for everyone’ rings true with Council’s month-long Fresh festival,” Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “Wagga Wagga is a diverse community and the concept behind Fresh is to bring people of different ages, backgrounds and cultures together. “The community jumped at the opportunity to learn something

new or experience something different, with many of the events and activities booked out.” Highlights this year included Father Rod Bower’s TED-style talk on creating a respectful society, fermenting workshops, wine appreciation with Charles Sturt University winemaker Campbell Meeks, French classes, songwriting workshops with the award-winning Alexander Gow of band Oh Mercy, and the funfilled chaos of Ping Pong WoW.

Calling on Wagga’s business community to help shape the economic development strategy for the region. Wagga Wagga City Council are looking for our business community to provide feedback that will guide our long-term economic development strategy.

Feedback to help finalise cycling network design

Now that State Government funding of $11.35M is locked in, Council is continuing community consultation as the design of the city’s 43km dedicated commuter cycling network is finalised. The network of links will provide a safe cycling connection and a healthy transport alternative between the city and suburbs for people travelling for work, school, shopping and leisure.

Construction of one of the cycling links started this month in conjunction with the Main City Levee Upgrade – Stage 2, a threemetre wide all-weather cycle way connecting Johnston Street and Wiradjuri Bridge along the levee bank. The funding was awarded exclusively by the State Government to develop the commuter cycling network and

cannot be diverted for other uses in the city. The locations of safe cycle routes and end-of-trip facilities have been selected following consideration of cycling needs as part of the city’s overall integrated transport vision in the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy 2040 (WWITS). Relevant stakeholders and residents living adjacent to a proposed cycle path have been

sent a letter inviting them to provide their feedback via email, online, post or by attending a community consultation session. Maps of each of the links are available online for residents who wish to check the proposed alignment of the network. All information sessions will be held at Council Meeting Room, Wagga Wagga City Council, 6pm to 7.30pm:

• 7 May: Eastern and Forest Hill Links • 8 May: Central and Southern Links (including Fox Street and levee) • 15 May: All Links • 21 May: All Links More information and detailed network maps can be found at wagga.nsw.gov.au/cycling.

BYO BAGS: One of 60 successful applicants from last year’s grants program, Boomerang Bags Wagga Wagga, have used their funding to make and provide reusable shopping bags to a local supermarket. The team have made 790 reusable bags from donated fabric – each of which takes about 40 minutes to construct. COMMUNITY SUPPORT: Hundreds of community members gathered to reflect on the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka at an interfaith candlelight vigil. Held in the Victory Memorial Gardens on 28 April, the Sri Lankan community lit 250 candles in memory of the victims. Speaking at the vigil were representatives from the Sri Lankan, Buddhist
