BEEFED UP: Livestock Marketing Centre Manager Paul Martin and Project Coordinator Kylie Crouch take a look over the new calf shed, which is the first stage of Wagga Wagga City Council's $3M upgrade of the premier selling centre in south-eastern Australia.
BIGGER AND BETTER
New calf shed first stage of $3M LMC expansion works Selling calves or store cattle at Wagga Wagga’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) is now easier and safer for both people and livestock. A new undercover calf/store cattle shed is the first stage of a $3M expansion project at the LMC to be complete and in use. “The shed has 88 new pens and nine
holding yards at the rear. There are two raised walkways for buyers and three auctioneer walkways overlooking the pens. There are also lanes between each row of pens for the stock to easily move through the facility,” LMC Manager Paul Martin said. “Feedback from our users has been positive, with the upgrades improving space and conditions for those who use the calf/store cattle component of the regular market.” Relocating the calf/store cattle area has also made way for an expansion of the

existing cattle yards. The old calf area has been transformed into a new receival and draft area, complete with cattle ramp and crush and a large number of stack pens and delivery yards. “Our larger cattle yards increase the holding capacity from a nominal 2700 cattle to 5500, which addresses both a current capacity shortfall and creates the foundation for future projected growth,” Mr Martin said. “The expansion upgrades are part of the LMC’s Strategic Master Plan, which helps to support growth of the facility and ensures
the centre retains its status as a premier selling centre in south-eastern Australia.” The next stage of the upgrade includes construction of an elevated pedestrian walkway built above the cattle yards, improving public safety to the cattle selling ring, canteen area and amenities. A new internal road for improved traffic flow and safety has also been constructed at the eastern end of the facility. The expansion works are due for completion later this month.

WHEELS IN MOTION: Wagga Wagga City Council’s Parks and Recreation Assets Officer Rob Owers and Wagga kids, Toby Owers, 6, (left) and Riley O’Keefe, 12, test out the new pump track at Tolland’s Emblen Park. The track will be officially opened with a free community celebration on Wednesday 15 November.
City's youth pumped up for opening of new track
The fences are down and the first tyre marks have been left on the city’s new pump track. Located at Tolland’s Emblen Park, the pump track is the first of its kind in the city. “The pump track provides a different recreational space for Wagga youth, and even adults, to test out their skills on,” Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said. “The smooth asphalt surface of the track means that whether you are part of the city’s large cycling community, or are a scooter rider or skateboarder, you can make the most of the track, regardless of skill level or age. “The track will also offer a range of social and physical benefits for all users.” The Wagga Wagga pump track
OFFICIAL OPENING
A free community celebration will be held on Wednesday 15 November for the official opening of the new pump track. Head on down to Emblen Park, Bruce Street Tolland any time from 4pm to 6pm. Test out the new pump was designed in consultation with local cycle enthusiasts and specialist pump track architects Dirt Art. The track features a continuous figure-eight course with a track running through the middle. The course is made from compacted earth and features an asphalt surface. At its highest point the track stands about twometres tall.
track and enjoy: • Free barbecue • Bicycle maintenance workshops by Wagga Mountain Bike Club • Pump track riding demonstrations • Pairs racing competitions • Bicycle merchandise The track site also features a landscaped rock fence, picnic setting and four solar-powered motion detection lights which will be installed in the coming months. The track has been funded by a $50,000 grant through the FACS Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) and a $30,000 contribution from Wagga Wagga City Council.
NEW BINS FOR SHARPS SAFETY Wagga Wagga City Council has introduced two new community sharps disposal bins, one at Wilks Park and the other at Tolland Community Centre. Residents can utilise the bins for sharps that have been generated by non-clinical activities in the home or public facilities, such as needles, syringes and lancets used by patients with diabetes or other medical conditions or injecting drug users. The introduction of the new bins ties in with Council’s broader campaign to encourage residents to ‘Be Sharps Smart’. “We want to encourage people to dispose of sharps correctly, as it is in the best interest of the broader community” Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanan said. “As a part of our campaign, we’ve created an illustrated children’s book that educates
children about what to do if they find needles or other sharp objects in public places.” If children find a sharp object, they should step away and notify an adult straight away. Adults should call Council or the NSW Needle CleanUp Hotline on 1800 633 353. A trained person will then come and collect the object. Most importantly do not attempt to pick up the needle or syringe. Sharps bins are an important community facility that allow for community sharps to be disposed of correctly, which reduces the risk of safety concerns. These bins are distinctive large bins and it is important they are not used for general rubbish. There are now 19 drop-off points located across the community, for a full list of locations visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ sharps.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
I had the pleasure of welcoming Premier Gladys Berijiklian to Wagga Wagga on Wednesday. This is the third visit by the Premier since August last year. For those old enough, there is a line from the Newcastle song that states: “Never let a chance go by”. So with that in mind I did
ask the Premier when the announcement could be expected for the next stage of the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital. The Premier replied it was “imminent”. •••• I am sounding like a broken record but I will repeat … this is the most exciting time the city of Wagga Wagga has experienced. Just look at what is happening: • Stage one of the Main City
Levee bank upgrade is underway • Much-needed extensions to the Livestock Marketing Centre are underway and the first stage is complete • Design work for the new $9M multi-purpose stadium at Equex is underway • The $35M enabling road works at Bomen are nearing completion • Tenders for the design work for the new Eunony Bridge have been let • Discussions are continuing

re the $50M intermodal freight centre at Bomen • Plans to upgrade airport infrastructure are on the drawing board • Work will start shortly on the new $10M harness racing facility • Discussions are taking place with state representatives of at least three major sporting groups regarding funding for upgrades of Wagga Wagga sporting facilities • The Department of Defence is looking at a $800M-plus upgrade of
Wagga Wagga’s defence force bases over the next 10 years There has also been some positive news concerning expansion in the private sector which should have a flow on effect for the whole community. •••• Last week the city hosted former students of the Wagga Teachers College. Many thousands of teachers began their careers here in Wagga Wagga and throughout their careers impacted the lives of tens of
thousands of students. It reminds me of the expression “if you can read this, thank a teacher”. I did have the opportunity to meet a number of the 340 teachers who returned to Wagga Wagga for the reunion. They remarked on the positive change the city had undergone since their student days along with the vibrancy of the city.

Y O U T H S H A R E T HE IR ID E A S A T F O R UM Feedback flowed in at Wagga Wagga City Council’s youth forum on Monday, with local youth sharing bright ideas on how Council can better tailor services and communications to young people. A total of 20 people attended the three-hour forum, and were entertained by MC for the event, comedian Nath Valvo, who was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The forum provided an opportunity for Council to collect feedback from youth on leadership and volunteer opportunities, events, employment, housing, transport and professional development
opportunities. “A great group of young people attended the forum and we were able to capture valuable feedback that allows us to have a clearer idea of what future youth engagement should look like,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. The forum is part of an extensive consultation program with youth, which includes workshops with local schools, workshops with local youth organisations and an online survey that is open until 10 November and can be completed at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ youthengagement.
NEW IDEAS: Youth from around the city attended a forum to share their thoughts on how Council can better tailor services to them.
