ROADWORKS ON A ROLL Rehabilitation works along Red Hill Road and Stanley Street have been completed

by Wagga Wagga City Council contractors in recent weeks, with more roadworks across the city scheduled in February.

The Red Hill Road works between Plumpton Road and Tamar Drive, and the section between Glenfield Road and Bourke Street, were completed in late January with Stanley Street, between Leavenworth Drive and Lake Albert Road, finished this week.

These works also follow the completion of the Kooringal Road upgrade in midJanuary.

FUSION22 multicultural street festival is returning to the spectacular Victory Memorial Gardens on Saturday 9 April 2022.

Council and cultural partners, the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, are inviting Expressions of Interest from local performers and food & drink

vendors to entertain and feed the festival crowds.

Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said FUSION22 is expected to be well supported by locals and draw in crowds from across the Riverina region this autumn.

“Planning is well underway and we’re curating a diverse line-up of music and entertainment to be announced closer to the event,” Ms Summerhayes said.

“Along with the live music, the street food precinct is one of the most popular parts of FUSION. Festival goers will be able to feast on authentic and modern street style food from around the globe.

"If you are motivated to add your traditional cuisine to the food line-up,

then submit your expression of interest before 25 February.

“We’re also looking for community performers to help add to the vibrant festival atmosphere.”

Road upgrades continue From front page The Red Hill Road upgrades have repaired areas along this main southern thoroughfare which deteriorated due to ongoing heavy rainfall in recent months.

Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said it was a positive result for Council to have sections along Red Hill Road, Kooringal Road and also Stanley Street finished within five weeks.

The rehabilitation on all sections used a pavement recycling methodology being trialled by Council. Mr Faulkner said Council was pleased with the outcome so far.

“There have been many advantages to using this methodology with one of

the main strengths being the reduced time it has taken to complete a significant project,” Mr Faulkner said.

“We had Kooringal Road done in about two weeks … a job that traditionally would take 10 weeks.

Red Hill Road had two sections completed in two weeks. The top section of Stanley Street was done in a week.”

Contractors will now start work along Northcott Parade followed by Darlow and Slocum streets.

“We’re making good progress on these rehabilitation works … weather conditions have been ideal with minimal interruptions despite some rainfall,” Mr Faulkner said.

Community opens its heart to Christmas Food Appeal Community members have again opened their hearts and their pantries in the spirit of giving to support Wagga Wagga City Library’s recent Christmas Food Appeal.

The appeal was launched in November last year and finished on Christmas Eve with another overwhelming response from the community which has supported the annual event for more than 20 years.

Representatives from the Salvation Army arrived this week to collect a van load of donations which were dropped off at the library in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Manager Library Services Claire Campbell said the generosity of people in the community was once again greatly appreciated.

“Every year the generosity shown towards the appeal is astounding,” Ms Campbell said.

“This is about giving everyone a chance to contribute and to make a difference to someone in need.

"We would like to thank everyone who supported the appeal and assure them that the Salvation Army will now

The appeal was originally started as “Food for Fines” which gave community members the opportunity to

pay off their library fines with a donation of non-perishable food. From 1 July last year, the library stopped having fines for overdue book returns but the tradition of the Christmas Food Appeal has continued.

Exploring identity through the human face A major new exhibition developed by artist Vic McEwan during three years of creative research exploring medical science and contemporary arts practice is set to open at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery this coming week.

Face to Face: The New Normal explores issues of identity and the self through the human face.

Vic McEwan, Artistic Director and co-founder of The Cad Factory in Narrandera, has spent the past two years working at the Sydney Facial Clinic with facial paralysis patients as part of his PhD research.

“A lot of my practice is engaging with the real world in some way,” Mr McEwan said.

“I don’t define things until I meet the patients and doctors, sit with them and they share their stories and then it’s from those discussions that the ideas emerge.

“I was very careful from the beginning that I didn’t want this show just to be about facial nerve paralysis.

“We all have a face we present to the world. Our identity is through our face, the way we’re judged can be through people looking at our face, so that’s something that we can relate to.

“I want audiences to come here and appreciate this for its beauty, but also to consider the role that arts can play outside of the arts sector, in the broader community.”

The exhibition features both intimate and largescale interactive installations using sound, sculpture,

photography, projection, performance, 3-D scanning and 3-D printing.

This includes an installation comprising almost 300 3-D faces and the interactive Biomedical Composing Machine.

“You can connect medical sensors to yourself which take your blood oxygen levels, your heart rate, your temperature and those numbers trigger different sounds and pitches to create a composition in real time from your medical data,” Mr McEwan said.

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery has a long relationship of working with Vic McEwan and the CAD Factory.

Art Gallery Curator Andrew Halyday said Face to Face: The New Normal is not the artist’s first show at the gallery, but it is Vic McEwan’s most ambitious.

“We have used the entire lower gallery to create considered, quiet spaces within a big environment as the emotive nature of many of these works deserved breathing room, pauses between the works,” Mr Halyday said.

“It touches my heart that Vic would choose to present here in Wagga Wagga. It does feel like a true collaboration when he comes to show with us, and I think that’s just a roll-on effect of his socially engaged art practice and his desire to continue that into the gallery environment.”

You can see Face to Face: The New Normal at the gallery from Tuesday 8 February 2022. Its official opening will be held on Saturday 19 February 2022.

Report to focus on playground shade Wagga Wagga City Council will prepare a report auditing the degree of shade protection at all Council-owned playgrounds after the matter was discussed at a recent Council meeting.

The notice of motion, presented at Council’s 31 January 2022 Ordinary Meeting, also requested that Council calculate the costs of installing shade sails and planting mature trees at the playgrounds.

Upstaged! Civic Theatre stage to be refurbished The Civic Theatre’s stage will be upgraded after Wagga Wagga City Council received a $41,000 grant under Create NSW’s Creative Capital Funding Program – Minor Works and Equipment Round 1.

The project will fund the replacement of the ageing and unlevel stage.

Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said it will ensure the only professional theatre in the Eastern Riverina can continue to provide a safe and fit-forpurpose space for performances and events.

“This stage receives heavy use each year with more than 150 performances and audiences of over 50,000 each year,” Ms Campbell said.

“It was last refurbished over 20 years ago and is now uneven and sagging in places which makes it hard

to level sets to keep them steady.

“It also makes it challenging for people in wheelchairs, dancers or actors who need to use props on wheels.”

The top two layers will be removed, and a levelling compound will be laid down and then the top layers replaced and painted. This will mean it is flat and even and will make building sets and performing safer and easier.

“This upgraded stage will mean the Civic Theatre can accommodate touring productions as well as community performances and provide the high-quality space they require.”

The stage upgrade project is expected to start early next year and be completed by March 2023.

Bag a bargain of books at library’s annual sale The Friends of the Library Book Sale is back again and it is a great opportunity to bag a bargain on some quality titles.

Proceeds from the two-day sale will go back into supporting programs and services at the Wagga Wagga City Library for the benefit of all community members.

The book sale will be held on Friday 11 February 4pm to 5.45pm and Saturday 12 February 9am to 12 noon in the downstairs children’s area at the library located in the Civic Centre.

Library Manager Claire Campbell said the sale will feature adult fiction and non-fiction, children’s and young adult novels, history, health and DIY books, DVDs and more.

“Our last book sale was in March 2020 and now we’re back and hoping to see plenty of community support for what really is one of the library’s long-running, highly valued events,” Ms Campbell said.

“Everyone is invited to attend and select from an impressive range of books, magazines and movies. There’s a fantastic selection this year

“The Friends of the Library volunteers have been supporting the library for 30 years and have raised thousands of dollars over that time to support the library service. It’s also great to give these books and resources a second life,” Ms Campbell said.

The Friends of the Library are an important group of volunteers providing valuable opportunities for like-minded community members to come together and get active.

Their next meeting is on Tuesday 8 February at 4.45pm at the library.
