WORKING TOGETHER: Mates Gully Restaurant & Accommodation’s Marcia McCoy (left) and Council’s Visitor Economy Development Officer Kimberly Parker discuss the benefits of being part of the Tourism Partner Program.
Partner program boost to business Tourism businesses and organisations are invited to work together to build greater awareness and encourage visitation to the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds region.
“It’s been incredibly beneficial, both at the beginning to get our name out there, and then later for ongoing support and visibility,” Ms Durman said. “The proactive approach to marketing our region has a far greater reach than we could achieve by ourselves. “I am looking forward to continuing on as a member of the program and excited to see what the next 12 months brings.” To be eligible to sign up, tourism businesses and organisations must be within a 120km radius of the Wagga Wagga LGA and must be accessible and cater to visitors. Program categories include attractions, restaurants and eateries, accommodation and event venues, along with a new ‘start-up’ category for tourism businesses in their first two years of operation. The benefits of becoming a Wagga Tourism Partner include:
• Inclusion in the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide and other digital and print publications such as the Top Spot guides, Events and Conference Guide; • Collaboration with local government and other local businesses who are passionate and excited to build and advocate tourism in our region; and, • Industry development through staff support and access to workshops and networking events Signups are available all year round, however, to be included in the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide businesses and organisations are encouraged to sign up by 28 July 2021. For further information or to apply, head to www.visitwagga.com/partners or contact partners@wagga.nsw.gov.au or call 1300 292 442.

One Tree for Me program
The first seedling giveaway for Wagga Wagga City Council’s One Tree for Me initiative was a great success, with over 1500 free seedlings claimed by residents on World Environment Day last weekend. Through the One Tree for Me campaign, Council aims to get 65,000 seedlings planted in the local area over the next six years – one seedling for every resident. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said it was encouraging to see so many residents turn up to collect seedlings. “We had around 300 households visit, with everyone very enthusiastic about getting the different seedlings into their garden,” Ms Kent said. “People were keen to find out what the different species would provide for their backyard, whether it was to attract birds or good for bees and so on. It’s reassuring to see that so many people care about our environment and are happy to get planting in their own backyards to improve our region’s biodiversity.” Ms Kent said winter was a great time to get natives into the garden. “This is our best planting season,” Ms Kent said. “It seems funny, you normally associate planting with spring, but winter is when we get most of our rainfall. If you get your plants into the ground now they have enough time to establish their root systems before having to deal with our extreme summer heat.” Council’s Environment team is busy preparing for Schools Tree Day on Friday 30 July, shortly followed by National Tree Day

Discover Lost Lanes this winter COMEDY FEST 2021 IS UNDERWAY Come out of hibernation to uncover and celebrate new ‘lost lanes’ across the city as the Lost Lanes festival returns in a new format on Saturday 26 June. After moving the festival online last year due to COVID restrictions, the festival is back in physical form for 2021, and this year it will be a movable feast of arts, eats, beats and ice skating. Eight locations will be activated between 4pm and 9pm, stretching from Wonderland Lane on Baylis Street to the ABC Riverina carpark off Fitzmaurice Street. Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said there will be mini events in laneways, carparks and other nooks and crannies in the CBD, as well as the Victory Memorial Gardens, Wollundry Lagoon and Civic Centre precincts. “There will be pop-up bars and street food vendors, lighting projections, local and visiting musicians and performers, along with an outdoor ice rink in the Victory Memorial Gardens,” Ms Hamilton said. “We encourage festival goers to spend time at each site before moving on to the next to ensure they get a taste of all the different arts, eats and beats on offer. “It’s a new way to explore our city and enjoy it in unsuspecting and delightful ways. Rug up and head out with friends and families and support local businesses as well.” It is estimated the Lost Lanes festival will inject $1.35 million into the local economy and the ice rink an additional $1 million. The 25x15-metre ice rink, which has been cofunded by the State Government’s Department of Regional NSW, will launch at Lost Lanes and remain in place for the two weeks of the June/July school holidays. The ice rink is one part of a festival hub, which includes large light art installations, which will also
remain in the city for the same two week period. Dine and Discover vouchers can be redeemed for skate sessions when purchasing in person at the on-site ticketing office only. Lost Lanes is a free event presented by Wagga Wagga City Council with funding support from the State Government’s Destination NSW and Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. The much-anticipated Wagga Comedy Fest is now on and promises to warm you up with laughs, entertainment, delicious food and drinks this long weekend. A premiere line up of comedians has encouraged early sales, with some shows already sold out, but others still have seats available for those who like to plan late. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said this year’s festival is larger than ever before with five days of laughs to take advantage of the long weekend. “This year we have seen the highest number of pre-sale tickets ever. People just want to get out and have a good time,” Ms Campbell said. “My hot tip for this year is to plan ahead because you might miss out if your plan is to buy on the night.” Wagga Comedy Fest 2021 officially kicked off on Wednesday night (9 June) with a sold-out show by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. “Wil Anderson’s show Wilegal is selling pretty quickly.” Ms Campbell said. “We deliberately booked two nights with Wil because the show is all about getting arrested on the way to Wagga. We knew there would be a lot of interest in seeing him perform the show here, where it all began.” The popular Winter Markets is also back, with hot food, drinks and free laughs on offer from Thursday to Saturday (12 June). “We are excited to welcome Easy Catering to the markets this year with loaded hot dogs, hot chips and feel good winter food. Marbull Catering are also new with haloumi fries, brisket burgers and noodles featuring on their menu.” The crowd favourites have not been forgotten though with the Smoking Butcher serving up meals to all carnivores on Saturday night and the Junee Licorice &
Chocolate Factory giving everyone their sugar fix. “The Winter Markets would not be complete without a drink to wash down your meal, so this year we will be keeping it local with Borambola Wines and the Thirsty Crow Brewery keeping you hydrated.” Ms Campbell said The Civic Theatre is accepting Discover NSW voucher for advance bookings, but vouchers are not able to be redeemed on the night for last-minute door sales. These include: • a drag show at The Curious Rabbit • brewery tours at Thirsty Crow Brewing Co • a smoking meats/barbecue class at Food I Am • a pop-up chill zone at the festival by Southern Cross Austereo • a Lost Lanes-inspired glowing forest art installation in store, in the lead up to and on the night of Lost Lanes at Framed by Bek in Kincaid Street Wagga Wagga City Council thanks each business for their support and participation in this year’s festival.

Always source firewood from a reputable dealer. Never collect timber on roadsides. You may apply for a permit to collect firewood from a state forest through Service NSW. The new Bolton Park amenities block will soon be opened and a recent tour of this facility showed what an outstanding addition this will be to our sporting groups and other organisations who utilise the Bolton Park precinct. The expansion of the Livestock Marketing Centre was a collaboration between Council, the Selling Agents Association and the broader rural sector
to upgrade a facility which is now bigger, better and still rated one of the best in Australia. The Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna is a tremendous addition to the city’s facilities. The benefits this will provide to local user groups and the general public are in addition to the events it will attract.
