INCLUSIVE PLAY: Wagga mum Leila Bright and her daughter Mia, 2 with Council’s Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Peter Cook . Wagga is set to get a new inclusive playspace, which will be built in partnership with the Touched By Olivia Foundation.
A play space for everyone The City of Wagga Wagga will partner with national charity Touched By Olivia Foundation to deliver the city’s first inclusive playspace. The Bolton Park playspace will be built and designed for children of all ages and abilities to play side by side. The Touched By Olivia Foundation creates unique, special places that provide social inclusion for all children and their families. Play spaces created in partnership with the Foundation are branded as Livvi’s Place inclusive playspaces. These
playgrounds are in memory of Olivia Perkins, the daughter of Sydney parents John and Justine Perkins, who died of a rare disease when she was eight months old. Wagga Wagga mother Leila Bright, whose eldest daughter was born with a disability, helped unite Council and the Foundation. “The need for an all abilities playground in the city was identified and Council was looking to deliver an all abilities playground this year in accordance with the Wagga Wagga Playground Strategy 2016-2036,” Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Peter Cook said.
“The Touched By Olivia Foundation have worked in partnership to deliver 20 Livvi’s Place playgrounds across the country. The foundation has the knowledge and expertise to create special places where all children can socialise and enjoy the wonders of play. “Council also extends thanks to Ms Bright, for her enthusiasm and ambition has helped bring the two parties together to deliver a fantastic facility for the city.” On Monday, Council resolved to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Touched By Olivia Foundation

for the joint delivery of the playground. The MOU was officially signed by both parties this week. Wagga’s Livvi’s Place inclusive playspace will replace the existing playground at Bolton Park and be located adjacent to the Bolton Park Skate Park. Community and stakeholder contributions helped decide the final design of the play space, which will include characteristics to encourage equal access and play, security and safety and facilities for young and older children and family get-togethers. The City of Wagga Wagga has
committed $100,000 towards the project. Additional grant funding of $10,000 from Northcott and $75,000 from the NSW Government Office of Sport and Recreation have also been contributed. Under the MOU the Touched by Olivia Foundation will contribute, through community fundraising, grants and services, a minimum $100,000 towards the playspace. Extra funding above $100,000 will help provide additional resources for the playground. Construction and completion of the playspace will be carried out during 2017.

Wheels in motion for commuter cycling network Improving commuter cycling is at the forefront of the City of Wagga Wagga’s Active Travel Plan, which was adopted by Council at the October Council Meeting. Council also endorsed a funding application for $785,000 through Transport for NSW, which will see detailed designs created for more than $10.4M worth of proposed bike networks and facilities. The Active Travel Plan covers the Wagga
urban area and aims to increase commuter cycling within the city. The implementation of the Active Travel Plan will benefit the community by increasing capacity and reducing congestion in the overall transport network; reducing environmental impacts; improving public health outcomes and reducing healthcare costs; and improving community wellbeing and social cohesion.
Council received $88,000 from Transport for NSW to undertake the plan, which was part of a three-stage partnership project. The Active Travel Plan was initially being undertaken as a separate section of the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy (WWITS), but has been separated and developed by staff using the technical information from WWITS. The application for $785,000 is stage two
of the Active Travel Plan partnership project which, if successful, will allow detailed designs to take place. The third stage will then be a funding application for project implementation. The plan was developed with extensive community consultation, which provided positive feedback on the provision of active travel infrastructure.
LIBRARY BOOK
SALE ON AGAIN Bargain books and discount DVDs will be up for grabs at the Friends of the Library book sale next weekend. The local community is welcome to join this loyal band of library lovers as they support the library both financially and philosophically. To find out more, of if you’re having a spring clean and want to donate good quality items to the upcoming sale, ring the library on 6926 9700.

It will be a case of cats amongst the peacocks at the Kay household. The Kay family from The Rock are doting pet lovers and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to rehome four male peacocks from the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens Zoo. Sandra Kay, along with her husband, son and granddaughter, were on hand to collect the peacocks last
week and transport them to their new 5000 acre home. Mrs Kay has never owned peacocks, but loves all animals. “We have cats, ducks, chooks and thought the peacocks would be something different and a good talking point,” Mrs Kay said. “They will be fairly low maintenance and nice to look at in the garden.” The Kay family are planning
on naming the birds after the four main characters in the popular children’s cartoon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The peacocks will be housed in a purpose-built pen for the first month to adapt to their new surroundings. They will then be given free range to spread their coloured feathers on the property. The City of Wagga Wagga received about 20 expressions of interest for the peacocks
in October. A new home was sought for the four peacocks as they had outgrown their home at the zoo. Twelve peacocks still call the zoo home. If you would like to visit the peacocks, or see any of the other furry and feathery animals at the zoo and aviary, head to the Botanic Gardens site, open from 9am to 5pm daily.
WORK S ON ‘T R ACK ’
Work on the Wiradjuri walking track at East Wagga Wagga is nearing completion. A section of the track, from Mason Street to Hammond Avenue, has been closed for the past seven weeks for Riverina Water County Council to undertake bridge works and lay a new pipeline near Marshalls Creek. The City of Wagga Wagga has been required to build a new track on top of the new pipeline. This track is to the west of the current track and is being built to the specifications of the $21M levee upgrade project. The walking track will remain closed for the coming weeks for final works to be complete. Pedestrians have been detoured along the footpath sections of Day and Tarcutta streets and on to Hammond Avenue. The Wiradjuri walking track is a 42 kilometre loop around the City of Wagga Wagga. For more information on this project contact Tamarin Taylor, Riverina Water County Council on 6922 0667.

If you’re renovating at home this month make sure you’re prepared to encounter asbestos and know how to dispose of it properly This November is National Asbestos Awareness Month, which aims to educate Australians about the dangers of working with asbestos during home renovations and maintenance and educate them about where asbestos might be found in and around homes and on properties. “Asbestos products can most likely be found in any Australian home built or renovated before 1987 even brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes,” Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline Angel said. “Asbestos can be found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and under floor coverings, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, HARMONY: Dr Jonathon Welch AM leads the One Voice: Wagga Community Choir in a one-day intensive workshop at the Civic Theatre last weekend. Community choir hits high note at special workshop The sultan of sing, Dr Jonathon Welch AM, shared his expertise with the One Voice: Wagga Community Choir members in a special workshop at the weekend. One Voice is the Civic Theatre’s community production for 2016 and Dr Welch put the choir members through an intense day-long workshop. Hundreds of residents are taking part in the choir, which will take to the Botanic Gardens Music Bowl stage for two nights on 18 and 19 November. Dr Welch, the man behind the Choir of Hard Knocks as seen on ABC TV, will be the choral conductor for the two performances and at
the workshop passed on some techniques and approaches to the songs. There was a lot of laughter in the room as participants heard anecdotes and learned more about Dr Welch’s expert approach to singing. The choir has been rehearsing since October and it’s now full steam ahead to the performances, which will be held as part of Social Inclusion Week – which was created by Dr Welch in 2009. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and are available from civictheatre.com.au, the Civic Theatre box office or at the gate on the night.
F R E E T I P D AY O N S U N D AY, 13 N O V E M B E R Having the family around for Christmas this year, but the yard looks a bit shabby? The City of Wagga Wagga’s next Free Tip Day is Sunday 13 November – just in time for some last-minute spring cleaning before the festive season kicks off. There will be no charge for household rubbish, garden waste and mixed recyclables taken to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) on the day, which is open from 7am to 4.30pm. “With Christmas around the corner, it’s the perfect time to tidy up the garden after the recent wet weather, or to clean out the
shed or garage,” Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline Angel said. “Free Tip Days complement the City of Wagga Wagga’s normal service, which includes more materials that can be disposed of for free every day due to increased recycling capability at GWMC.” Televisions, computers and computer equipment can be disposed of for free, not just on Free Tip Day, but every day that the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre is open, as part of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. This offer is available to householders and small
businesses only. “You can also dispose of polystyrene for free all year round at GWMC,” Ms Angel said. “Council can reprocess it on-site for reuse into a range of recycled products.” Special wastes such as tyres, builders waste, refrigerative items, mattresses and gas bottles are not included in the free disposal day and will be charged as per normal fees and charges. Free disposal is limited to cars, vans, utes and single axle trailers only. For more information and a full list of fees and charges, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/freetipday or phone 1300 292 442.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN For those that know me, they know how much I love movies. It is of no surprise that, when asked how it is being one of the new Councillors, I compare it to walking into a movie halfway through
and trying to catch up. You have to learn who the people are, what the plot is and understand the motives - otherwise it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Instead of being a hindrance, a fresh set of eyes can be valuable. During the election our ticket presented ideas for the future of Wagga, while also
calling for improvements in transparency and connection with the community. I plan to spend the next four years implementing them the best I can. Many people advised me that while on Council there will be the unexpected, the challenging, even the frustrating. To all those people I must say how
councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au
correct you are, even a couple of months in. However, what is required is not just the ability to manage those unexpected challenges, but to do so while continuing to look forward. Wagga is growing, which means Wagga is changing. With a close connection between Council and community, the changes can have massive
potential for us all. It would be remiss of me if I didn’t thank the volunteers, supporters, friends and family members who helped out during the election, as well as thanking the people of Wagga who have given me this rare chance, one that will not be taken for granted. I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors and
Council staff over the next four years to the betterment of the city I was born and raised in. (Note: I would never walk into a movie halfway through and start bothering people to explain it. That is terrible movie etiquette.)
