SAFER FOR EVERYONE: Marrambidya Wetland is an on-leash area. Always keep your dogs on their leash to protect the native wildlife. Dog owners are being urged to keep their dogs on a leash at all times, unless they are in a designated off-leash area, to avoid injury and upset to people and native animals. Council staff have found dogs who have been let off their leashes while out for a walk harassing native wildlife both at Marrambidya Wetland and at the Wagga Zoo & Aviary. Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara is particularly concerned by incidents of dog owners allowing their dogs to run up and down the boundary fence line of the zoo, which backs onto the Willans Hill Reserve. “I recently had some people letting their large dog chase the swamp wallabies and emus up and down the fence while they watched on,” Ms McNamara said. “I had to tell the people that this was clearly distressing to the animals and asked if they would please move on – when the animals are stressed and running into the fences, it can cause them serious injury. “Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened.” Two weeks ago, zoo staff arrived at work to discover one of the swamp wallabies had sustained injuries to its left eye and ear overnight. While staff are unsure what exactly caused the injuries, they believe it may
have resulted from the little marsupial fleeing dogs on the other side of the fence. Willans Hill does contain an off-leash area, which is not near the zoo, but is restricted to a section along the ridgeline from Lord Baden Powell Drive to Red Hill Road. The remainder of Willans Hill is an on-leash area. Council’s Manager Environment & Regulatory Services Mark Gardiner said Council is experiencing similar issues at Marrambidya Wetland. “The wetland is also an on-leash area, so it’s imperative that your dog stays on its leash while you’re there,” Mr Gardiner said. “Dogs who are running around off-leash present many potential impacts at the wetlands, including harming bird and animal life by trampling nests, frightening birds which can cause them to abandon their nest, and actually attacking animals. “Letting your dog run around also impacts other people’s enjoyment of the wetlands, including other dog owners with their animals on-leash, and parents of small children. “Please keep your dog on their leash. They’ll enjoy their walk and no one will get hurt. If you want your dog to be able to run off-leash, please take
them to one of our off-leash parks.” Wagga Wagga City Council has provided nine designated off-leash areas across the city for dogs, including enclosed agility tracks at Lake Albert and Gobbagombalin. These locations are areas where dogs can run, exercise and socialise leash-free with other dogs and dog park visitors. NSW legislation requires that all dogs in a public place must be under effective control by means of an adequate chain, cord or leash that is attached to the dog and is held by a person. Volunteers help plant thousands of native seedlings
FOOD SOURCE: Volunteers also planted native grasses which will help feed small birds.
BIODIVERSITY: Council’s Environment team carefully chose a wide variety of seedlings.
.......from front Council is continuing to work towards the 'One Tree for Me' campaign aim of getting 65,000 seedlings planted in our local area over the next six years – one seedling for every resident. The goal is getting closer, with Council donating 8800 native seedlings so far this year: 4000 seedlings for One Tree for Me seedling giveaways; 3500 seedlings for Schools Tree Day; and 1300 seedlings for National Tree Day. Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid said Council’s Environment team was touched by the generosity shown by the Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day volunteers. “All the volunteers were so enthusiastic and happy to be outside planting,” Ms Reid said. “You could feel the positive energy radiating out across Flowerdale Lagoon where we were planting for National Tree Day last Sunday. “A few of the volunteers mentioned that it was a great site, right next to the highway, and they were looking forward to driving past and seeing how it’s progressing.” Council’s Environment team carefully selected a wide variety of native seedlings for both Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day which will benefit our region’s biodiversity.
“Generally, the bigger trees are for bigger birds, and the lower storey trees, such as banksia, wattle and bottlebrush, are for smaller birds like honeyeaters, finches and blue wrens,” Ms Reid said. “We planted a lot of grasses as well, as their seeds will help feed those little birds.” Council also included seedlings which will help attract local pollinators. “We planted silver banksia, which is Wagga Wagga’s floral emblem,” Ms Reid said. “The silver banksia, in addition to the wattle, will help attract and feed microbats. “Hopefully we’ll see all the pollinators popping up in there including microbats and lots of insects like bees and wasps. We hope lizards will also find a home amongst the grasses and trees, and feed on the insects and critters we have attracted – it’ll be a whole little ecosystem. “It will be exciting to see as time goes on, and it’s great we’re getting this rain, because it’ll help give the seedlings the best possible start. “We’ll see what it looks like in a few years.” Council’s next One Tree for Me seedling giveaway will be towards the end of August 2022. Gear up for an influx of events at our new Multisport Cycling Complex
GET ON BOARD: Cycling enthusiast Kris Whybrow and Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook are encouraging local riders to check out the new BMX track at the upcoming Come and Try Day at the Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex. Demand for the facilities at Wagga Wagga’s new $12 million Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve is growing, with several events on the calendar for August. The 2022 AusCycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships will be held at the facility next weekend (13–14 August), followed by the Wagga Wagga Trail Marathon on Saturday 20 August. The quality of the facilities has also drawn the Canberra BMX Club to our city, with the organisation holding a Come and Try Day at the BMX track on Sunday 21 August 2022. The club’s Board Chair Paul Buttel said the event is designed to introduce local residents, particularly kids, to BMX and show them the skills and thrills of BMX racing, which is an Olympic sport. “We are keen to generate interest in Wagga Wagga’s residents for BMX racing and hopefully be the catalyst for creating a club at the Wagga Wagga site,” Mr Buttel said. “We also hope to put on a show for residents showing how family friendly BMX racing is with our members racing from young through to masters.” The two-hour Come and Try session runs from 10am–12pm and is open to riders of all ages – kids, teenagers, adults and seniors – with the Canberra club’s experienced coaches, volunteers, and riders on hand to guide participants. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said the event will give locals the opportunity to get involved in the sport and to check out the new BMX track.
“It’s an important step in encouraging the growth of the sport in our region, hopefully flushing out some interest such as the formation of a club in Wagga Wagga,” Mr Cook said. “We already have a strong cycling community here who regularly use the facilities at the complex for club meetings, and it would be good to see that extended to a local BMX club. “The local support also makes Pomingalarna an attractive destination for regional, state and national level competitions, which deliver economic benefits for the city through visitor spending on accommodation, food and retail.” To find out more or to register for the Canberra BMX Club’s Come and Try Day, visit ridenation.com.au/s/ come-and-try Following closely on the heels of the BMX day is the 2022 AusCycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championship next weekend, which is expected to draw 400 competitors and officials plus their teams and supporters, while around 130 competitors and officials will attend the 2022 Mountain Bike National Gold Level Cross Country Olympic (XCO) event set down for late October. Entries for the Mountain Bike Marathon National Championship close on Monday 8 August at 10am. Entries are also still open for the Wiradjuri Wander; two nonchampionship categories catering to riders aged from 15+ years. Registration can be completed online at: auscycling.org.au

Aunty Mary Atkinson also presented a personal reflection on Aunty Isabel’s life, family, and community work. Cr Dallas Tout concluded his address by thanking Aunty Isabel and looking towards the future. “I hope I am fortunate to continue to work beside you to make Wagga Wagga a place that in years to come will be even stronger in our Wiradjuri consciousness and community actions, a place where Aboriginal children have equitable opportunities and, most importantly, a place of genuine reconciliation for the future generations,” Cr Tout said.
Wagga Wagga City Council has praised local residents for their help in converting household waste into reusable compost through increased use of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bins. FOGO bins are providing a solution to towering piles of rubbish in landfills, instead converting household waste into reusable compost. Gregadoo Waste Management Centre Support Officer Tammie Cook thanked residents for their dedicated used of FOGO bins and disposing of leftovers mindfully. “As a community, together we have diverted 52,000 tonnes of FOGO from landfill since the three bins system was introduced in 2018,” Ms Cook said. “FOGO waste is sorted by hand to remove prohibited items such as nappies and plastics. “The material is then shredded and turned into professionally-made compost that helps our farmers maintain healthy soil to grow crops. “The final product is used primarily in primary production from fruit and nuts to broadacre crops.” It also goes to a few

nurseries for landscape and garden use. Ms Cook reminds people that while we are seeing a reduction in contamination rates in our FOGO waste collection, there is still room for improvement. “Common contaminates in the green lid bin waste collections are soft plastics such as plastic bags and food packaging.” The ‘Let’s Get Our Scrap Together’ FOGO education campaign recently launched in Wagga Wagga with the help of funding from a NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) grant of $10,000. Ms Cook said early feedback suggests the education campaign is proving successful. “The campaign aims to help residents understand the environmental benefits of recycling food waste, and how small changes can make a big impact,” she said. "As a community, we need to get our scrap together and be recovering all of our available food waste in the green lid bin for recycling.” To find out more on how you can get your scrap together, head to wagga.nsw.gov.au/ wasteguides
Q. I have run out of the green compostable liners. Where can I get some more? A. Wagga Wagga residents who get a waste service receive a delivery of liners once a year. If you run out and need more, you can visit our Customer Service counter and get a roll for no extra charge. Q. The supermarket sells biodegradable and recyclable bin liners. Can I put these in the FOGO bin? A. No. Only compostable liners can go in the FOGO bin. All soft plastics go in the general waste red lid bin or can be recycled through the REDcycle scheme. Q. I often run out of room in my red lid bin. What can I do about this? A. Many items can be separated into the three bin system. Use our A-Z guide on our website to help sort your waste. If you still run out of room, you can upsize your general waste red lid bin to a 240L or get an additional bin, for a fee. Q. How can I find out what waste can go in what bin? A. Please visit our website where you will find the A-Z guide on what goes where. If your item is not there, you can call our waste education officer on 1300 292 442.
