CITY OF GOOD SPORTS ON SHOW AT N E W - L O O K H A L L O F FA M E
The City of Good Sports unveiled its new-look Sporting Hall of Fame at the Museum of the Riverina at the weekend. To mark the first major overhaul of the exhibition in almost a decade, former Matildas team member and 2015 Hall of Fame inductee Sally Shipard was the special guest speaker at the launch. Shipard is one of more than 100 members of the Hall of Fame, which includes Wagga sporting greats such as Paul Kelly, Michael Slater, Geoff Lawson and Steve and Chris Mortimer. “Wagga is home to many fantastic sporting and recreational facilities that have helped produce some of the country’s best athletes,” Museum Manager Luke Grealy said. “Another important story the Hall of Fame tells, is of a community of selfless dedicated parents and volunteers, from coaches to fundraisers, who encourage and nurture these champions. “The Sporting Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to recognise the outstanding achievement of those athletes, and following this revamp their success is on show to inspire the next generation.” The new-look Hall of Fame features objects from the Warren Smith collection and gives more recognition to Wagga’s female sporting legends. The Sporting Hall of Fame is located at the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site on Lord Baden Powell Drive. It is open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday and 10am to 2pm on Sundays. • For more information, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/museum.

Time to nominate top Aussies Do you know a dead set legend? Don’t keep it a secret – make sure they get official legend status by nominating them for the City of Wagga Wagga’s 2017 Australia Day Awards. If your mate is an absolute champion, just a few words on the back of a postcard is enough to get the nomination ball rolling. “The postcards were introduced last year and proved a great way to nominate the unsung heroes
in our community,” Australia Day Committee Chair Graham Cotter said. “All it takes is a brief description of why the nominee deserves legend status and then you can drop it in or send it to the Civic Centre. “We’ll then contact you to complete the full nomination process if it fits within the awards criteria.” Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards can be made for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (27 years and younger), Walk
of Honour Award and the Ted Ryder Sports Memorial Award for contribution to administration in sport. “Wagga is a great place to live, work and play and our community is full of unsung heroes,” Mr Cotter said. “Whether they’re a tireless community advocate or longserving volunteer, they all deserve legend status. “Community groups and residents are encouraged to step up and nominate our everyday champions who have given selflessly to the

No late applications will be considered. Applicants will be notified of the results of their application by Monday 12 September. For more information and how to apply, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ fusion.

ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PRODUCE?

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
A quote I enjoy, quite often attributed to Otto von Bismarck, is “laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made”. And so another four-year term of Council draws to
a close and it has most certainly been a very interesting four years. I feel that there is an enormous need for a set of new eyes and ideas, but above all enthusiasm, required to assist Council in climbing to the next level. It is important that new people looking to run for Council understand what they can and cannot do. The role of a Councillor
is enshrined in the Local Government Act and predominately places the strategic direction of Council as the primary focus of the elected official. Controlling day to day operations fall under the direction of the General Manager. So over the next few weeks there will be many candidates promising to do certain things. Most things
councillor.mclaren@wagga.nsw.gov.au
will not be achieved as they simply are not strategic issues that Councillors can control. Other issues are squarely in the sphere of the State and Federal Governments. My advice to perspective Councillors is to focus on issues that you can control. Focus on issues that actually matter to most people. Commit to keeping rate rises to a minimum.
Invest in our decaying road network. The best thing the City of Wagga Wagga can do to help Wagga Wagga is to stay out of the headlines. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing day in day out expecting different results. If the Wagga Wagga community really want to challenge the status quo of the existing Council, I would
suggest that you consider voting for a more diverse group of Councillors. Study the voting system and vote for the people that are actually talking about issues that they can influence, rather than just trying to gain attention or likes on their Facebook page.

Sixty volunteers braved the muddy conditions and helped plant more than 1400 seedlings as part of National Tree Day on 31 July. The community planting at East Bomen Road saw volunteers grab their gardening gloves and gumboots

Are you an artist in the Riverina region? Would you like to have an exhibition in the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery? Proposals are now being sought from Riverina-based artists and organisations who wish to exhibit in 2017-18 in the gallery’s two community spaces, the Links Gallery and the E3 art space. The Links Gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to established artists from Wagga Wagga and the Riverina region, located within the Main Gallery of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. Eight exhibitions are available between May 2017 and July 2018, for six to seven weeks each, including installation and packing up. The E3 art space is also run through the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, but as a separate space that the artist will be responsible for. This exhibition space is designed to offer emerging artists and recent graduates from the Riverina
region the opportunity to exhibit and develop their skills in a regional gallery. Artists can choose to have an exhibition for two weeks or longer, at any time between May 2017 and July 2018. Application forms and proposal guidelines for both the Links Gallery and the E3 art space are now available at the gallery or online at wagga.nsw. gov.au/gallery.
