IGNITE YOUR SENSES AT RIVERINA SCIENCE FESTIVAL
The line-up of events to celebrate this year’s Riverina Science Festival is set to ignite, and excite, all the senses. Get hands-on and a little bit messy in the Kitchen Science Storytime sessions or gaze through a high-powered telescope to discover the stars above. Listen to some music and learn the science behind the sounds or tantalise
your tastebuds, and learn about the food we eat from a real-life scientist at Supermarket Botany sessions. Whether you’re a budding scientist or just have a curious mind, the festival, which coincides with National Science Week 2016, has something for all ages and interests. Story continued inside
FUN IN FOCUS: Wagga Wagga City Library Program Officers Jeannie Hazell and Michael Scutti get up close and personal with science ahead of the Riverina Science Festival. The festival, which coincides with National Science Week 2016, starts today and runs until Sunday 21 August.
Free Tip Day on 20 August The City of Wagga Wagga’s next Free Tip Day is Saturday 20 August – just in time to start your spring cleaning. Mark the date in your calendar and bring your household rubbish, garden waste and mixed recyclables down to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) from
7am to 4.30pm. “With spring just around the corner, this Free Tip Day is a great opportunity to clean out your shed or garage and clean up around the house,” Manager Waste and Stormwater Services Geoff Veneris said. “Free Tip Days complement the City of Wagga Wagga’s normal service, which includes more materials that can be disposed of for free every day due to increased recycling capability at GWMC.”
We’re now on Facebook!
Televisions, computers and computer equipment can be disposed of for free, not just on Free Tip Day, but every day that the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre is open. This offer is available to householders and small businesses only. “You can also dispose of polystyrene for free all year round at GWMC,” Mr Veneris said. “Council can reprocess it on-site for reuse into a range of recycled products.”
Special wastes such as tyres, builders waste, refrigerative items, mattresses and gas bottles are not included in the free disposal day and will be charged as per normal fees and charges. Free disposal is limited to cars, vans, utes and single axle trailers only. For more information and a full list of fees and charges, visit Council’s website wagga. nsw.gov.au or phone 1300 292 442.

Riverina Science Festival to ignite your senses From front page “When you think about it, science is everywhere, from the oxygen we breathe, to the homes we live in, the devices we use daily, and even our very existence and DNA is due to the wonder of science,” Riverina Science Hub convener Christine Bolton said. “There is so much that can be contributed to science and technology, and no matter our age, there is always something new to learn about, and from, science.” This year is the third anniversary of the Riverina Science Festival and each year it is getting bigger and better. “The festival is already
creating quite a buzz, with a number of our Council colleagues joining in the fun, we also have some really great local and visiting scientists and science educators on board,” Manager Library Services Claire Campbell said. Charles Sturt University microscopist John Harper, Dave Burraston from WIRED lab and Michael Maher from the Wagga Wagga Observatory are some of the local experts who will share their knowledge during the festival. Events will be held at a range of venues across the city, including the Wagga Wagga City Library, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Museum

CALLING ALL PROJECTION ARTISTS The City of Wagga Wagga is seeking expressions of interest from leading Australian projection artists for a two-week residency as part of its NightLights program. Wagga Wagga is home to stateof-the-art projectors and the Civic Centre building serves as a 50x8m canvas. The successful artist will be commissioned to deliver a site specific work to be presented in June 2017, as well as lead a fiveday master class program for local
emerging artists. The intensive master class in digital media and projection art will include up to 10 emerging artists and will be conducted for five days between 18 April and 7 May 2017. This will be the third NightLights master class following successful programs by Craig Walsh (2015) and Yandell Walton (2016). Expressions of interest close on 7 September. Families enjoy the wonder of reading with new program There is never a time too early, or late, in a child’s life to start reading and exploring the wonder of books. Babies Love Books is an early childhood program which promotes the benefits of reading to children and teaching children to read. The special program was launched at the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital on Wednesday, with some of Wagga’s cutest new residents and their parents joining in the celebrations. Every baby born at the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital will receive a special Babies Love Books library bag, complete with a voucher for a free board book to redeem when they visit Wagga Wagga City Library, and information on a variety of services available for new parents. Wagga Wagga City Library Manager Claire Campbell said the years 0-3 were critical years for establishing pathways for literacy and reading. “The Babies Love Books program places a free book in the hands of new mums and dads to read at home. They can also borrow 50 books at a time from the library,” Mrs Campbell said. Wagga Wagga City Library has an extensive range of books for babies and parents, as well as entertaining early literacy activities and programs and e-library resources for young families. Wagga Wagga Speech Pathologist Rachael Lawrence said learning to, and knowing how to read was one of basic building blocks for life. “Books help build a child’s imagination, thinking, talking and listening skills. Children also get to explore colours, shapes and patterns in books, have fun pointing and patting pages, learn to turn pages and listen to sounds and rhythms of words,” Ms Lawrence said. With society’s obsession with screens, early
