Weekly information from us to you SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT: Cultural Officer Tracie Miller and Councillor Kevin Poynter check out the new public artwork in the Riverside precinct.

Crows come to land at Riverside Some not-so-feathery friends have found a nest along the city’s levee bank this week. Six metallic boulders with coppery crow cut-outs have been installed in the Riverside precinct, adjacent to the St Michael’s oval. Councillor Kevin Poynter, who sits on the Public Art Advisory Panel with other community and industry representatives, said it was great to see the Waggaworks public art plan connecting with the Riverside Master Plan. “The Riverside Master Plan is a really important project for our community to link us with the river in ways we haven’t been linked in a very, very long time,” he said. “That’s going to bring people and that’s where public art should be. FUNNY TIMES AHEAD

A gaggle of giggles will be heard across the city this month when the Wagga Comedy Fest brings a mixture of big guns and upand-comers to town.

Headlining the inaugural festival with Civic Theatre shows are established acts Anh Do, the Doug Anthony Allstars and Fiona O’Loughlin. The festival is also stretching out to the Wagga Art Gallery E3 Art Space for the anxiety and antics of Luke McGregor and Sparrow Folk respectively. Meanwhile, the Museum of the

Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers will feature a comedy writing workshop and some improvised theatre mayhem. “Tickets are all selling really well for our big acts,” Civic Theatre Manager and Wagga Comedy Fest organiser Carissa Campbell said. “We’ve also been lucky to secure great performers like Luke McGregor and Sparrowfolk to perform in the E3 Art Space. “A lot of thought has gone into reconfiguring the room from exhibition space to a room of laughs.” McGregor is a comedian on the rise and is a regular guest on The Project. His award-winning show I Worry That I Worry Too Much explores his OCD, life’s fear, failures and awkwardness.

Sparrow Folk are not as well known, but this deceivingly sweet pair are jaw-droppingly naughty. Their hysterical songs divulge the daring and delightful underbelly of suburban life and you’ll be left in stiches. Ms Campbell said the comedy workshops and Impro events will add another dimension to what is going to be a funny few days in Wagga. “Professional comedian Anne Edmonds will be teaching us how to write jokes, tell funny stories, develop sketches and the participants will have a laugh in the process,” she said. “The Class Clowns Comedy Crash Course workshop comes out of the Melbourne International Comedy

Festival and is aimed at people aged 15 years and above. “There will also be more local comedy with three big nights of Impro – The Wagga Way where funny folk will step up and play theatre games in the same vein as Whose Line is it Anyway? and Thank God You’re Here. “Well-known improvised theatre gurus Impro ACT will be in control of the out-of-control mayhem and you should bring the kids to see them go through their paces at a special comedy event on the Saturday.” The Wagga Comedy Fest kicks off on Tuesday 16 June and runs until Saturday 20 June. Crows come to land at Riverside Continued from page 1 “The selection process was pretty extensive. “We had the artists coming down to look at the space and talk to the managers for the whole (Riverside) project and to put forward ideas that the panel went through. “We looked at them in terms of how they sat within the space, how they assisted with connecting our community with our river, connecting our community with our environment and connecting our community with our culture.” Southern Highlands-based artist Jane Cavanough designed the series of boulders of different sizes, taking into consideration the risk of

flood in the area. Cr Poynter said along with being cleverly designed, the crow boulders were symbolic of Wagga and the Riverside area. “They’re just beautiful objects to start with,” he said. “When you look at them they’re delightful. “The crows link us with the name of our town and with the symbol of our town. “The rock component links us with the rocks around the river and the river landscape and the etchings of the water on the rocks links with the river as well.” Cavanough worked with local contractors to realise the Riverside public art project.

Thanks to our anti-litter legends Hey legend! Wagga Wagga City Council wishes to thank all the residents and businesses who have supported the “Hey Tosser!” litter campaign over the past nine months. Council received $26,000 in funding from the NSW EPA to roll out the campaign, which educated residents that littering from a vehicle is an offence and can result in fines averaging $200.It also focused on teaching the community about the

different avenues available to report a littering offence. Since March 1 this year, 11 fines have been issued in Wagga Wagga as a result of reports of littering from a vehicle by residents. “Sadly, litter is still a big issue in our region and if doing the right thing wasn’t reason enough not to litter, then perhaps the chance of a fine is,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said. “Now that reports can be made by

anyone in the community, litterers should know there are now many more eyes on the road. “Litter in the environment poses a threat to the health and safety of people and animals. It also detracts from the beauty of our city and surrounding countryside.” Residents can report sightings of litter from vehicles to the EPA on 131 555, www.epa.nsw.gov.au or the Report to EPA phone app.

BRAND NEW: The first stage of the Chambers Park upgrade is complete with Works and Playground Officer John Conlan (pictured) putting the finishing touches on the community’s new playground. This project was completed as part of Council’s annual playground replacement program, with the design developed in consultation with the community and at a total project cost of $100,000. A skate park will also be developed for Chambers Park, as well as the installation of new furniture later in the year.

Litter fines average $200. Don’t be a tosser, take your rubbish with you.

Councillor Column

councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au

I’d like to start this column by acknowledging the commitment that Council employees have to this community. In my experience I have found that employees act in a courteous and professional manner no matter the circumstances in which they find themselves. No person or organisation is exempt from failing and wrongdoing. It’s how we as a community react and learn from failure that is important. It seems that some sectors in modern society have determined that in government, failure is frowned upon. There are a range of people, media and various organisations, and even elected members who are sweating on failure and are ready to pounce and point out any such failures. Unfortunately too often we see that those who pounce on the failures don’t acknowledge the successes. If we are to criticise failures we must celebrate the successes. Not to do both is unfair and will lead to a biased opinion of the value the community gains from its Council employees. Very few people work day to day in an organisation that is scrutinised at the level of local government. It is not unusual for Council or Council-related activities or work to dominate the local news content. How many other community members have their work and workplace subjected to this level of scrutiny? The answer is none. Not only that, the employees get no direct right of reply to any article or news item about them. I know that employees of Council are rightfully proud of the work they do and they also feel an immense level of responsibility and accountability for the work they undertake. I am told regularly by members of the public of the great work undertaken by Council employees and know that not enough public recognition is given to their work in our community, and therefore I would now like to express my personal thanks and appreciation to you all. Thank you.

Mayor Rod Kendall

‘Arthur’ immortalised on Baylis Street Henry “Arthur” Nixon was immortalised in Wagga Wagga’s Walk of Honour recently. The community stalwart was announced as the latest inductee at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony earlier in the year. He was surrounded by family as the plaque was officially unveiled at a special ceremony on 22 May. “Arthur” served in World War II in both PNG and Borneo and often speaks with young recruits in training at Kapooka. He has served 10 years on the TAFE Board and has worked in various service and community clubs, including Apex and high school P&C.

Mr Nixon has been a member of Rotary for 40 years and has obtained a Paul Harris Fellow. During his time with Rotary he has been involved with many community projects. He was a member of the Wagga Base Hospital board for 10 years, is a member of the Probus Club (and has been a previous president) and has been an active legacy member. Mr Nixon worked for family business, Nixon Engineering, which has been operating in Wagga Wagga since 1960. “Arthur’s” plaque is located outside the Baylis Street entrance of the Marketplace.
