SHADE SAILS TAKE LMC TO NEXT LEVEL New shade sails recently installed at Wagga Wagga City Council’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) have taken one of the best selling facilities in Australia to the next level. LMC manager Paul Martin said the roll-out of the first stage of the retractable shade sails provided significant and improved conditions over part of the new and existing sheepyards at the loading gates. “This project is part of the sheepyard capability upgrade which provided us with the opportunity to install shade sails to the new and existing infrastructure,” Mr Martin said. “It was also an opportunity to prove the concept of what we’re trying to achieve by providing shade sails while still allowing sunlight into the facility which provides necessary ultra-violet disinfection towards maintaining a

healthy environment, and also provides comfort for the animals while they’re here. “When the weather cools down and we want more sunlight it’s quite an easy job to retract the sails as required. We’ve worked closely with industry stakeholders, in particular the Wagga Selling Agents Association, and when the upgrade is complete our operation will be setting a new benchmark for selling facilities across the country to follow.” Steel work and concreting to the sheepyards extension, installation of overhead waterlines and a new service road are almost complete. The project is due for completion before the end of March 2021. Work on the cattle fan draft upgrade at LMC is also progressing. It is due for completion next week.

Let's keep in touch: Council keen for talks The Junior State Cup Southern Conference (JSC) touch titles in Wagga Wagga last weekend were another success and great boost for the city’s hopes of securing the event in the future.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s three-year contract with NSW Touch

Association for the JSC carnival ended on a high as negotiations for the next phase of the titles are planned. Council Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said Council would aim to sit down with NSWTA in coming weeks to review the success of the past three years and outline plans for the future. “We want that debrief with NSW Touch as soon as practicable,” Mr Cook said. “It’s a great event for the city and I strongly believe we have proven our ability over the past three years to successfully host the carnival. “We had to adapt this year to meet

COVID restrictions but we worked closely with NSW Touch and the Wagga Touch Association to make it happen and the reports we received from visiting clubs were all positive. “Ultimately we want to see NSW Touch back in Wagga Wagga with this carnival next year. “It has the potential to attract up to 10,000 people at its peak which is a huge economic benefit to the city and towns across the region.” NSWTA General Manager Dean Russell said a complete review of the JSC Southern and Northern carnivals would be required now that COVID restrictions were likely to influence the format of future carnivals.

Focus on creating equitable and supportive workplaces Respect and valuing diversity were among the themes highlighted during discussions at a We Do Respect, Do You? event in Wagga Wagga on Tuesday 2 March. Held at the Civic Theatre, the forum was hosted by the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber and supported by Wagga Wagga City Council, in the lead up to NSW Women’s Week, focusing on respectful work environments. It was attended by business leaders and NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women the Hon Bronwyn Taylor MLC and Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke MP. In her welcome speech, Director Community Janice Summerhayes said everyone in the community has a role to play in creating an inclusive and respectful Wagga Wagga for all. “Take some time today to reflect on what you can do in the community, in the workplace and in your homes to safely speak up and challenge casual sexism,

gender stereotypes and acts of disrespect, as a respectful and kind community benefits everyone’s wellbeing,” Ms Summerhayes said. The minister spoke about how effective communication and mutual respect enables a conversation to move forward, using the example of navigating differing views in the workplace. “If we talk openly and really listen to what other people have to say then it’s possible to talk about important, challenging topics and reach a workable agreement,” Mrs Taylor said. “It’s never a great outcome when it’s just government involved; change requires the whole community to be involved.” Steph Cooke spoke about her work as a member of the Joint Select Committee working on a comprehensive definition of coercive control, creating strong legislation and a framework of delivery. NSW Women’s Week runs from 8-14 March and coincides with International Women’s Day on Monday (8 March).

‘Fresh’ take on one of city’s favourite cultural events

The FRESH program creatively combines Seniors Festival and Youth Week celebrations into a month-long program of talks, workshops and events for people of all ages and walks-of-life in Wagga Wagga. In April 2021, there will be even more ways to explore and experience this fun, diverse and engaging program, presented by Wagga Wagga City Council. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said Wagga Wagga is a diverse community and the concept behind

FRESH is to bring people of different ages, backgrounds and cultures together. “Whether you’re young or old(er), this year’s FRESH program has something for everyone – with a series of special events tailor-made for young people, families and older members of our community,” Ms Summerhayes said. “The program is bursting with highlights ranging from a mix of headline events and live music to cross-cultural dance workshops, ancient and contemporary art

forms and more, by local businesses, community groups and artists. “The mix of Seniors Festival and Youth Week brings millennials, Gen Y, Gen X, baby boomer and silent generation audiences together to exchange ideas, learn new skills, in order to gain new perspectives and insights into the way they see the world.” More than 2500 people of all ages and backgrounds took part in FRESH 2019, with the broad variety of activities and focus on inclusion part of its success. In March 2020, Council made the difficult decision to cancel the FRESH program due to the evolving COVID-19 situation and NSW Public Health Order directions. “This year Council has focussed on putting health and safety measures in place to ensure that talks, workshops and events are safe,” Ms Summerhayes said. “As a result, there is

The secret’s out: novel chosen for One Book One Wagga 2021

Wagga Wagga City Library has chosen Rosalie Ham’s The Dressmaker’s Secret as this year’s selection for One Book One Wagga, the city’s largest book club. One Book One Wagga sees hundreds of locals read the same Australian novel over three months, then gather for a gala dinner with the book’s author in May. The Dressmaker’s Secret is the sequel to Rosalie Ham’s first published novel The Dressmaker, which became a bestseller in 2000, and was adapted into a popular film in 2015. Previous One Book One Wagga writers include Charlotte Wood (The Weekend, 2020), Chris Hammer (Scrublands, 2019), Michelle de Kretser (The Life to Come, 2018) and Liane Moriarty (Truly Madly Guilty, 2017). Manager Library Services

Claire Campbell said the library team who select each year’s novel have a knack for picking successful titles. “Many of the books chosen for One Book One Wagga have gone on to become bestsellers after selection, and several have won major awards,” Ms Campbell said. “Over the eight years we’ve held One Book One Wagga our city has built a reputation for enthusiastic readership and hospitality. Past authors have all commented on how much they’ve enjoyed coming here, and what a privilege it is to attend a gala dinner in their honour. “For book lovers, it’s always an exciting opportunity to meet a leading Australian author.” The One Book One Wagga Gala Dinner will feature The Dressmaker’s Secret author Rosalie Ham in conversation with the Riverina Regional

Library’s Amy Heap. Tickets are available from the Civic Theatre from Monday 8 March 2021. In the lead-up to the gala dinner, the library is partnering with Forum 6 Cinemas for a special COVID-safe screening of the 2015 film adaptation of The Dressmaker on Sunday 14 March at 2:30pm. Wagga Wagga City Council is encouraging parents, grandparents, and carers to take advantage of free child car seat safety checks this month. Research shows two out of three child restraints are not being used correctly. Council, in partnership with Transport for NSW, has teamed up with authorised child restraint fitter, Cotmakers. “This is a great opportunity for parents, expectant parents, carers, and grandparents to have their child seat professionally checked,”

Council’s Road Safety Officer Emma Reynolds said. “Some seats are being shared from one car to another and because of this they become loose. Proper use of car safety seats helps keep children safe.” The child restraint checking day is on Wednesday 10 March from 9am to noon, at the Wagga Wagga Beach car park. Places are limited and bookings are essential. For more information or to book, please contact reynolds. emma@wagga.nsw.gov.au or 6923 9544.

Community safety: last week to have your say

Wagga Wagga City Council staff are encouraging the community to share their thoughts about safety and crime in the final week of the 2021 Community Safety Perception Survey. Council recently issued the anonymous 10-minute survey to gain a better understanding of community perceptions of safety and crime in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. Social Planner Lisa Saffery said the response to the survey had been excellent, and she was hoping more residents would take the opportunity to share their thoughts before the survey closes on 12 March. “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and their neighbourhood,” Ms Saffery said. “Take a moment to share your thoughts

and concerns with us – we want to know where you feel safe, where you feel unsafe, and why. “Your feedback will help Council identify priorities for the updated Community Safety Action Plan 2025. “We’ll be working in partnership with police and community partners to map out practical improvements that Council and other agencies and stakeholders can make to help increase community safety and prevent crime, where possible.” The updated Community Safety Action Plan 2025 will be available for public feedback later in 2021. To complete the 2021 Community Safety Perception Survey, visit connect.wagga.nsw. gov.au/safety The survey is open until 5pm, 12 March 2021.

Survey to gauge DFV attitudes The community’s perceptions on domestic and family violence (DFV) and how attitudes in Wagga Wagga have changed in the past five years are being collected in a new survey which opened this week. Wagga Wagga City Council, in partnership with the Wagga Women’s Health Centre (WWHC), has delivered theDVproject:2650, which is now nearing the end of its third year. The project was funded for delivery in Wagga Wagga after a 2016 survey conducted by the WWHC found that many community members held low support for gender equality, adhered to rigid or stereotypical gender roles, and held attitudes and beliefs that justify, excuse, trivialise or minimise DFV. As a result of the 2016 findings, funding was secured for theDVproject:2650, a three-year primary prevention program, which has also delivered several projects highlighting the importance of respect and equity to the local community. The second survey will be open to the public through March and April and aims to measure if the community’s perceptions on DFV have changed in the past five years. Council’s Equity Project Manager Maryna Bilousova said it is important as many people as possible complete the survey to help in gaining a deeper understanding of the community’s current attitudes and perceptions of DFV, and primary prevention approaches.
