SAFETY FIRST: Kooringal Public School students Jack Lawrence and Poppy Bolton, both 6, and Acting Principal Diana McGregor use the new designated pedestrian crossing in Cooinbil Crescent, which was funded through the NSW Government's $5M Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure Around Schools program.

Safety boost for local schools The kids at Kooringal Public School have a safer walk to and from school after the installation of new pedestrian safety measures near their school. New pedestrian ramps, signage and line marking at the Cooinbil Crescent access greeted students when they returned from

school holidays last week. Kooringal Public School Acting Principal Diana McGregor said the safety measures were much-needed additions. “The school community is extremely pleased that the crossing is now in place,” she said. “The safety of the large number of students and parents that enter and exit the school from the Cooinbil Crescent gate has always been a concern. “Having a clearly marked crossing

heightens the awareness of motorists and gives pedestrians a designated area to cross, increasing the safety and wellbeing of everyone.” The Cooinbil Crescent works were one of two pedestrian safety projects undertaken during the April school holidays, the other in Plunkett Drive, near Mater Dei Catholic College. Both projects were funded through the NSW Government’s $5M Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure Around Schools program. Under the program, the City of Wagga

Wagga will also carry out improvement projects next financial year at Wagga Wagga High School by installing a fence along Coleman Street (between Edmondson and Macleay streets) and Kooringal High School by installing a pedestrian refuge island (at intersection of Fay and Ziegler avenues). Separate to this funding program, the City also improved pedestrian safety at North Wagga Public School earlier this year by installing a dish drain and fencing, undertaking road maintenance and installing signage.
