Weekly information from us to you
SAFETY FIRST: Kooringal Public School students Jack Lawrence and Poppy Bolton, both 6, and Acting Principal Diana McGregor use the new designated pedestrian crossing in Cooinbil Crescent, which was funded through the NSW Government's $5M Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure Around Schools program.
Safety boost for local schools The kids at Kooringal Public School have a safer walk to and from school after the installation of new pedestrian safety measures near their school. New pedestrian ramps, signage and line marking at the Cooinbil Crescent access greeted students when they returned from
school holidays last week. Kooringal Public School Acting Principal Diana McGregor said the safety measures were much-needed additions. “The school community is extremely pleased that the crossing is now in place,” she said. “The safety of the large number of students and parents that enter and exit the school from the Cooinbil Crescent gate has always been a concern. “Having a clearly marked crossing

heightens the awareness of motorists and gives pedestrians a designated area to cross, increasing the safety and wellbeing of everyone.” The Cooinbil Crescent works were one of two pedestrian safety projects undertaken during the April school holidays, the other in Plunkett Drive, near Mater Dei Catholic College. Both projects were funded through the NSW Government’s $5M Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure Around Schools program. Under the program, the City of Wagga
Wagga will also carry out improvement projects next financial year at Wagga Wagga High School by installing a fence along Coleman Street (between Edmondson and Macleay streets) and Kooringal High School by installing a pedestrian refuge island (at intersection of Fay and Ziegler avenues). Separate to this funding program, the City also improved pedestrian safety at North Wagga Public School earlier this year by installing a dish drain and fencing, undertaking road maintenance and installing signage.

Every child is a star at Family Day Care There was plenty of laughter, colour and playing at the Botanic Gardens playsession hall this week for an open day showcasing what Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) has to offer. Manager Family Day Care, Kym Stewart, said more than 250 local children attend Family Day Care every week and they are always welcoming new children and Educators. “This week is a celebration of the unique education and care Family Day Care provides through small groups in the home of a registered and qualified Educator. “Children receive individual personalised care and develop longlasting relationships with their Educator, but also get the benefits of playing with lots of kids in our group play sessions,” she said. There are 42 registered Educators in the region
with long-serving Educators recognised at a special morning tea. “Some of our educators have being doing this job for a quarter of a century but all receive regular training and are constantly updating their skills,” Mrs Stewart said. “We’re also very lucky to have a number of fresh faces joining the ranks with plenty of interest in this type of care from dedicated Educators.” Antoinette Balding said she decided to become an Educator because she knew it would be a job she could be passionate about. “I really love the small groups and individual learning so you get major one-on-one time with the children,” she said. “And the Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care office is so supportive with their encouragement and guidance.” Call 1300 292 442 for FUN: (From left) Scarlett, 4, Jake, 3, Educator Yvonne McAlister, Claudia, 2, and Tilly, 5, dressed up for the theme of National Family more information. The City of Wagga Wagga is currently reviewing the Public Art Plan for the next four years and we need your help to ensure it will continue to develop Wagga Wagga as a thriving, innovative, connected and inclusive regional centre. Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes says Wagga Wagga has long been a cultural and creative city. “It has been 20 years since Council first endorsed a public art policy and public art is one of the key ingredients in fostering culture and creativity that engages and involves the whole community,” she said. “Whether it’s sculptural, performance, digital projections or murals; public art reflects our city’s identity, creates talking points, beautifies areas and can even be functional.
“It’s vital that we hear from the community to make sure this plan continues to reflect the needs and identity of the city as best we can.” The plan will outline the key principles and strategies for enhancing the city’s public spaces and meeting the cultural needs of the community over the next four years. You can contribute to the plan by registering to the Your Say Wagga website and filling out the People’s Panel survey or by calling 1300 292 442. Once this plan has been reviewed and community feedback considered, the plan along with the reviewed public art policy will go to the June Ordinary Council meeting for consideration. wagga.nsw.gov.au/ peoplespanel

Practice makes perfect: Mock emergency a success Had you not have known it was a training exercise, you would be forgiven for thinking you were watching a real disaster unfold. Passengers became patients at Wagga Wagga Airport at the weekend during a staged emergency training exercise. Smoke and an orange flare signalled an ‘explosion’ between a passenger plane and an RAAF aircraft. Shortly after, patients (acted out by volunteer
community members), spill out onto the tarmac. They are dazed, confused, some screaming, others gasping for air overcome by smoke inhalation. On closer inspection, wounds can be seen, bumps to the head, bruises, burns, broken bones protruding from the lower arm. Minutes passed and emergency services arrive on the scene. They hurriedly equip themselves
with gas tanks, helmets, gloves, masks. Emergency personnel can be seen stretching people away, others assessing the wounded and jotting down names and personal details. Patients, who were previously strangers, sit on the ground sideby-side comforting one another. The mock mayhem lasted for about one hour.

CIT Y’S EMERGENC Y PREPAREDNE S S PU T TO T HE T E S T
A simulated disaster staged at Wagga Wagga Airport at the weekend showed the City is well equipped in the event of a real emergency, Airport Manager Leon Burger said. Mr Burger said he was more than impressed with what he witnessed from all parties involved in the weekend's exercise. “Firstly, a huge thank you goes to all the volunteers, emergency services and everyone that has worked extremely hard behind the scenes to bring this exercise together,” he said. “These kinds of training exercises are vitally important as they test our emergency plans, preparedness and responsiveness in the case of a real emergency. “The weekend’s exercise showed that we have the necessary emergency response resources within our community to respond to any level of incident at our airport, and that the people manning those emergency combat agencies are
highly trained professionals.” Mr Burger also commented on how well all response agencies worked together during the exercise saying the community should feel comfortable that professional help is readily available. Debriefing after the exercise, Mr Burger said some changes were also required. “Although assessed to be adequate, aspects that we believe can be improved on include the airport’s own emergency response resources, and the establishment and transfer of command and control functions. Both these elements will be addressed and practiced during forthcoming training and desktop exercises.” The emergency exercise is a requirement by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and was carried out in partnership between the City of Wagga Wagga and the RAAF Base Wagga Wagga, and supported by local and state emergency services.

Tidy up those autumn leaves at Free Tip Day on Sunday 14 May Is your shed in a shambles? Or maybe the autumn leaves are starting to pile up? If it’s time for a clean-up at your place, then make sure the next Free Tip Day on Sunday 14 May is marked on your calendar. There will be no charge to dispose of household rubbish, garden waste and mixed recyclables at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) on the day from 7am to 4.30pm. “Free Tip Day is a great opportunity to rake

The NSW Government is introducing the Fire and Emergency Services Levy (FESL) for all properties from 1 July 2017. This will replace the current funding model for fire and emergency services, which is raised by a levy on insurance. The FESL will appear as an additional charge on your rates notice from July or a separate notice for non-rateable properties, but is not a Council charge. You may pay the FESL annually or quarterly. The FESL paid will, in part, depend on your property’s classification as residential, farmland, industrial, commercial or public benefit, and whether or not the land is vacant. If you disagree with your property’s classification, you can request a review by contacting the City of Wagga Wagga on 1300 292 442 or email council@wagga.nsw. gov.au For further information visit fesl. nsw.gov.au or phone the FESL information line on 1300 78 78 72.
