BIDGEE BOOST: Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire announce $5M of NSW Government funding for Stage 2 of the Riverside project.
Wagga’s waterfront wonder The transformation of the Murrumbidgee River waterfront at Wagga Beach will get underway later this year following a $5M funding announcement by the NSW Government.
Growth Environmental and Tourism Fund, Wagga Wagga City Council will contribute $1.7M. “This funding for Stage 2 will see large spaces created that can cater for festivals, markets and other events, as well as infrastructure for pop-up shops so visitors to the beach can grab a coffee or some fish and chips and enjoy the river,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Conkey OAM said. “Stage 2 will also include a refurbished Stage 2 of the Riverside project will see parking area, a playground with some water the entire precinct from the beach carpark play components, additional amenities, through to St Michael’s Oval rejuvenated, building on the success of the Stage 1 works further improvements to the paths, as well as more barbecue shelters and picnic furniture. completed in 2014-15. “The aim of the Riverside project is to Along with $5M from the state’s Regional reactivate the Wagga Beach precinct and

develop the area as a focal point and destination for residents and visitors, as well as create linkages to the city’s CBD and existing civic precinct.” The Riverside project is estimated to boost yearly visitor numbers to Wagga Wagga by 10 per cent to 1.42M and increase the time they spend in the region, which will inject an additional $79M into the local economy each year. “This much-needed funding will extend our use of the riverside precinct for both locals and tourists,” Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire said. “Stage 1 saw the redevelopment of our beloved Wagga Beach, Stage 2 will create more space for large scale community events like food and wine festivals, markets,
musical performances and much more. “This announcement will give Council the best opportunity to make the river a mustsee spot for anyone thinking of travelling to Wagga.” The Riverside Strategic Master plan was developed in 2009 after extensive consultation with the community of Wagga Wagga. The Stage 2 works will start later this year and will be done in sections, starting with the St Michael’s Oval and car park before moving to the beach in early 2019 and then the caravan park area in October 2019. The project is due to be completed by mid-2020.

New service underway It was all systems go for FOGO on Monday with the start of the new kerbside waste service. The first truckloads have arrived at the FOGO (food organics and garden organics) processor on Tuesday and the loads had low contamination rates.
Your green-lid FOGO bin can take all your food scraps, paper towel and some cardboard, while all other recyclable items go into your yellow-lid bin and general waste in your redlid bin. For help on what goes where, check out our A-Z guide at yourwaste.com.au.
HOW ARE OLD BINS BEING RECYCLED?
Bin wondering about how old bins are recycled? Kurrajong Recycling is currently shredding about a thousand bins each day. All three of the old bins – general waste, green waste and the blue recycling bins – are going through the same process where they are shredded, then sent off to be turned into plastic pellets that can be moulded into new plastic products. The steel axle of the old bins is also recycled. The wheels, which are a mixed material that can’t be recycled, are sent to landfill.
WHEN ARE YOUR OLD BINS BEING REMOVED?
Bin removal is scheduled to take until 20 April. Suburbs where removal is currently scheduled to take place: Lloyd, Glenfield Park, Springvale, Tatton, Bourkelands, Tolland, Mount Austin, Kooringal, Turvey Park, Wagga Wagga – Central, Ashmont and Moorong.

WHEN DO MY BINS GO OUT?
With a new contractor, garbage trucks may be operating at different times than you’re used to. Residents are reminded to put their bins out the night before if possible – make sure they are on the kerbside no later than 6am on your service day. As part of the new kerbside service, residents no longer put out all three bins at the same time. Each week the bins go out in pairs – the green-lid bin is emptied weekly and should be put on the kerbside with
either the yellow-lid or red-lid bin depending on your collection cycle. Check the sticker on the side of your bin to see what day your bins are collected and what cycle your yellow-lid and red-lid bins are emptied. You can also search for your address at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ onlineservices to find out when your bins are emptied. If your bins were missed, please call our customer service team on 1300 292 442.
YOUR NEW KERBSIDE WASTE SERVICE • 240L food organics and garden organics bin collected weekly • 240L recycling bin collected on the alternate fortnight to your general waste bin • 140L general waste bin collected on the alternate

Council has increased its financial support for the Skyworks New Year’s Eve event to $50,000 in 2018. Council has supported a New Year’s Eve event for the past five years to the value of $45,000 each year. After an expression of interest process, Thomas Bros. delivered the 2017 New Year’s
Eve event entitled Skyworks at Lake Albert. At the March meeting, Council voted to increase the funding amount to $50,000 for this year’s event, pending the funding commitment being place on public exhibition for 28 days. The funding is being considered outside the normal 2018/19
budget process as the Thomas Bros Group require significant lead time to organise the event. Council staff will also assist the event organiser with event facilitation, site preparation and event promotion, of which will form part of the event sponsorship agreement.

EASTER FUN: The Botanic Gardens was thriving over the Easter weekend as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
Dunns Road will be closed for grading works from Tuesday 10 April to Friday 20 April, weather permitting. The maintenance works will take place on weekdays between 7am to 5.30pm. The road will be reopened at the end of each day and local access will be maintained. In August 2017, Council resolved to engage an external engineer to develop a high level concept and
estimate for development required for Dunns Road. The engineering report will allow Council to make a determination on the future of the road from financial and strategic perspectives. The report will be presented to Council at a coming meeting, which will contain the investigations and initial stakeholder consultation.

OF THE
WEEK
BOTANIC GARDENS E ASTER FUN
Crowds enjoyed an eggcellent Easter at the Botanic Gardens, with both the Easter Family Fun Day and Picnic in the Park attracting thousands of people. On Easter Saturday, Zana Aerial Dance Academy thrilled crowds with their aerial displays and roving entertainers. Kids, and the young at heart, enjoyed a selection of amusement rides and works of art were created at the face painting stall. At Picnic in the Park on Easter Sunday, Allegro Ballet School performed beautiful dances and the String Family were popular
with many. “We have received very positive feedback from people who attended the Botanic Gardens over the Easter Weekend,” Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt said. “It was great to see locals and visitors enjoying all that the gardens has to offer, in particular as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens.” More than 3000 people visited the zoo over the weekend, and were able to meet the zoo’s
newest addition, a baby boy donkey. “It’s lovely that Wagga has gardens where people can come to relax, socialise and appreciate the simple things in life,” Wagga resident Vanessa Waterman said. “My mum visited over Easter and we enjoyed seeing the new donkey foal that was born recently.” As a part of the gardens’ 50th anniversary, more celebrations are planned for August and November. Visit www.wagga. nsw.gov.au/bg50 to stay up to date on the calendar of events.
HELP NAME OUR BABY DONKEY
The Botanic Garden’s Zoo needs your help to find a name for its newest addition, a baby boy donkey. Suggestions have been flowing in since he was born, with many people sticking to the Forrest Gump naming tradition as dad is named Forrest, mum is Jenny and older brother is Forrest Junior.
