Class acts & acrobats in Season 2020 With a little help from two Circus Oz superstars, the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre has officially launched its 2020 Subscription Season. Performers Tara Silcock and Adam Malone gave launch attendees an insight into what can be expected when Circus Oz: Aurora arrives in the city next year. A visit from the worldrenowned Australian circus is just one highlight of a diverse and high-quality 12-month program featuring local and international artists and catering to all tastes and ages. The new year will deliver a blend of traditional intheatre performances from some of Australia’s leading companies, such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Opera Australia. CROWD PLEASERS: Circus Oz performers Adam Malone and Tara Silcock kept the crowd entertained at the Civic Theatre’s Subscription Season launch earlier this week.

RiFL project next stage on track The next major step in the multi-million dollar development of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) hub at Wagga Wagga’s business park was taken this week towards the project’s design and construction.

quickly towards a scheduled start date of July 2020. Mr Kell said a successful tender process may see a contract awarded for the design and construction of RiFL in March next year. “Council has worked hard behind the scenes during the past 18 months in particular to secure funding for the project which promises to be a massive development for Wagga and the wider region,” Mr Kell said. “The scope of this project needs to be highlighted as potentially one of the most important developments in the city in recent Wagga City Council has advertised a decades. request for tenders in the process to engage “It is the impetus for kick-starting the a contractor to deliver works across the Special Activation Precinct at Bomen which scope of the $50M project. will provide 6000 jobs in the next 20 to 30 Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan years. Kell said the project will now start to move “RiFL is also a leverage for the Inland Rail

making Wagga a major inland port along Australia’s eastern seaboard.” Council recently secured $29.18M in State Government funding which will support two key initiatives to ensure the full potential of economic gains are realised at Bomen. These initiatives centre on the industrial estate’s enabling infrastructure, including civil works, utilities and roads, and also digital connectivity for new and existing businesses in the enterprise area. Mr Kell said the overall objective is to make Bomen a more attractive, efficient and affordable place to do business. “This sort of funding goes towards the infrastructure which will help Bomen deliver on its economic promise and will ultimately create new jobs which drives regional growth and productivity.” The latest funding followed a State

Government grant of $14.4M in August last year towards the construction of the RiFL rail siding. The announcement came just days after Visy Logistics was confirmed as a private partner in the freight hub development. Council will deliver the RiFL project and Visy will operate the terminal. Mr Kell said Council was aiming to have the hub operational by late 2021 or early 2022. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said it was pleasing to see the project moving forward on the back of significant funding. “Bomen will be the economic driver for this city for many decades. This is a great outcome for the city and to see the RiFL project getting closer to a start means we can look forward to another major project evolving in Wagga Wagga,” Cr Conkey said.

Advocating for improved river safety has been an area of strong interest for me over the last three years I have been on Council. Sadly, our community has experienced a number of fatal drownings over the years and community awareness is something I worry about when it comes to enjoying the amazing natural space we have. It’s been really rewarding to work with staff over this time and see the development of an inland water safety management plan for our local government area, the first of its kind

in the State, that Council adopted a few months ago. There are several recommendations in the plan that will, over time, see an improvement in signage, targeted community messaging campaigns and the installation of rescue equipment. One of the higher profile recommendations of the plan is the establishment of a “Bush Nippers” style swim and survive program for teaching kids how to enjoy swimming safely in a river environment. Kids have the opportunity to learn to swim safely in a pool environment through learn to swim classes or at the beach with Nippers but when

it comes to river safety we have nothing. I’m excited to say that as a result of the work we’ve done, Council will be partnering with a leading water safety agency to deliver an education program for river safety in the near future. As the weather warms up, you can do your bit too. Never swim alone, avoid alcohol around water, wear a lifejacket and learn life-saving skills. Find out more about what we’re doing to keep our water ways safe and how you can get involved at wagga.nsw. gov.au/riversafety

The $6.4M widening and upgrade of Wagga’s Farrer Road starts next week with traffic changes in place for drainage works before a complete road closure is required along sections to begin the main works. Stage 1 is scheduled to start on Thursday 12 December requiring the complete closure of Farrer Road between Boorooma Street and The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC). This section of road will remain closed until Friday 20 December, re-opening for the Christmas and New Year period, before closing again on 2 January until the first stage of works are completed on 31 January. During these dates Lindrum Way will be closed, however residents will have access to and from Boorooma via Messenger Avenue, with a temporary access road to be constructed for use during the staged closure. Access to TRAC from Farrer Road during Stage 1 works will be from the eastern end of Farrer Road, via Coolamon Road only,

with a single driveway access available during this period. Three more sectional closures from 3 February until 30 June, when the project is expected to be completed, will be required. Updates on these closures can be accessed at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ farrer-works Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said the Farrer Road widening and upgrade was an important project and a vital piece of infrastructure which is going to bring tremendous benefits to the community. “We need to close sections of road at various stages to complete the works but we have liaised closely with residents and other key stakeholders to minimise any traffic concerns in the area,” Mr Darby said. “We’re starting the first stage works in front of The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) as soon as school holidays start and expect to have that section finished in time for the start of the new school year.

“Then we’ll continue to move along Farrer Road in three more stages, towards the Coolamon Road, and we expect to be finished by the end of June next year.” Farrer Road provides essential access for residents living in the residential estate of Boorooma, and people accessing educational facilities at TRAC, TAFE and Charles Sturt University. Mr Darby said the road was identified for upgrade due to its rising traffic counts and strategic location servicing a growing residential area and educational institutions. The $6.4M project, being funded by Wagga City Council, will deliver a new 1.9km road with additional turning lanes outside TRAC and at Coolamon Road to improve traffic flow, he said. Works have been evident in the area in recent months with preliminary works and also the relocation of a gas main pipeline. Find updates at wagga.nsw.gov. au/farrer-works

As part of its 2019 festive season program, Council has unveiled a large scale, 3-star installation in the Civic Centre forecourt to enhance the Christmas experience for visitors and locals alike. Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton believes the attractive new installation has an important role to play in drawing people into the main street in the lead-up to Christmas. “These stars are designed to enable community members and visitors to interact with the installation by taking photographs, tagging their friends and sharing their pictures,” she said. The Christmas stars are designed to complement the beautifully lit Cyprus Pine across the road in the Victory Memorial Gardens and the five pedestrian crossings in Baylis Street between the Civic Centre and Edward Street. “Together, these activations, in close proximity to each other, further add to the vibrancy of the city… enhancing the community and visitor experience,” Ms Hamilton said. “We hope visitors will enjoy the ambience as they make the most of our city’s many dining and retail opportunities throughout December.” Council is not just relying on lighting to set the mood, tone and ambience this festive season, with a number of new activations to add to the city’s appeal. “We’ll have local musicians performing live music gigs in three locations along Baylis Street each Saturday between now and Christmas,” Ms Hamilton said.

“This is an opportunity to engage with our youth and give them a platform to share their talent with a wide audience.” Visitors and residents will also notice new triangular street guards, bin covers and barrier fencing in locations along Fitzmaurice and Baylis Street. “Another highlight for families will be the Christmas projection on the side of the Civic Centre,” Ms Hamilton said. “The projection will showcase a series of animated Christmas messages.” For more information on celebrating the festive season here in the city search ‘Wagga Christmas’ on the City of Wagga Wagga website.

Pathway upgrade to connect new Entwine Project

Wagga Wagga City Council is currently upgrading an existing pathway connecting the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of the Riverina as part of its $900,000 Entwine Project. Council is constructing a 152-metre concrete footpath linking the two well-loved community sites as part of its effort to connect, enhance and boost visitation to both iconic attractions. “The concrete footpath will replace the existing bush pathway

to reduce trip hazards and improve accessibility to make it easier for families with prams or people living with a disability to traverse between both sites,” Project Manager Thomas Lemerle said. “Upgrading the surface to concrete will also help protect the pathway from erosion and stormwater damage.” The existing pathway, which winds past the Botanic Garden’s Tree Chapel, will
