Language is often a barrier for people from different backgrounds, but a Wagga Wagga City Library program is bringing the community closer together through the power of conversation. There have been more than one thousand visits to the Language Café, which marks its first anniversary this week. Library Manager Claire Campbell said with Wagga Wagga being

both a Refugee Welcome City and resettlement area, there is a growing Cultural and Linguistic Diverse (CALD) community that now makes up six per cent of the city’s population. “The Wagga Wagga community has 99 language groups and through the Language Café we are assisting everyone from new arrivals to Australia and skilled migrants,” she said. Funding flows for Fusion festival The Fusion Multicultural Street Festival’s future is bright with Wagga Wagga City Council and Riverina Water committing a combined $75,000 to the major event each year for the next three years. Council adopted an ongoing budget commitment of $50,000 at the 25 June Meeting, while Riverina Water will provide $25,000 in sponsorship each year from

2018-20. “The Fusion Multicultural Festival is founded on a simple and successful philosophy that food, the creative and performing arts are a powerful means of engaging and uniting the whole community,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “It is about celebrating the mix of music, dance, food, culture and the creative arts that make our community unique and liveable. “The funding commitment from Wagga Wagga City Council and major sponsorship from Riverina Water County Council will allow Fusion to continue to grow and

be an annual highlight for residents and participants from right across the Riverina and the state.” Riverina Water County Council General Manager Andrew Crakanthorp said Council was pleased to be re-investing community funds into this major community event. “Riverina Water County Council has a role to play in strengthening the social fabric of the communities it provides water to,” he said. “The Board of Riverina Water have made it clear to management that they are keen to pursue opportunities that increase the use of Council supplied water. “We see this sponsorship as a major

element of the commitment by Council to raise its corporate profile and use customer revenue to re-invest in the future of the communities we serve.” The Wagga Wagga Local Government Area is home to community members from 112 different countries of origin, who speak 107 languages and practice 62 faiths. “Wagga Wagga was declared an official Refugee Welcome Zone in 2012, by the Refugee Council of Australia, cementing and enhancing our commitment to cultural and religious diversity,” Ms Summerhayes said. The 2018 Fusion Multicultural Festival will be held at the Victory Memorial Gardens on Saturday October 20.

Library celebrates first year of Language Cafe From front page “The first Language Café in July 2017 had 13 people from nine language backgrounds with five volunteers. Over the past year there have been 1038 visits and we now have 40 volunteers. “The participants have come from more than 30 countries of origin such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Korea, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka,

Burma, Spain, Afghanistan, Mexico, Pakistan, Indonesia and Columbia. “Over the past year the Language Café shows the power libraries have to bring people together to foster lifelong learning and bring different parts of our community together.” The library’s Language Café has evolved with even more CALD programming opportunities

IT’S NOW EVEN EASIER TO FIND OUT WHAT’S ON Looking for events in Wagga Wagga? Then head on over to the city’s new What’s On online listing. The new What’s On in Wagga webpage highlights everything from major events, free things to do, markets, concerts, school holiday activities, regional events and more. The new listing also features an easyto-use search function to help personalise the listings by category or date. Wagga Wagga hosts more than 700 events each year which helps contribute to the 1.3M visitors the city attracts annually. The new online listing makes it easier for these visitors, and locals, to plan their days in Wagga and the region. It is also now easier for event organisers to promote their events, for free, through the online What’s On guide. All listings are registered through the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse, and once registered are listed on the Wagga guide as well as through the state event listings via Visit NSW. now available, such as Arabic language classes for children held on Saturdays; Tech Savvy Senior computer classes in Mandarin, Arabic and Dari and a Persian Language Book Club. The library also has a Community Languages Collection of more than 2600 books from the State Library of NSW, featuring adult and children’s books in 14 different languages - Arabic, Chinese,

Persian, Sinhalese, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Hindi, Tamil, Tagalog, Burmese, Urdu, Croatian, Serbian and Kurdish. “Not only can our diverse community practice their English in real conversation, they can also stay connected with their own cultural identity by borrowing books and DVDs in their native language,” Ms Campbell said.

“If residents need another language, ask our staff and we will contact the State Library of NSW to see what’s available.” The Language Café’s 90-minute drop-in sessions are held on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturday. The program will resume after school holidays on Monday 23 July at 11am. wagga.nsw.gov.au/library

FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE AT THE CIVIC THEATRE Local students have taken a behind-thescenes look at the Civic Theatre during its first-ever work experience program. Expressions of interest for the program were open earlier this year, with interested students able to get first-hand experience at everything from stage production to marketing. Seven students from local high schools took part in the week-long work experience. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said it was a great opportunity for young people interested in the industry. “This was a great chance for students to get experience in the performing arts from theatre administration through to event management,” she said. “During the week they learned about marketing, technical and production elements, front of house operations and production management.” One highlight was Wednesday’s Music at Midday performance, with the students helping backstage and front-of-house to ensure the popular Australian Army Band Kapooka performance was another success.

A free 12-week course is now on offer for residents as part of the Ngurra Youth Hub’s community garden project. Wagga Wagga City Council, the Red Cross and TAFE NSW launched the Ngurra Community Garden project in April, with spaces currently available. Council’s Social Planning Coordinator Lisa Saffery said combining hands-on skills with a workready qualification gives the participants access to new employment opportunities. “Participants will work with TAFE NSW trainers and learn the fundamentals of garden landscaping,” Ms Saffery said. “This is an exciting opportunity for local people to become part of the project to build the Ngurra Community Garden and contribute to the good work being done at Place. government introduced the Libraries Act that mandated free library access to all community owned and operated libraries. Local government supported this act and we now see that almost all our communities have access to that vital library facility. In part, this act promised “… an amount equal to one-half of the total amount expended by the local authority on libraries, library services and information services in that year …”. Of course, there was a second part to this clause of the act that gave the government the right to set a lower subsidy, and The subject application and accompanying documentation, may be inspected at the following address until the closure of exhibition. unfortunately it has been the habit of all NSW Governments (both persuasions) to continue to cut library funding - forcing each of you as ratepayers to pay an ever-increasing amount. So what happens in other states? ACT and Tasmanian libraries are fully funded by the state or territory government. SA has about a 40 per cent subsidy and WA and Victoria about 15 per cent, with Queensland at 10 per cent. NSW funding is close to 5 per cent. It would cost a measly (in state budget terms) $23.5M extra to double the subsidy to local

government for libraries and $200Mpa extra to get to the 50 per cent funding the original act ‘promised’. In a state that is spending over $3500M on stadiums, both of these amounts are clearly affordable. Library funding by NSW Government must increase. What should you do? Write to the local members and the premier and voice in the strongest possible terms the current funding for libraries is a joke and it must be substantially increased.
