Take a 'Fresh' look at one of city's favourite cultural events The Fresh program creatively combines Seniors Festival and Youth Week celebrations into a monthlong program of talks, workshops and events for people of all ages and walks-of-life. In April 2020, there will be even more ways to explore and experience this fun, diverse and engaging program, presented by Wagga Wagga City Council. Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said Wagga Wagga is a diverse community and the concept behind Fresh is to bring people of different ages, backgrounds and
cultures together. “Whether you’re young or old(er), this year’s Fresh program has something for everyone – with a series of special events tailor-made for young people, families and older members of our community. The program is bursting with highlights ranging from live music to cross-cultural dance workshops, ancient and contemporary art forms and more,” Ms Summerhayes said. “More than 2500 people of all ages and backgrounds took part in Fresh 2019, with the broad variety of activities and focus on inclusion part of its success. “The Fresh 2020 program is a mix of headline events, along with a variety of workshops, talks and more by local businesses, community groups and artists.” Ms Summerhayes said the mix of Seniors Festival and Youth Week brings millennials, Gen Y, Gen
X, baby boomer and silent generation audiences together to exchange ideas, and learn new skills, in order to gain new perspectives and insights into the way they see the world. “Fresh is a fantastic opportunity for residents to learn something new or discover something out of the ordinary,” Ms Summerhayes said. Pick up a hard copy of the Fresh program from the Visitor Information Centre, Wagga Wagga City Library, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Museum of the Riverina and Wagga Civic Theatre. A Re-Fresh program with activities hand-picked for over 60s by the Senior Citizens’ Club of Wagga Wagga is available for collection from the Seniors Community Centre. “None of us do it for accolades or awards. It was very humbling to have so many years of work acknowledged, and not just for me, but for all the women we’ve been able to help through Days for Girls. It’s very special.” Ms Harvie encouraged everyone to make the best use of their one life. “Be passionate, be humble, be strong. You have a gift to give to others – and we need you,” she said. The awards were hosted by Wagga Wagga City Council’s Equity Team and Member for Wagga Wagga Dr Joe McGirr MP.

The big cyprus pine in the Victory Memorial Gardens will soon be aglow as Wagga Wagga City Council prepares to cover the rest of the tree in LED lights. The bottom half of the tree was decorated with LEDs back in November 2017, and Council’s Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton is excited about the completion of this work. “We started lighting the tree for a number of reasons – to help make the Victory Memorial Gardens a place we could all enjoy day and night, give a special effect to events being held in this location and to improve public safety in this space. “The project will be completed in time for the Riverina BMW Wagga Wagga Food & Wine Festival on 28 March. The tree is one of our most instagrammable locations. It’s become a real drawcard for visitors and is a hugely popular backdrop for weddings and events,” Ms Hamilton said. “We all feel safer in well-lit places, and the tree, as well as the lighting over the Baylis Street pedestrian crossings, makes the whole area feel much more secure all year round,” Ms Hamilton said. Council’s Project Coordinator Phillip Blake knows firsthand how challenging the task will be, having completed the original work. “We’re getting a large knuckle boom in, which is a special type of crane that allows you to manoeuvre around and access hard-to-reach places,” Mr Blake said. The finished tree will boast approximately 24,000 energy-efficient LED lights and 4.4km of cabling. Work is scheduled to begin 16 March and finish 27 March, weather permitting.

A local artist whose inspiration and creativity is brought to life inside an old shearing shed on the outskirts of Wagga Wagga is edging her way towards national and international success. Julia Roche moved back to Wagga Wagga three years ago with a young family after 10 years in Sydney where she studied visual arts at Sydney College of the Arts. And the long road back to her hometown has been a treechange with benefits for this artist. “The move back has been refreshing on many levels – both personally and professionally,” Julia said. “The chance to create a new studio space which aligns with my conceptual direction in a re-purposed shearing shed on our farm, as well as stage an exhibition at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery were personal milestones for me in 2019. “New opportunities have arisen from these changes which has been terrific.” Some of those opportunities have come on the back of a successful grant Julia received to assist grow her business through Wagga Wagga City Council’s Annual Grants Program 2019/20. She applied for funding through the Small Business category and was successful in being awarded almost $4000 towards the promotion of her
business to new audiences. “I engaged two local photographers to produce quality images which I then used in a catalogue which I published in both print and digital form,” Julia said. “This allowed me to promote my works to a broader audience both nationally and internationally. The majority of the works sold and were couriered to new homes and businesses in the Philippines, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and of course locally here in Wagga Wagga. “The campaign gave me broader scope to visually display my works and it also meant I was encouraged to get out into my community and network to find other creatives to employ to pull it all together. It was well worth the effort.” Julia said she ensured the grant funding was spent with local businesses. “I used two talented local photographers, and the printing was also done here … I’m a strong believer in supporting local small business,” she said. Julia recommends any local small business to investigate the Annual Grants program as a way of kick-starting or supporting
their existing business model. Each financial year, Council makes funds available under its Annual Grants Program for local non-profit community groups, individuals and small businesses within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. The program assists recipients to deliver a diverse range of programs, events and projects which support the community and enhance wellbeing. “The grant also gave me a confidence that there is support for small business … it is a great initiative by Council which is working hard to assist promoting not only small business, but local community groups and events,” Julia said.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
With the elections coming up in September this year you can tell things are starting to heat up in the political world of Wagga. The Greens have launched their ticket and state Labor is pushing the agenda of no real estate agents or developers in local government. This is interesting
as our local Labor councillors have had very little to say on this, is this because they rely on the vote of such councillors within council to push things through. Council is also pushing for diversity within a new council, something I support. The only difference is I believe that diversity should be made up of diverse cultural backgrounds, people with disabilities, women and both the younger and older generation of
both genders. Why is it that local council has only focused on women in Council? I hope they will also be running workshops for all diversity groups as well. As I have talked about on many occasions, I don’t support political parties running in local government elections. I believe we all should have our own voice and not be guided by the powers above. I do however applaud the greens ticket for

showing some diversity and placing women first on their ticket and would recommend that all political party tickets do the same. The question I am sure I will be asked is why I don’t have a woman first on my ticket if I run? The simple answer is, it’s my ticket that’s why, not a ticket of a political party where the party decides who runs where. Everyone who has contacted myself I have encouraged them to
run their own tickets and place themselves first and I am happy to work with them through the process even though they would be competition. Recently we also had a report come to council asking for deferral of fees for a developer which was supported by internal staff but rejected by some councillors. This made me think why would council help by deferring fees for big developers
when we should be supporting the local start-up businesses? So in the next council meeting I will be placing a notice of motion for council to look at deferring or having a payment plan for start-up businesses in our LGA. Cash flow is king for new businesses and I believe that council needs to play its part to help with this and work with start-up businesses to make them successful.
I hope the councillors who support the deferral for big business will support the same for small business. Thanks again for all who have made contact with myself and feel free to reach out if you are interested in becoming a councillor this year, happy to guide you in the right direction.
