Council has been successful in receiving a $20,000 grant from the Live Music Office to deliver a pilot project entitled Fitz Live. The funding is administered by Live Music Office on behalf of Create NSW and is used to cover the cost of fees for musicians, curators and technicians involved in the events. A partnership between local musicians, Wagga Tourism Partners located in the Fitzmaurice Street precinct and Council, this project will see two live music events delivered in 2018, a boost for both local musicians and the city's economy. Concept to construction Work starts on stage 1 Main City Levee upgrade
Wagga Wagga residents will start to see work on the first stage of the Main City Levee upgrade from next week. Crews from Central West Civil, who are delivering stage 1, started site preparation on Tuesday this week. To get ready for the heavy equipment to move in, on-site works this week included surveying and setting out of the works and installing temporary fences associated with the works. “Having crews on site officially moves this vitally important project from concept to construction,” Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “While, it might not look like much to start with, by mid-October residents will
start to notice the heavy machinery on site, working away on the upgrade.” Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods said upgrading the levee was a major project and some disruptions will be experienced during the works. “To make way for the levee upgrade, some sections of the Wiradjuri Walking Track will be closed for a period of time with detours and signs in place,” Mr Woods said. “Council and Central West Civil will aim to ensure any disruptions are kept to a minimum and we thank the community for their cooperation during the delivery of the levee upgrade.” Stage 1 of the Main City Levee upgrade is being delivered in two

stages, starting at Flowerdale and working around to Wiradjuri Bridge before moving on to Copland Street and working south to the Kooringal Road Monumental Cemetery. Both sections consist of embankment levee earthen works and the construction of two concrete spillways, one at Flowerdale and the other upstream from Copland Street. Stage 1 is expected to be completed by April 2018. The Main City Levee upgrade went through a thorough and considered process to reach construction. This process included many studies, designs, securing funding sources and extensive community input and feedback.
LEVEE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS – WHAT NOW?
During construction residents will see machinery such as graders, diggers and trucks working on site. For stage 1, machinery will move 25,000 cubic metres of clay, topsoil and granite. Some sections of the Wiradjuri Walking Track will be closed during construction. The main closures are: • Flowerdale Lagoon October 2017 – April 2018 • Kooringal Road roundabout to Monumental Cemetery – November 2017 to February 2018 Dates are subject to weather and works and any additional interruptions will be advertised accordingly. wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee

Little Big Day Out FUN!
LBDO a crowd favourite
The Civic Centre precinct was overflowing with music, colour and fun on Thursday morning for the free Little Big Day Out event. Wagga Wagga kids, parents, grandparents and families came together to check out, and learn more about all the great services and facilities Wagga Wagga City Council has to offer. There was everything from broomstick rides with the witches from the upcoming community production of Wicked, Botanic Gardens inspired arts and crafts and a chance to sit in one of Council’s giant graders. The amphitheatre also came alive with music from DJ Centennial (pictured above) and dance performances, while the grassed areas were filled with jumping castles, a petting zoo and a visit from the NSW Rural Fire Service.

LOCAL MUSIC TO STRIKE A CHORD ON FITZMAURICE STREET
From Front Page “The events will be held on Saturday 10 March and Saturday 5 May 2018, taking full advantage of our city’s beautiful autumn weather along with the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival weekend, so we expect big crowds,” Wagga Wagga City Council Cultural Officer Tracie Miller said. “This is a great opportunity to activate Fitzmaurice Street and promote local artists
along with local businesses in this precinct. “Local musicians will entertain crowds in diverse locations including Cave BBQ, Kidsons Cycles, Thirsty Crow, Knights Meats and Deli, Romano’s Hotel, Thaigga and Cafe Sonder. “Our tourism partners are excited to be able to work with local musicians and explore options to include live music in their business models to attract locals and visitors
to the precinct.” Owner of Cave BBQ Jason Crowley says it will be the perfect time of the year to relax with a meal and a drink listening to live music with family and friends. “We think this will be a real hit and look forward to discovering local musicians from across the board and finding ways to work with them into the future,” he said. Event curator and local musician Damian
Evans says these events will allow the public to rediscover the value of being able to access a diversity of live music in the city. “The public will be able to sample a rich cross section of local music,” he said. Wagga Wagga City Council is one of only eight NSW regional councils to pilot the Live and Local program and Wagga Wagga is the only city in southern NSW to be successful in this funding round.

Subsidy available for Oura Oura residents will be able to apply for a oneoff subsidy to assist with upgrading their septic systems. Manager Finance Carolyn Rodney says the Financial Assistance Program means residents will be eligible for a reimbursement of up to $690 for Council fees associated with the
upgrade of their septic system. “This subsidy follows the removal of the Oura Village Sewer Scheme from Council’s future plans and was developed in consultation with the local community, which included a drop-in session and meeting attended by more than
30 residents,” she said. “It was supported by three submissions during the public exhibition process, including one from the Oura Progress Association.” The program is anticipated to cost up to $42,000 and will be funded from Council's Sewer Reserve.
Residents must have a septic system currently registered with Wagga Wagga City Council with the upgrade carried out since 29 March 2016 to be eligible. Eligible residents have until the end of June 2020 to apply. For further information call 1300 292 442.

Council’s engagement truck Charlie is heading out to the villages for the second time this year, between October and December. Drop in to Charlie for updates on Council projects, to ask questions, provide feedback or lodge a request. A Duty Town Planner will also be on board to provide initial advice on planning matters. The Mayor of the City of
Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, is encouraging residents to go along and chat with staff and Councillors. “We want you to come chat with us at Charlie so that we can better understand your issues and concerns,” he said. “Whether you want to have a say on Council projects, need help with online services or know about a pothole that needs fixing, we want to know
about it.” “Drop in at your leisure for a quick chat or an in depth conversation.” Charlie will be stopping in Uranquinty on Tuesday 10 October followed by Currawarna and Galore later in the month. Michelle Kearns is now famous in her grandchildren’s eyes, after coming up with the winning names for the Botanic Garden Zoo’s new twin lambs. Ms Kearns submitted the names Matilda and Billy, saying there was no real meaning behind the names, just that she liked the Australian theme of them. From more than 150 submissions, Ms Kearns' suggestions stood out as a favourite for the zoo staff – who shortened the names to Tilly and Billy. Ms Kearns said her grandchildren were so excited to find out her names had been selected as the winning entries, and now think she is pretty famous in Wagga Wagga. Ms Kearns and two of her grandchildren, Justin Oliver and Lane Morrison, both 8, had a special meet and greet with Tilly and Billy earlier this week. You can meet Tilly and Billy at the Botanic Gardens Zoo any day from 9am to 5pm.

for increased river safety through improved signage and community education. A report is due back to Council in November, but in the meantime expect to see the start of some community safety messages around water safety. As the weather warms up we need to remember the
dangers of our river. It’s fast, it’s cold and hides all sorts of submerged objects such as trees and rocks. Avoiding alcohol, never swimming alone and learning CPR is a fantastic start to keeping safe. When we’re aware of the dangers, we can enjoy the river and other waterways.
As a community we need to get the balance right. We can’t put fences up everywhere and on the other hand we also can’t afford to be complacent. Before you take a dip this summer, I ask that you take the time to remind yourself, your family and friends of the dangers, and you have
a great time enjoying the great outdoors here in Wagga Wagga, or wherever you may be enjoying the sunshine.
