Issue No: 211

Weekly information from us to you EWE BEAUTY: Livestock Marketing Centre Manager Paul Martin estimates about $80,000 will be donated to drought relief by Council from last week's sheep and cattle sales.

Giving back to our farmers Farmers battling through the state’s big dry have received a financial boost to drought relief efforts after recent cattle and sheep sales at Wagga’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC). With eyes on the sky and fingers still crossed for a major rain event, the agricultural community has welcomed an estimated $80,000 donation from Wagga City Council to support drought relief.

Council committed to donate 100 per cent of combined net income received from the 30 August sheep sale and 3 September cattle sale at the LMC. The final figure donated to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal is yet to be finalised with all costs to be determined and deducted before arriving at the final net figure. LMC Manager Paul Martin said it was fitting for Council to contribute to drought relief through the saleyards business. “We expect the donation to be in the vicinity of $80,000,” Mr Martin said. “We are closely aligned with the agricultural community and to donate this estimated amount from the two sales is

one way Council can show its support for local farmers through drought relief efforts. Local farmers accessing those resources will benefit. “There was a good feeling across the yards at both sales. There is still a positive vibe among the community.” Mr Martin said support has been overwhelming and the feedback from agents and producers has been positive. “We had an outstanding result out of the sheep sale. It was a massive day financially with more than 50,000 head of sheep and lambs,” he said. “The cattle sale on Thursday was slightly below average at 3800 head. Overall it’s a good result for the drought relief initiative.”

A TOUGH GIG

Wagga Wagga will turn out in support of farmers at a free community concert and picnic in the park later this month. The musical event “A Tough Gig” featuring local performers is the initiative of Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and will take place in the Victory Memorial Gardens on Sunday 23 September. The concert is a free event but there will be an opportunity for people to donate to the NSW Farmers’ Drought Relief Fund. wagga.nsw.gov.au/atoughgig

Eclectic mix of artists to headline Fusion18 on Saturday 20 October Wagga Wagga’s premier springtime celebration of live music, food and culture is set to be one of the biggest yet. Headlining Fusion18 are Mama Kin Spender, Oh Mercy, Henry Wagons and Woodes. The unique Australian artists will bring an eclectic mix of sounds and styles to the Victory Memorial Gardens stage on Saturday 20 October. “Fusion has grown to be one of the city’s biggest events, with more than 10,000 people from the region and beyond,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “We’ve curated an exciting line-up with some of the country’s most creative and talented performers. “Along with our headliners, some of our Fusion18 favourites will return with DJ sets, including a DIY solar-powered sound system. “The roving performers are always a hit and this year there will be everything from stiltwalkers to pop-up New Orleans-style music. “The full line-up of modern and authentic street food will be announced in the coming weeks, along with our community performers and popup shops.

WOODES

“This year we will also have fun activities, giant games and more for families, plus a unique drawing table that amplifies your scratches and scribbles.” Fusion18 will be held in the Civic Precinct and Victory Memorial Gardens from 4pm to 9.30pm on Saturday 20 October. To discover more about this year’s festival, visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/fusion. Fusion18 is presented by Wagga Wagga City Council and made possible by major sponsor Riverina Water County Council, media sponsor The Daily Advertiser and cultural partners the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga and Riverina Community College.

FUSION18

When: Saturday 20 October, 4pm to 9.30pm Where: Civic Precinct (corner of Baylis and Morrow streets) What: Free multicultural street festival with performances by Mama Kin Spender, Oh Mercy, Henry Wagons and Woodes, plus roving entertainers, DJ sets, kids’ activities, street food and more.

MEET THE HEADLINERS

Mama Kin Spender: Mama Kin Spender is a lightning bolt moment between friends and cowriters, ARIA-nominated Mama Kin and producer Tommy Spender. It’s a stripped back duo of songs that rattle, roll and tremble, with brooding guitars, primal drums and howling harmonies. Oh Mercy: Alexander Gow, the Melburnian behind the ARIA Award-winning Oh Mercy, has established himself as an iconic Australian act. At 29, he’s regarded as one of Australia’s mostacclaimed singer/songwriters with a breadth of literary influences and a love of pop hooks. Henry Wagons: Henry Wagons is the mad professor of song. His fierce intellect was once hurtling toward a career as a philosopher, but was derailed by a record deal. Timeout NYC summed him up as Nick Cave singing the Johnny Cash songbook. Woodes: Woodes is the moniker for Melbournebased producer, singer and songwriter, Elle Graham, whose quick ascension into the limelight has caused many a head to turn. She’s on high rotation on triple j and FBi Radio, as well as being a favourite of US actress Emma Roberts.

NE W F ENCE F OR Z OO'S DONK E Y S

The home of the Botanic Garden Zoo’s much-loved donkeys Forrest, Bubba and Jenny will receive an upgrade this month when a new perimeter fence is installed. Works are planned to get started on the replacement fence on Monday, 10 September. During that time visitors can find the three donkeys in an alternative location at the alpaca yard. The new 1.5m chain mesh fence is a more secure and aesthetically pleasing compound to replace the existing ageing fence. Visitors to the zoo will notice

path closures and detours in place around the donkey compound as the construction work is undertaken. The project will take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting. Future projects planned for the zoo include new perimeter security fencing. The community is welcome to continue visiting the donkeys during construction. The zoo is free and open every day from 9am to 4pm.

BOOMTOWN: Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell (front) and Economic Development Officers Andrea Crossley and Andrew Stockman take a look at Wagga Wagga's Economic Snapshot.

WAGG A'S M I X OF R EG I O N A L A N D C IT Y RE A PI N G D I V I DE N DS

Wagga Wagga is thriving on all fronts, with the latest Economic Snapshot showing the regional city is the perfect place to invest, work and live. Data collated by Wagga Wagga City Council shows the foundations of growth are strong – including low cost base for development, growing private and public investment, a skilled workforce, positive business environment, and high levels of innovation and collaboration. “Our point of difference compared to other regions is that Wagga Wagga is the best of both worlds,” Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said. “We are a thriving city in a growing regional area and Wagga Wagga’s economy has grown strongly in recent years. “We are seeing a significant amount of public and private investment, which will only further enhance economic and population growth; and support other sectors such as retail, services and construction. “These positive trends are expected to continue into the future, especially with funding

for the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub and our Public-Private Partnership with Visy Logistics, as well as projects such as the levee bank upgrade, commuter cycling network and more.” Wagga Wagga’s Gross Regional Product was $3.7 billion for the 2016/17 financial year, up from $3.6B in 2015/16, with the largest growth in the agriculture, forestry and fishing ($24.4M), healthcare and social assistance ($11.7M) and manufacturing ($9.3M) sectors. The city has a labour force in excess of 32,000 people, with health services, retail, public administration, education and construction the top five employers. The Economic Snapshot also highlights that Wagga Wagga’s population is forecast to grow by at least 21.53 per cent by 2036, coupled with an increase in registered businesses, affordable housing and prime industrial land at one-tenth of the cost of equivalent blocks in Western Sydney. While Wagga Wagga’s prime

location between Sydney and Melbourne and proximity to Canberra is reaping economic benefits, it’s also making it more attractive to visitors. “Wagga Wagga is the sweet spot offering the benefits of city and regional living,” Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said. “More than 1.3M people visit Wagga Wagga each year with the city hosting over 650 sporting, cultural, business and music events each year – like Fusion, the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup, Gears and Beers and more. “Overnight visitors to Wagga Wagga stay an average of three nights, using our city as a launch pad to explore our vibrant region while also experiencing everything we have to offer.” Visitor numbers are likely to continue to increase with a number of major projects in the works such as the Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Park, Stage 2 of the Riverside development and more. The Economic Snapshot is available online or in hard copy at the Civic Centre.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

It is an unfortunate fact that in our modern society more and more children are requiring foster care (or out of home care as foster care is officially described by the bureaucracy) generally because the child is in

need of a secure and safe environment. This lack of safe and secure environment may be short term or long term and can come about for a whole range of reasons, many of which are beyond the control of parents. So while the generally publicised reasons for placing children in care are neglect and abuse, in many instances children are placed in

care because of the effects of serious illness and family tragedy. In reality, it is my opinion that the most significant underlying reason for an increase in foster care is the long term change in society that has reduced the linkages and supports that were traditionally provided by strong extended family linkages. It’s time now to

councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au | 0467 552 263

celebrate Foster Care Week! Foster Care Week (9 to 16 September) is about celebrating and acknowledging the work foster, relative/ kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents (foster carers) do to keep children safe in our community. Foster Care Week acknowledges the remarkable work of foster carers across

NSW, while highlighting the need for more to come on board. Foster Care Week not only raises awareness about foster care in the wider community, but also aims to celebrate and appreciate the pool of amazing foster carers and the invaluable contribution they are making to the lives of vulnerable children and young people and the community as a whole.

Foster Care Week also celebrates the value, talents, potential and achievements of the young children in care. The FCAV 2018 theme is “A Piece of Your Heart: recognising the piece of your heart you give to every child or young person who comes into your care and the piece of your heart they take with them into the future”. On behalf of

Council and my wife Robyn, I would like to acknowledge and thank all foster carers and adoptive parents in our city and region who continue to strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in their care. Thank you all.

Councillor Rod Kendall
