SANTA PAWS: Glendfield Road Animal Shelter (GRAS) Animal Welfare Officer Keli Stephens, with a kelpie-border collie cross puppy, and Customer Service Team Leader Meredith Hester, with Hazel a 12-month-old kelpie, and some of the items people can donate to the GRAS Animal Wishing Tree appeal.

Help make Christmas pawsome Can you help be a Santa Paws this festive season? While most people will be home for Christmas, some of the region’s four-legged residents won’t be so fortunate. Traditionally, the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter (GRAS) tends to have no room at the inn during Christmas and into the new year. In preparation for the higher occupancy, the Shelter is looking for donations of blankets, toys, pet carriers and dry and canned dog

and cat food. “Donations to the shelter are important and helpful throughout the year, but at Christmas time we are always looking for a little extra help,” GRAS Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail said. “Wagga Wagga City Council staff have been making donations to the Animal Wishing Tree appeal since 2009. This year any community members that would also like to make a donation to the appeal can do so.

• Ready-made and custom hampers • Local produce and gifts • Regional wine, beer and cider

“Each donation is used to help make the stay for any animals that come into our care over the festive season that little bit more comfortable. “Christmas is the season of joy and giving which can also extend to our four-legged friends.” The appeal is also a timely reminder of responsible pet ownership and that pets are friends for life, not just for Christmas. “Pets are wonderful friends that give

unconditional love, but they are a huge responsibility and owners must provide for the animal's entire life,” Ms McPhail said. “When thinking about getting a pet, remember all the factors in having one – food, training, veterinary care, shelter and be sure that you can provide all of these. “If thinking of giving a pet as a Christmas gift, make sure the recipient is willing to accept all the responsibilities of having a furkid.”
