Thousands to flock to touch champs Wagga Wagga is just weeks away from hosting the inaugural NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference. Wagga Wagga City Council won the hosting rights for the next three years, with more than 10,000 players and spectators flocking to Jubilee Park from 22 to 24 February.

The junior competition is projected to have an economic impact of $2.3M to $3M each year, with accommodation providers in Wagga Wagga and nearby towns hosting the influx of touch players and their families. The competition will see an increase of traffic around Jubilee Park and in and out of the city, with a traffic control plan temporarily in place and the relocation of the Marveloo adult laydown change facility. Red Hill Road will be closed between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, with detours either via Bruce Street or via Berembee Road, Bourkelands

Drive and Holbrook Road. Bourke Street between Bourkelands Drive and Red Hill Road roundabout will also be closed. Road closures will be in place from 6am to 7pm over the three days and detours will be signposted. “Council and the NSW Touch Association are committed to the enjoyment of all people attending this major junior sporting event, while minimising the impact on the surrounding residents during the event,” Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said. “Detours will be signposted and motorists are asked to take care in the area as there

will be additional traffic and pedestrians around Jubilee Park. “The Marveloo will be relocated from Morgan Street to Jubilee Park to provide accessible amenities during the touch competition.” NSW Touch Association is also calling out for volunteers to assist with administration, results, ground marshalling and more during the State Cup. Valentine's Day event back by popular demand From front page The free Valentine’s Day event proved to be a hit in 2018, with couples cuddling up and singles mingling throughout the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Museum of the Riverina and Wagga Wagga City Library. “As you explore the latest exhibitions, you’ll be entranced by live music and performances, pop-up bars, food vendors and a live DJ – which will all ensure it’s a romantic night out that you won’t easily forget,” Council’s Cultural Officer Tim Kurylowicz said. “You can stroll through exhibitions from ground-breaking contemporary artists at the gallery, enjoy two locally curated exhibitions in the museum, or trade glances with beautiful strangers through the shelves of the library. “Then, at sundown, bring a picnic down to the Wollundry Lagoon for a romantic outdoor screening of the cinema classic When Harry Met Sally, presented by the Civic Theatre.”

In the Civic Centre Arcade, make a request from DJ Engelbert (Scott Howie), in Love Song Requests, a live ‘radio’ show with surprise guests and your stories of love and heartbreak. SHIP SHAPE: NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas and Mayor Greg Conkey check out the new Container exhibition, which launched this week.

YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO 'CONTAIN' YOUR EXCITEMENT In today’s global world you may have enjoyed coffee from Brazil or worn clothes made in India, watched a television made in Japan while sitting on a sofa containing wood from Argentina on a laminate floor manufactured in Sweden. All of this has been made possible by a rectangular steel box – the shipping container. Container, an exciting new exhibition housed entirely in six 20foot shipping containers developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, officially opened in Wagga Wagga on 6 February. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Museum of the Riverina is hosting the exhibition until 5 May, with visitors able to “step inside the box” to learn about shipping, ports, cargo, the impact of containerisation on the ocean, the origins of everyday objects and even container architecture. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the exhibition gives the community a unique insight into one of the 20th Century’s most

important innovations. “The story behind the shipping container is a fascinating insight in to how a steel box changed the way the world did business,” Cr Conkey said. “I urge everyone in the community to get along to this fantastic exhibition and enjoy the learning experience which is a brilliant showcase of some of the things we use every day and how they travelled so far to be in our possession.” NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas said Container is a valuable educational resource and by supporting and contributing to its creation NSW Ports is helping the community to understand the crucial role ports play in the economy. “Creating a ‘travelling exhibition’ was important to NSW Ports so that the story of NSW’s container trade could reach as many people throughout NSW as possible,” Ms Calfas said. Container is located at the Visitor Information Centre in Tarcutta Street. It is free to the public. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm.

Weekly waste tip A new roll of compostable liners will be delivered to all households during March for residents to continue their great work in separating their food waste. NATIONAL APOLOGY DAY The 11th anniversary of the National Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples will be recognised at a community ceremony in Wagga Wagga on 13 February. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the Apology was a significant and historic moment for all Australians. “Particularly for the many people, including those in the Riverina, who had been personally affected by the policies that resulted in the Stolen Generation,” Cr Conkey said. “Apology Day 2019 will commemorate the 11th anniversary of a very important step by our government that acknowledges the policies that led to the Stolen Generation and the ongoing pain these policies have caused.” Cr Conkey said it was fitting to hold the event at the Sorry Day Memorial Rock at Wollundry Lagoon. “The Wollundry Lagoon is important to Aboriginal people for its spiritual, historical, social and

aesthetic values. It is associated with the Dreaming story of the Wawi, a reptile-like spirit which resided in, and protected the Lagoon,’’ Cr Conkey said. The Apology was delivered by the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on 13 February 2008. It came about as a recommendation from The National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families. It highlighted the suffering of Indigenous families under Commonwealth, state and territory Aboriginal protection welfare laws and policies. The community is invited to attend the ceremony at the Wollundry Lagoon, near the Civic Theatre, from 10.30am. It will open with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Isabel Reid, Smoking Ceremony by Peter Ingram, Songlines and dance by local youth and speech from Cr Conkey. It will be followed by a morning tea.

OA SIS RE ADIES FOR RETILING PROJEC T

There’s good news for swimmers this year with Council’s decision to re-tile the indoor pool area and change rooms at the Oasis Aquatic Centre. Oasis Manager Maurice Eames said the upgrade project was instigated to fix minor drainage issues and to replace the current flooring with anti-slip tiles. “We’ve selected the highest grade slip resistant tiles, which comply with Australian standards, to ensure people are safe when walking around the indoor pool complex,” he said. “Additional drainage grates will be installed throughout the poolside area and change rooms to improve drainage and prevent localised water pooling." As with all major refurbishment projects, there will be some inconvenience to pool users while the works are undertaken. The change rooms and toilets will be out of use for approximately nine weeks, from 22 April, while they are being re-tiled. Portable toilets and change

rooms will be available as an alternative during this time. The indoor pool complex will be completely shut for three weeks from 29 April to 20 May while the contractors complete the demolition and removal of the existing tiles. Depending on weather conditions, the outdoor pool – which is heated - will remain open during this time. The indoor pool area will reopen for swimming on 20 May. Tiling will be undertaken during this time and swimmers are asked to take note of signage indicating work areas. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while these works are underway,” Mr Eames said. “It’s the first major renovation project in 15 years so I ask people to bear with us and look forward to the re-tiled pool surroundings by September 2019. “Session one Learn to Swim programs will be shortened to 11 weeks. Refunds will be available
