Fresh is back with a diverse mix of talks, events and more Take a “fresh” look at one of Wagga Wagga’s favourite cultural events. The Fresh program creatively combines Seniors Festival and Youth Week celebrations into a month-long program of talks, workshops and events for people of all ages and backgrounds. In April 2019 there will be even more ways to explore and experience this fun, diverse and engaging program, presented by Wagga Wagga City Council. “Wagga Wagga is a diverse community and the concept behind Fresh is to bring people
of different ages, backgrounds and cultures together,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “There really is something for everyone at Fresh and this year’s program is bursting with highlights ranging from music to religion, politics and more. “More than 3700 people of all ages and backgrounds took part in Fresh 2018, with the broad variety of activities and focus on inclusion part of its success.” The Fresh 2019 program is a mix of keynote speakers and headline events, along with a variety of workshops, tours, activities and more by local community groups, businesses and artists. Ms Summerhayes said the mix of Seniors
Festival, Youth Week and new events brings the community together whether you’re young, old or in-between. “Fresh is a fantastic opportunity for residents to learn something new or experience something different,” Ms Summerhayes said. Pick up a hard copy of the Fresh program from the Visitor Information Centre, Wagga City Library, Wagga Art Gallery, Museum of the Riverina and Civic Theatre. A Re-Fresh program with events hand-picked for over 70s by the Senior Citizens Club of Wagga Wagga is also available. For full event details visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ fresh or call the Visitor Information Centre on 1300 100 122.

Nominations open for Sporting Hall of Fame The City of Good Sports is looking for the next inductees into the prestigious Sporting Hall of Fame, with nominations now open. Since 1993, Wagga Wagga City Council’s Sporting Hall of Fame has recognise the outstanding achievements of local athletes who have reached the highest level of their chosen sport. The Sporting Hall of Fame celebrates some of the city’s
most well-known sportspeople, including Olympic gold medallist Alicia Quirk (Rugby 7s), former Matildas team member Sally Shipard, Paul Kelly (AFL), Michael Slater (cricket), Geoff Lawson (cricket) and Steve and Chris Mortimer (rugby league). Nominations are also open for the Local Legends category, which was awarded to iconic cricket coach Warren Smith in 2018 – whose career was recently
celebrated in an exhibition at Museum of the Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers site. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM urged community members to nominate someone for the Sporting Hall of Fame, as new members are only inducted every two years. “Wagga Wagga has been home to many elite sportspeople who
have reached the pinnacles of their careers,” Cr Conkey said. “Being inducted in the Sporting Hall of Fame reflects the valuable contribution the nominee has made to their sport and to our community. “Importantly, the Local Legend category recognises the tireless local sporting coordinators, advocates and volunteers who work hard behind the scenes
to make sure Wagga Wagga continues to be home to so many high level athletes.” Nominations for the Sporting Hall of Fame and Local Legend category close at 5pm, 25 March. For more information or to download a nomination form, visit museumriverina.com.au/shof or call Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook on 1300 292 442.
CRIME PREVENTION GROUP
Council will immediately take steps to establish a Crime Prevention Working Group to improve communication and actions towards community safety and reduce crime in the Wagga Wagga area. A report will be presented to a future Council meeting with
a proposed Terms of Reference, membership and confirmation of support for the initiative from key agencies. It’s hoped that over time the group will have a positive effect on community and business confidence. The group is also an opportunity for Council to increase partnerships
and support, and strengthen the link between Council and community safety and crime prevention organisations. Council will also write to all NSW Government election candidates to seek a commitment on what resources they will commit to the region if elected.
GALLERY CLOSURES FOR WORKS The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery will be closed over various periods from mid-March and early April due to upgrade and repairs of the wooden floors. The main galleries on the lower floor will be closed from Monday 18 March and will reopen on Saturday 6 April. The gallery shop and Margaret
Carnegie Gallery will be closed from Monday 25 March and will also reopen on Saturday 6 April. The National Art Glass Gallery will be closed from Monday 18 March and will reopen on Tuesday 2 April. Council apologises for any inconvenience while the flooring works take place. CLEAN UP WITH A VIEW: Almost 50 litter legends volunteered their time for the community clean up of Kohlhagens Beach Reserve on Sunday 3 March. A skip bin was filled to the brim, along with 10 bags full of recycling as part of Clean Up Australia Day.

CALL OUT: Wagga Wagga City Library's Language Cafe is in need of volunteers.
Helping hands needed at library's Language Cafe Language is often a barrier for people from different backgrounds, but a Wagga Wagga City Council program is bringing the community closer together through the power of conversation. There are currently 35 volunteers and 50 participants each week at Wagga Wagga City Library's Language Café, but the program’s continued success means more volunteers are needed. “Three times a week, volunteers help participants practice their English through conversation in our Community Learning Space,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Wagga Wagga has a growing Cultural and Linguistic Diverse (CALD) community and our participants have come from more than 30 countries of origin such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Korea, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Spain,
Afghanistan, Mexico, Pakistan, Indonesia and Columbia. “With the growth of interest in the Language Café, we are putting the call out to community members who can help these new residents to Wagga Wagga and Australia improve their English, as well as their understanding of our unique Aussie culture.” Since it began in July 2017, the Language Café has sparked even more CALD programming opportunities at the library, including Arabic language classes for children; Tech Savvy Senior computer classes in Mandarin, Arabic and Dari; a Persian Language Book Club, and booked-out Italian classes. Library Assistant Mahsa Nikzad is originally from Iran and participated in the Language Café to improve her English. Today she’s part of the library team that coordinates the Language Café.
“The Language Café was a good way to improve my self-confidence as an English learner along with improving my conversational English,” she said. “It’s also the best way of making new friends.” Language Café sessions are held on Monday, Thursday and Saturday during school terms from 11am to 12.30pm. The Saturday sessions have become increasingly popular, with volunteers especially needed for the weekend class. Volunteers with teaching experience are especially encouraged to lend a hand. Anyone interested in being involved can email the library at wcl@wagga.nsw.gov.au or call 6926 9700. Information sessions will also be held in the near future for those interested in volunteering.
New compostable liner delivery Households with a Council kerbside waste service will soon receive their first annual delivery of compostable liners. The compostable liners help residents sort their food waste in the kitchen for disposal in the green lid bin. Only certified compostable liners can be placed in the green lid bin. Liners will be delivered to households along with a new waste information booklet throughout March. For further information contact 1300 292 442.

STRONG INTEREST IN THEATRE'S ORIGINAL PLAY
Tickets are selling fast for the Civic Theatre’s new production The Hall Committee. The Hall Committee is an original production from Wagga Wagga City Council’s Civic Theatre and is written by actor and comedian Damian Callinan. Mr Callinan, whose film The Merger was made in Wagga Wagga, has created the interactive new play based on stories and interviews from local people in various community halls. This September, the production will transform halls in North Wagga, Oura, Ganmain, Uranquinty, Ladysmith, Downside and Cootamundra into the fictional village of “Rummage South”. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said there has been plenty of interest in The Hall Committee, which will feature both local and Sydney-based actors. “We’re actively looking at ways we can help foster more local content by working with the local professional theatre industry to develop new works and provide performance opportunities for young and emerging artists,” Ms Campbell said. “By hosting the play in community halls, we’re also encouraging the audience to get out and see
parts of the region they might not have visited before. Tickets are currently reserved for residents of each village or town until 29 March before they are released to the general public. “Locals are encouraged to get in quick so they can see The Hall Committee in their own community as there has been a lot of interest in the play.” Mr Callinan said the play tells the story of a new Rummage South resident Penny and the stringent hall committee president Brenda, who are at odds over how the rundown hall should be used by the community. “I spoke with some passionate people who told some fantastic stories. I didn’t need to change much at all … their stories dropped straight into the script,” he said. “The audiences will have their own hall transformed in front of them as the cast usurp their residing committee to bring this interactive, immersive, hilarious play to life.” The Hall Committee’s tour of the region is made possible through a $12,000 Community Presenter Touring Grant from Create NSW. For more information on the play, visit civictheatre.com.au.
