Cr Conkey said he looks forward to the broad mix of applications, particularly those in the new Small Business category. “The Small Business grants range from $1000 to $10,000 to allow our local businesses to grow, improve their customer experience or implement innovative ideas,” he said. “The grants can be used for everything

Excitement builds for city's 4 May NRL clash

From front page A premiership player with the Raiders in 1990 and a Wagga Wagga local, the NRL club said Mr Barnhill was the perfect choice for the honour for the Raiders’ regional fixture. “It’s pretty special to have an NRL competition game down in Wagga Wagga this year, I think the community will really get behind it and it will be a sell-out crowd,” Mr Barnhill said.

“I hope it becomes an annual event. It’s fantastic for people out in rural areas to get a glimpse of the stars of the NRL.” Mr Barnhill played for three seasons with the Raiders in first grade from 1989 to 1991, making his debut in 1989 – which is significant as the club celebrates its 30th anniversary of their first premiership this season. The round eight NRL game at McDonald’s Park is the first

in a two-year partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and the Raiders, with an option for a third game in 2021. In the lead up to this year’s game, Council and Wagga Wagga Rugby League have been working to deliver more than $400,000 worth of upgrades to McDonald’s Park. The NSW Governmentfunded works are due to be complete in the coming

weeks, which will bring the spectator seating to almost 700. The canteens on the eastern side have been relocated to increase crowd capacity and female change facilities are almost complete. “We’re finishing the tiling in the change rooms at the moment, with painting and plumbing to go,” Wagga Wagga Rugby League Chairman Warren Barclay said.

their tickets too long as they may be disappointed,” he said. “About 40 per cent of the 10,000-plus tickets have already been sold and tickets will start to sell quickly now the NRL season is underway.” Tickets can be purchased online at raidersshop.com. au or in-person at the Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street and the Oasis Aquatic Centre on Morgan Street.

“The new seating will be installed over the next couple of weeks.” With the McDonald’s Park upgrades and the RaidersPanthers game set to cap off Wagga Wagga Gold Cup week, Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout urged footy fans to buy their tickets early or risk missing out. “As the tickets to this event will sell out quickly, I would strongly suggest that people do not leave purchasing

NEXT STEPS FOR FARRER ROAD PROJECT

The Farrer Road widening and reconstruction project has moved forward, with Council beginning the process of accessing land required for the works. Earlier this year, Council approved a budget variation of $3,080,000 for the Farrer Road project, bringing the total budget to $6,158,856. The proposed widening requires the acquisition of a 10-metre strip of

land along the northern boundary of the existing road reserve. Council can now apply for and enter into access licences for these areas, which would permit the start of construction prior to the land being acquired. The Farrer Road project was an action item from the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy and Implementation Plan (WWITS 2040).

MOVING HISTORY: Some of the Museum of the Riverina's historic agriculture equipment is moved off-site while the redevelopment of the museum gets underway.

Do you live on the North Wagga floodplain? Council is calling for two community members to join to the Floodplain Risk Management Advisory Committee. The committee meets every two months and is made up of Council and emergency management staff and other key stakeholders, including residents from villages in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area that are impacted by flood. The two North Wagga floodplain community members will play an important role to keep other residents up-to-date with the processes

involved with the development of the “Flood Mitigation Option Feasibility Study for North Wagga and Floodplain Residents”. The co-opted members will serve on the committee in an advisory capacity until the feasibility study is adopted. Applications are open until 5pm, Friday 29 March and forms are available at the customer service desk in the Civic Centre or online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/floodcommittee. Further details are available by contacting Caroline Angel on 1300 292 442 or email council@wagga. nsw.gov.au.

Annual Grants Program 2019-2020

Historic farm equipment relocated for upgrade works Work started this week to relocate historic agricultural equipment from the Museum of Riverina Botanic Gardens to an off-site storage location. A collection of ploughs, rakes, cultivators and a 1920s McCormick-Deering tractor were among the historic pieces moved; some of which are historically significant to the area. The careful relocation and secure storage of the museum’s collection is an important stage in the redevelopment project.

Architects are currently preparing a design for the redevelopment, which includes an extension to the current building, modifications to the existing building and site landscaping. The aim of the redevelopment is to improve the museum’s exhibition spaces, expand the collection storage and upgrade teaching and staff areas. The redevelopment project is made possible through a $3.18M grant from the NSW Government Regional Cultural Fund. It is scheduled to be finished in mid-2020.

SUPPORT FOR RESIDENTIAL LAND DEVELOPMENTS AS CITY GROWS

Council has supported two planning proposals to reduce lot sizes in Tatton and Lake Albert, which will make more residential land available for development. Wagga Wagga has been targeted by the NSW Government to grow to a population of 100,000 in the next 20 years – a 2 per cent growth rate that will require 14,000 homes. One of the planning proposals was to rezone land at Plumpton Road and Brindabella Drive and reduce minimum lot sizes. The other was to reduce lot sizes at Vincent Road and Kooringal Road. As well as making more greenfield suburban land

available for development, an increase in urban infill and development will be required to reach the target of 100,000 people. In line with this target, a planning proposal to remove the CBD height restrictions of 25 metres for a development on Sturt Street was also supported at the 25 February Ordinary Council Meeting. Council is in the process of developing a CBD Master Plan that will address height restrictions and provide a planning framework to guide growth and revitalise the city centre to stimulate economic activity. “Along with increased housing across the city, urban infill and

development within proximity to the CBD will be critical to providing an alternate mode of housing to support growth," Director Corporate Services Natalie Te Pohe said. “The aim of the CBD Master Plan is to reinvigorate the precinct and capture new business and service opportunities supported by the growing numbers of residents and visitors. “It will focus on improving the overall urban quality and include additional opportunities for residential accommodation. "A review of the height limitation in the CBD will be undertaken and form part of the overall Master Plan."

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

councillor.funnell@wagga.nsw.gov.au | 0459 988 402

With the state election taking place next Saturday, it is very important when voting we consider what impacts our Council here in Wagga, which in reality is you the ratepayer. My opinion is based on historical practices of successive NSW state governments, and the politicisation of local government. Labor were in power for 16 years,

were riddled with corruption to the point of MPs being jailed. They ignored us here in Wagga for that entire time. An example of how Labor governs is, in 1996, Bob Carr began the push for power generation sell off and privatisation. Fast-forward to 2010, Labor closes parliament to block an inquiry into the sale of state-owned power generation. Another example; our local candidate says Labor will retrofit renewable energy in

the base hospital, and yet the Labor minister will only commit to a review. Because of Labor pushing their agenda at local government and running party politics, I have now been informed the National Party intend to do the same next year - using local government to raise their profile for higher office. The Nationals are hypocritical; signs saying “Cheaper power? Vote Nats” from the party that whilst in power have

sold our poles and power wires, sold over $9 billion of publicowned utilities, forced council mergers, banned greyhounds etc, torn down stadiums. I don’t have room in this column to list everything. Remember preferences. A vote for the Shooters/Fishers is a vote for Labor. Interestingly, fish restocking numbers are at an all-time low, the Shooters/Fishers party are not even aware … ? With the likelihood of a hung parliament,
