now highly popular, online game Servo Bingo. The game is hosted through Facebook Live and participants have to support local businesses to receive a bingo card to play along at home. To date, the idea has been a great success. “Servo Bingo is Craig’s out-of-the-box thinking, which is what we all need these days,” Mr Crowley said. “With challenging times for many, to do a live, interactive stream, gives people a chance to focus on something different. It’s done in a family-friendly way so everyone at home can get involved, and it all helps to get a few dollars cycling back through to local businesses. “The one constant at the moment people can depend on is community. When communities support local, especially in
times like now, there’s financial benefits as well as many flow-on benefits, such as supporting local suppliers, keeping local people employed, maintaining positive mental health and feeling connected as a community.” As well as Servo Bingo, there isn’t much the Wagga Tourism Partner businesses haven’t thought of at this time. There’s home delivered cakes by Haran’s Patisserie, driveway meals and cocktails thanks to Birdhouse Bar and Kitchen, the production and sale of hand sanitiser through Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory and much more. in China. I came out publicly then and spoke about my decision and decision to change my mind. One thing for myself that came from my experience through this was the response to myself from the community and other councillors, both positive and
negative. During this time, I witnessed the best and worst of behaviours and couldn’t agree more with the comments written by Wes Fang MLC in his opinion piece, especially around that all councillors should be working together to serve the community.
Lastly, I would like to send a big thankyou to all the health workers in our region who have been working tirelessly over the last few months with COVID-19. Without the support and efforts of all our health care workers I believe we would be in a worse situation.
On Tuesday 12th of May we celebrate International Nurses’ Day 2020, we should use this day to thank all the nurses in our region along with all our health workers. I can’t thank you enough from my family and myself.

P R E PA R E A N D C A R E F O R Y O U R W O O D H E AT E R S Residents who use wood heaters in winter are encouraged to follow Wagga Wagga City Council’s top tips in preparing and caring for your heater during the colder months ahead. Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent is urging residents to make themselves familiar with some handy hints to ensure their heaters limit air pollution for the health and safety of all community members. “Wood heaters can be a cost effective and comforting way to stay warm in winter, but if you don’t use and look after your wood heater properly you could be causing air pollution,” Ms Kent said. “This pollution can be harmful to people’s health so it’s important to correctly use wood heaters.” Ms Kent said when wood heaters are used correctly, pollution is minimal and can be limited to when the fire is started or wood is added. “Starting the fire and adding more fuel are the times when there is the most pollution,” Ms Kent said. “Outside of this there should be no disturbance to your neighbours and you’ll be staying warm – but be sure
to follow our handy tips to make sure your wood heater is working well.” • Get your flue checked and cleaned every year by a professional. • Open the air controls 5 minutes before and up to 20 minutes after loading the heater. • Never burn treated timber or household rubbish. Doing so can release dangerous chemicals into the air we all breathe. Council also reminds residents that firewood cannot be
collected from roadsides or reserves and that fines may result. Fallen timber plays an important role in ecosystem health through providing habitat for insects and native fauna. Timber for wood heaters may be sourced from private property with the permission of the property owner, or purchased from a reputable supplier. Reports of smoky chimneys can be made to Council on 1300 292 442.

Wagga Wagga City Council has confirmed it will waive and reduce various fees and charges for a further four weeks as the community continues to be impacted by the effects of the pandemic. Council General Manager Peter Thompson said the waiver of fees and charges adopted by Council on 30 March has been extended at least until Monday 25 May. The reason for the extension is that the area is still suffering from the COVID-19 management measures and Council will continue to provide relief in this environment. The extended period will not include reductions for some City Development fees as Council has received submissions from the community for some of these fees to be retained. Councillors will consider these submissions at the meeting on 11 May. Mr Thompson said the waivers and reduced fees will assist small businesses, residential premises and individuals during the ongoing management of the pandemic and its effect on all sectors of the community. Council recognised the considerable current and future financial impact the community is facing and approved amendments to
certain 2019/20 fees and charges at its 30 March Ordinary Meeting, that would then be reviewed on a four-weekly basis. Key areas affected include Airport related activities, Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, financial hardship assistance and Food and Health related activities. Council also approved rent abatements for Council’s commercial tenants, initially for a two-month period. A review will then take place at the end of this period, from 1 June, on a monthly basis. On 27 April, Council further approved rent abatements for 54 of Council’s community lease and licence holders for a 3-month period from April to June, with a review to occur in June to determine whether these continue into July. Council will continue to offer all property holders the ability to enter into payment arrangements that suit both the property holder and Council. Property holders can contact Council’s Finance staff on 1300 292 442 to discuss their account and work together on a payment plan that is achievable in the current environment.

Motorists urged to ‘Slow Down’ on local streets
Drivers travelling along Wagga Wagga’s streets are being encouraged to slow down in a new initiative to help make local roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The “Slow Down In My Street” campaign is being delivered by Wagga Wagga City Council in partnership with Transport for New South Wales, with support from NSW Police. All three are working together with the community to make local streets safer for everyone. Council’s Manager Technical & Strategy Peter Ross said speeding remains the leading contributor to death and injuries on NSW roads, accounting for about 40 per cent of road fatalities. Between 2014 and 2018, 730 people were killed and more than 18,000 were injured in NSW. In the Wagga Wagga City Council area speed was a contributing factor in 17.8% of all crashes which is a higher rate than the rest of NSW at 15.7%. “Many of us know of people who have been seriously injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash as a result of speed. Our aim is to reduce
the number of those injured and to raise awareness of safe driving behaviours in our community,” Mr Ross said. “‘Slow Down In My Street’ is a local road safety initiative that encourages motorists to slow down on local roads and drive to the conditions. Wagga Wagga’s streets are community places for all road users, whether driving, cycling or walking. Our community needs to feel safe using our streets and this responsibility rests with all of us.” Council’s “Slow Down In My Street” campaign will focus on Hampden Avenue towards Cartwrights Hill, Gregadoo Road, Henwood Avenue, Copland Street and Red Hill Road which have all been identified as locations where excessive speed is a concern. The campaign will run over a five-week period with a speed activated radar display sign and bollards with the message “Slow Down”, to encourage motorists to drive safely. NSW Police Wagga Wagga Local Area Command will enforce speed limits on local streets during the campaign in May and June 2020. Fines and demerit points will be issued to SLOW DOWN: Sending a clear message to local motorists this week was Wagga Highway Patrol’s Sergeant Steve motorists caught speeding. Council staff help ensure food security for city’s vulnerable Wagga Wagga City Council is working with local community service agencies to help ensure food security for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerned by reports of agencies losing volunteers, Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Greg Conkey OAM and General Manager Peter Thompson held a series of meetings with agencies to determine how Council could assist. “A food security program was the result of the meetings, after we forecasted the impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable community members,” said Mr Thompson. “We identified an opportunity to support the community with Council staff – currently unable to perform their usual roles – offering to work with agencies to help fill the labour void.” Julie Logan, Manager of Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels, said the assistance was timely. “Many agencies like

their new roles. “Prior to COVID-19 we were able to provide a pop-up meal venue serving people in need, thanks to the help of our regular volunteers,” said Ms Graham. “Now this model is no longer possible, we’re cooking meals supported by Council staff and local chefs from hotels and schools, and sending these meals to agencies and venues across the city.” “To date we have prepared over 1,600
meals and distributed multiple hampers of food.” “I’m proud of Council staff for stepping up to help our incredible community service agencies during COVID-19 while our city’s dedicated volunteers are taking this enforced break,” said Cr Conkey.
