Outback Lifesavers are back! The overwhelming success of the State’s first Outback Lifesaver program last summer will see the concept return to Wagga Wagga early next year.
the new program will have the chance to register from 1 November this year. The program will run for eight weeks starting 23 January and finishing on 13 March 2022. The 2022 program has been divided into three levels: Beginner (U/8 & U/9), Intermediate (U/10 & U/11) and Advanced (U/12 & U13). “It was successful and we’ve taken on feedback which will be implemented into this year’s program. It’s great to have the support of Royal Life Saving NSW again this year as the benefits a program such as Outback
Lifesaver can deliver is fantastic for our community. “Education plays an important part in keeping people safe around inland waterways. Rivers present a number of challenges and teaching this to our younger
community members is one way to enhance water safety. “We want people to learn how to respect the river … and giving parents and carers the opportunity to get involved in the program will be invaluable to everyone learning these skills.” RLSNSW Riverina Regional Manager Mick Dasey emphasised the importance of introducing young people to different aquatic environments. “Learning these skills from an early age is crucial to developing proficiency and confidence around the water,” Mr Dasey said. “The Royal Life Saving Outback Lifesaver Program has been developed to
provide children and community groups with the opportunity to acquire relevant skills and knowledge to safely participate in recreational activities in open water environments. “As children grow, they become exposed to a range of recreational water activities including surfing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and water skiing. “The inaugural program in Wagga Wagga earlier this year provided us with a solid foundation for future programs and we’re keen to partner with Council again in 2022 for the second edition of this popular learning experience.”
An exciting opportunity is now open to the community to get involved in the future of Wagga Wagga’s City Centre. Take a 5-minute survey which is seeking feedback on your city centre. BMX track works underway
Bulk excavation is nearing completion as works ramp up at the new BMX track at Wagga Wagga’s Multi Sport Cycling Complex on Pomingalarna Reserve. Contractors moved their heavy machinery on to the track site this week and have made significant progress with construction of the 5-metre and 2.5-metre starting ramps. Berms and various other elements are also being shaped up in line with the track design by Dirtz Australia. Wagga Wagga City Council Project Manager Tom Lemerle
pet
said the ramps' construction was a visible feature of the project in the first week. “The track has been designed to AusCycling certification standards,” Mr Lemerle said. “The 2.5 metre start ramp will be extendable to eight metres for major events. Both ramps will be covered by shelters and will feature ProStart Gates from the USA.” Mr Lemerle said the track - made up for four straights totalling 400 metres - will have a polymer finish and asphalt corners.
It is also being lit with 300 lux lighting with spectating space provided around the track The track is Stage 2 of the complex project and is being funded by Council. Practical completion date for the project is April 2022, weather permitting. Council is also urging community members to stay clear of the construction site. “To ensure everyone’s safety, we ask that users of the Pomingalarna Reserve respect the construction fencing and remain outside of the site while works are completed,” Mr Lemerle said.
OF THE
WEEK
#adoptdontshop
It is the spooky season, so we’ve delved deep into our book of scary facts this week to help us name Pet of the Week as Halloween creeps upon us. We’d like you to meet Pyewacket … a quiet but loveable male domestic longhair cat who is approximately two years old. Pyewacket was a name first given to an alleged witch’s familiar spirit back in the 1640s as part of the tale of witch finder Matthew Hopkins. The name appeared again
in the 1958 film Bell, Book and Candle and more recently as the movie title to a 2017 Canadian thriller. Our version of Pyewacket is available for adoption
for $199, which includes: de-sexing, vaccination, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration, ID tag and heartworm test. Impound #C21/0430

CHEAP CARS UP FOR OFFER AT COUNCIL IMPOUND YARD
It’s on again! And time for anyone chasing a cheap car to make us an offer we can’t refuse. Wagga Wagga City Council’s impound car yard is open for business again this year with Expressions of Interest (EOI) invited during the next two weeks from Monday 11 October. Various makes and models all have to go, with the 14 vehicles on the lot ranging from small cars to hatchbacks, station wagons and large sedans. The abandoned
vehicles have been accumulating in Council’s impound yard for the past 12 months and it’s time to move them on. EOIs from potential buyers who would like to buy a cheap secondhand car are open until 5pm, Monday 25 October 2021. It’s a simple process. People can make an offer on the vehicle they are interested in and if that offer is the highest at the end of the EOI period, then the car is sold to that person. All cars are unregistered, have
clear titles – meaning it is not under finance – and come with a bill of sale certificate. Purchasers will need to arrange transport for their vehicles as they do not come with keys. It is encouraged that potential purchasers wanting to register a vehicle organise a mechanical check prior to sale. “All the cars are listed on Council’s website, along with the EOI form. There is also the opportunity to view the cars first hand during one of the viewing times in the next two
weeks,” Manager Environment and Regulatory Services Mark Gardiner said. “If you are still interested after having a look, then submit your offer.” Vehicles can be viewed from 3pm to 5pm on Mondays 11 and 18 October, Wednesdays 13 and 20 October and Fridays 15 and 22 October in the precinct of the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter. For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/cars

Wagga Wagga welcomes new citizens in online ceremonies
Wagga Wagga City Council is staging a series of virtual citizenship ceremonies over the month of October to enable up to 90 residents to become Australian citizens. Four online ceremonies were held this week, two on Thursday and two on Friday, with 32 conferees taking the citizenship pledge of commitment and becoming citizens. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said Council was pleased
to be able to offer this option after cancelling its in-person ceremonies in July, August and September due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We have a large number of people in our city who want to become Australian citizens and this gives them the opportunity to take that step without having to wait until social distancing measures are lifted,” Cr Conkey said. “We have invited 90 people, including 12 children, from 23 countries to become an Australian citizen
via a web-based video conference. “Even though we are in separate locations for these ceremonies, it is still wonderful to be able to come together for this special occasion ‘virtually’ to welcome these new citizens to our country and our community.” The conferees come from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Britain, China, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, India, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan,
Philippines, Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Taiwan, United States of America, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. There are six more online ceremonies scheduled to take place this month on 14, 22 and 29 October, and further ceremonies are planned for early November. It is expected Council’s in-person citizenship ceremonies will resume once restrictions ease under the NSW Government’s COVID Roadmap to Recovery.

City signs to target driver fatigue Fatigue is one of the three biggest killers on NSW roads with research showing it can be as dangerous as drink driving. Drivers in country areas are susceptible to fatigue because they drive long distances and travel at unusual times, which can increase the risk. When drivers are tired, they have slower reaction times. Being awake for 17 hours or more and then getting behind the wheel is equivalent to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .05. Many people are surprised to learn most drivers and riders involved in fatal crashes on country roads are country residents. In fact, country residents are four times more likely to be killed in a road crash than
