Federal funding on the line

Council, State Government to meet in hopes of saving $14.5M grant The City of Wagga Wagga will meet with the State Government in Sydney on 22 April to try and secure a funding commitment that will unlock a $14.5M investment by the Federal Government.

The Federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development committed $14.5M towards the construction of enabling road infrastructure at Bomen Business Park for the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub. As part of the funding conditions, the Federal Government requires a commitment of State Government funding no later than 29 April, or the $14.5M will be lost.

We’re now on Facebook!

“A State Government funding commitment is the final piece of the puzzle to make this project a reality,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “Without it, Wagga will forfeit $14.5M in Federal Government funding. “The proposed Bomen Enabling Roads and RiFL Hub would be a transformative piece of infrastructure for Wagga. It will provide a significant and long-

lasting benefit to current and future businesses, as well as the broader community.” The proposed Bomen Enabling Roads and RiFL Hub form a program of works worth approximately $70M. This program would see the construction of major rail and road infrastructure and a freight terminal on 95 hectares of land at the Bomen Business Park. The Federal Government funding will allow the construction of

enabling road infrastructure, which will help create the Wagga Wagga High Productivity Freight Route. “The High Productivity Freight Route will create a potential round trip saving of 36 minutes – or 21 kilometres – for Higher Mass Limits (HML) vehicles and encourage heavy vehicles to avoid the CBD,” Cr Kendall said. “The route is already taking shape, following the Eunony Story continued inside

Bourke Street potholes to disappear Regular road users of Bourke Street will soon have a new surface to drive on with works scheduled to rehabilitate a section of the road that is currently riddled with potholes. One southbound lane will be closed between Urana Street and Blamey Street from Tuesday 19 April for about two weeks while the works are under way. The centre lane will remain open so traffic will not be blocked; however motorists are

advised that there may be slight delays during peak periods. Manager of Engineering, Alex Fenwick, says Council has heard calls to fix the road and this section has been on the City of Wagga Wagga’s priority list for some time. “Thousands of road users travel along Bourke Street each day and have to contend with what has come to be known as the ‘family of potholes’ along this section,” he said.

“Staff have been working to prioritise this project by completing a series of preliminary works on underground services, which mean the main road works can now begin.” Residents and road users can receive reminders and updates on this project as an SMS direct to their phone by emailing their name, phone number, and the words ‘Bourke Street’ to communityengagement@wagga. nsw.gov.au.

Green with envy? Grab a grant like the scouts

The grass is greener at the 1st Wagga Scout Group’s hall after new turf was laid thanks to Council’s Annual Grants Program. The scouts received $2800 under the 2015/16 program and presented Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall with a certificate to thank Council for its contribution. Applications for this year’s Annual Grants are open now until 20 May, with a total of $175,000 available for community projects. The Scouts were successful

under the Community Health and Wellbeing category, which is separated into two subcategories. Funding for each application in the recreational facilities sub-category ranges from $500 to $7500 and can be used to upgrade amenities or lighting, install sport specific facilities like cricket nets or create other infrastructure like storage sheds and shade structures. The Community Programs and Projects sub-category has funding available from $500

Community thanked for feedback as Our Transport moves forward About 150 people have taken the opportunity to talk with council staff in the latest stage of the Our Transport consultation. The comprehensive consultation process is an integral part of the Wagga Wagga Intergrated Transport Strategy 2043, which is currently being drafted before it is placed on public exhibition in June. This latest stage saw the results of earlier consultation combined with a technical report to develop emerging principles for the strategy. These principles were catalogued into ten themes such as the CBD, medical precinct, cycling and public

transport and available for review at a shop front in Baylis Street. Manager Strategic Planning, Liz Rankin, says the feedback on the latest stage has been detailed and informative. “Without input from local residents we can’t provide a quality document so the feedback received so far has been incredibly valuable,” she said. The feedback will now be reviewed before the final document is drafted and placed on public exhibition. Review the latest document and stay up to date with the project online.

Councillor Column

Wagga is blessed with a diverse economy and vibrant business community, and it was good to see many members of that

community gather together for Council's Big Business Breakfast on March 18. The breakfast, having just completed its eighth year, is a living symbol of Council’s commitment to fostering innovation and creativity in our local businesses. Guest speaker at the breakfast Anthony Bell, CEO and founder of Bell Partners, spoke

councillor.poynter@wagga.nsw.gov.au

passionately about the need to be committed and bold in business. He also spoke about the importance of balance. While some of the larger national and international businesses make important contributions to our economy, for me the real key to our successful local economy are our home-grown businesses.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Some serving niche and emerging local markets, others competing on the national and international stage. It is those local businesses that best achieve balance, understand that they are part of a community and form real relationships with our community, their employees. It is not only the

diversity they contribute through their creative business development, but also the community building they do through their contributions of resources and time to sporting, educational and cultural organisations, and community projects that make them too big and important to ignore, as a recent campaign advised. Council is committed

to creating the drivers to provide opportunity for these businesses to flourish, and our commercial and economic development unit is tasked with providing information, development assistance and networking opportunities to foster innovation and growth. As Wagga grows into the future it is important that our local businesses continue to be reflective
