STERLING SERVICE: Savita Dorrell (right) with Daniel Gleeson, 4 (left), recognised for her 25 years of caring and educating with Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care.
25 years and counting for Family Day Care Educator Growing up surrounded by family and looking after her niece and nephews in Fiji, Savita Dorrell is no stranger to a home full of children. But it wasn’t until after she sent her own children to a Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) home that she decided to become an Early Childcare Educator herself. “I’ve always loved kids and watching them grow, and I could see that Family Day Care provided a lovely and friendly environment,” she said. WWRFDC is celebrating 40 years next month and with 25 years under her belt, Savita is one of the program’s long-serving Educators. “When I first started out I wasn’t sure what I was doing and wondered what I had managed to get myself in to, but after a couple of months I started to get the hang of it and found a routine.” Working in childcare for a quarter of a decade, Savita has seen many changes; with the biggest being the large amount of paperwork that the Educators have to fill out on a daily basis. “I couldn’t do it without the support of the Family Day Care staff. “They are excellent, if I ever
have an issue or don’t understand something I just give them a call and it’s no problem.” Having been both a parent and an Educator with WWRFDC, Savita knows first-hand how good the service is for the children. “It’s a home environment and they get one on one attention. “It was such a wonderful service for myself particularly because we didn’t have any family in Wagga.” She says the hardest part about being an educator is when the children she looks after reach school age. “That’s the worst part, it’s very emotional but I do try to keep in touch with them and I sometimes run in to them up the street five or ten years after they’ve left.” Four-year-old Daniel Gleeson is one of the children that Savita has looked after since he was a baby. His mum, Elizabeth, says it was an easy choice to enrol Daniel in Family Day Care. “We have been using Wagga Family Day Care for around 16 years with our other children so it was only natural that when Daniel was due to start child care we approached Wagga Family Day Care to enrol him. “From the first time we met Savita at the interview we felt

totally at ease and knew she would be a great Educator for Daniel. “We have watched Daniel grow and develop from a small baby into a clever, well-adjusted boy, and we undoubtedly attribute this to Savita’s input into Daniel’s development. “Daniel always feels very welcomed when he attends Savita’s and can never wait to tell us about the great experiences he’s had from day to day.” Savita says if anyone is thinking about becoming an educator they should definitely give it a go. “I have been doing it for 25 years and cannot see myself giving it up anytime soon. “Family Day Care provides all the support I need and looking after children and watching them grow is very rewarding.” You can help WWRFDC celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday 9 May at 7pm at the RSL Club’s Mirage Room. Spotlight on school zones
Roads around thirteen schools within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area will soon be safer with plans to install school zone signs with flashing lights. The NSW Government has provided funding for the placement of school zone signs with flashing lights at all schools by the end of this year to alert motorists of the 40km speed limit required during school drop off and pick up times. Installing these flashing lights in schools zones has been shown to improve driver awareness of the need to travel at a lower speed to ensure the safety of children and others coming and going from the school area. Roads and Maritime Services is delivering this safety initiative and plans to install signs outside 13 local schools beginning on 23 April 2015. Work will take up to two hours to complete, weather permitting. Lights are installed on pre-existing poles or new poles are put in place if needed. Partial lane closures may be in place while work is carried out to ensure safety of road users and workers. There will be some noise associated with this work, but every effort will be made to minimise these impacts. For more information about the

Lollipop is a shy and intelligent female boxer cross. She is about one year old, and when she warms up to a volunteer or Ranger, she is full of life and love! She is fit, healthy, clever and loves to run around. We know that she is good with children and other dogs. Lollipop would suit a family house with a medium to large backyard and patient new owners. Lollipop is seen here sporting a hand-knitted cardigan made by the family that cared for her after she was found on the streets. Lollipop can be adopted for $314.45, which covers her vaccinations, desexing, microchipping, lifetime registration and worming. You can meet Lollipop and her friends at Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, between 1pm – 4.15pm every day except Sunday.
