Weekly information from us to you

HOT TOPICS: City of Wagga's Lisa Saffery talks future transport options with local resident Colleen Pahl.

Steer Wagga's transport future Chance to have your say again on strategies informed by community Cycle ways, public transport and the condition of roads are just some of the hot topics that came out of the first stage of the Our Transport consultation.

A key component of the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy 2043 (WWITS 2043), the feedback from stakeholders and broader community has been

combined with the outcomes of a technical report to draft emerging strategies. A workbook “Moving Forward Together: What matters to you?” collating all of this information has been developed to make it easy for residents to comment before the WWITS 2043 is drafted for public exhibition. Manager Strategic Planning Liz Rankin said the consultation process has provided valuable insight into the potential for transport in the city. “We’ve come up with twelve

online. Staff will also be on hand at a shopfront at 192 Baylis Street until 5 April to sit down one on one with residents and stakeholders to go through the details and take comments. “I encourage everyone to take a few moments to discuss these emerging principles with us so that we can create a strategy that best reflects what the community needs and expects,” Ms Rankin said.

sections as a result of the feedback, covering everything from parking around the medical precinct to getting to and from the booming northern growth area,” she said. “This strategy will help guide our approach to all forms of transport in Wagga for the next 30 years, so before we move on to the next stage, we need as many people as possible to take a look and make sure that these strategies are on the right track.” Summary reports of the feedback received so far and the workbook are available

Star lineup at Wagga Comedy Fest AUNTY DONNA

Be an early bird or you might miss out on tickets to this year’s Wagga Comedy Fest. With a hysterical line up featuring some of Australia’s funniest people, some shows are set to be snapped up in record time. Joel Creasey, Hannah Gadsby and Sammy J and Randy will headline the 2016 festival at the Civic Theatre, while Melbourne International Comedy Festival favourites Aunty Donna and Triple J breakfast host Matt Okine will be sure to fill up seats quickly. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said the 2016 event follows on from the success of the inaugural festival in 2015. “In 2015 we sold 91 per cent of tickets overall and a lot of shows were completely sold out,” she said. “Last year was really well supported, but being the inaugural festival we also learned a lot and we’ve used that feedback to make sure the 2016 festival is even better. “There’s literally something for everyone – we’ve got a hilarious show for the kids with Frank Woodley, a special

late night event with The Wine Bluffs, and something a bit different with Cinema Fiasco where you get to poke some fun at B grade movies.” While some of comedy’s biggest names will have the city in stitches, Ms Campbell said it’s also important the festival has a Wagga flavour. “Michelle Brasier, who played the lead role of Elle in our community production Legally Blonde last year, is bringing her show Space Tortoise from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival,” Ms Campbell said. “Dane Simpson will hold an open mic night for anyone who fancies themselves a bit of a comedian, while Impro ACT will be back with Impro – The Wagga Way. “Damian Callinan will also be running a Class Clowns workshop for local teenagers.” The 2016 Wagga Comedy Fest will be held from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 June. Tickets for all shows are on sale now online at civictheatre.com.au or contact the theatre on 6926 9688. Don't delay, tickets will move fast!

A for apple, B for ball, C for Charlie! The kids from Collingullie Public School got a visit from Charlie the community education and engagement truck this week (pictured right). Charlie became a mobile classroom for the afternoon, with Council staff helping the students learn about the ways Council communicates internally and externally. From Council News to social media, the kindergarten to year 6

students discovered more about the different tools used to talk to the community as part of the school’s study into communication methods. “We’ve been learning about all the different ways you can communicate with people,” School Captain Layla Wilson, 11, said. “Today we found out about how Council communicates with everyone, like through

the newspaper.” “I didn’t know that they use videos, Facebook and YouTube to communicate,” Ben Merrills, 7, said. Charlie itself also proved popular, with the kids taking a look around the former mobile library truck. “I learned about the truck and it goes around to different place to talk to everyone,” Aleah Stone, 11, said.

Heaps to do for over 50s at Seniors Festival 2016

If you’re aged 50 or over, live in Wagga, or surrounds, and would like to get involved in some great activities or excursions, then don’t miss the 2016 Seniors Festival. The festival’s 10-day program is jam-packed with events to celebrate Wagga’s seniors and thank them for their contributions to the community. The festival kicked off yesterday with the Silver Screen Seniors workshop where a group of seniors learnt how to be real-life news reporters, finetuning camera skills and interview techniques. The official festival launch takes

place tomorrow, Sunday 3 April, at the Seniors Community Centre in Tarcutta Street from 1.30pm. The opening is free and will include the announcement of the worthy recipients of the Wagga Wagga Community Services Awards 2016. Whatever your passion, there is something for everyone 50-plus to enjoy in this year’s festival. The program is a mix of free and paid events. For a full list of events and workshops download the Official Seniors Festival program at wagga.nsw.gov.au/seniorsfestival.

Storms keep Council staff busy with over 600 callouts

Council has been responding to a surge of customer requests following unusually high storm activity across the city in recent months. Since September 2015, 11 storm ‘spikes’ have been recorded in the Wagga LGA. Each spike has resulted in more than 30 customer requests for Council assistance following the storm activity. Half-an-hour of Mother Nature’s fury on the afternoon of March 3 had Council crews working around the clock responding to some 300 requests for assistance. During the storm, where wind speeds reached up to 100km/h, 68 trees were uprooted across the city with the initial clean up requiring additional staff and taking more than two days to complete. Council’s parks staff worked for another four days to mop up the remainder of the storm damage. “The clean up after the March 3 storm was one of the biggest in almost a decade in the city,” Manager Strategic Parks Operations David Walker said. “More than 600 tree-related customer requests have been recorded for the year already, which is half of all of 2015 requests and it’s only April. “As a result, there is a backlog of non-urgent customer requests staff are still attending to. We are asking residents to be patient with our crews. "Our completion rate has temporarily been extended from 20 days to 30 days for requests.”

However, every cloud has a silver lining, and, in this story it’s what happens with storm-damaged trees and branches. “The mulch is reused on garden beds in parks and reserves citywide,” Mr Walker said. “Any mulch from weed species is taken to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre for recycling. “Council also makes every effort to replace trees removed due to storm damage. Depending on the location, the replacement of a tree after a storm is automatically listed by Council’s Tree Planning and Management staff for replacement in the following winter tree planting season.” If you need to report a tree issue after a storm, please contact Council’s 24-hour call centre on 1300 292 442.

WHAT'S A STORM SPIKE?

Council determines a storm spike by a number of factors, including: • The amount of damage caused • The number of trees down • If 30 or more customer requests for treerelated issues are received. This would be a small storm spike. Requests of 100 or more from one storm activity is classed as a large storm spike.

Ladies of Wagga Wagga, once again I hope that you will seriously think about being a Councillor on Wagga Wagga City

Good news, the Riverina Regional Library (RRL) administration centre will be moving from its current location in Peter

Street to the former childcare centre building in Galing Place in the second half of this year. Relocation of this important regional service has become necessary after the addition of five new member Councils to the network over the past three years, which meant RRL has outgrown its current address.

RRL is the largest regional library in NSW, now providing centralised services to 13 local government areas through a network of 18 branch libraries, three deposit stations and a mobile library that visits 28 communities.

Car park, boat ramp closed for Apex Park facelift

One of the city’s popular recreational destinations is about to get a facelift of more than $700,000 that will improve the usability, safety and aesthetic appeal of the area. Lake Albert water and recreational users will benefit from a range of upgrades to the car park and boat ramp at Apex Park. For the works to be carried out the car park and boat ramp will be closed from Thursday 7 April until June 30. Manager Environment and Recreation Services Mark Gardiner said the long list of works will improve the already popular location. “Some of the facilities at Apex Park are tired and ready for an upgrade,” Mr Gardiner said. “These works will make access to the area easier and safer for residents and visitors with boats and those wanting to enjoy the barbecue and play areas on the eastern side of the lake. “People are already attracted to Lake Albert and what the area has to offer. Improving this space will boost that appeal, and the city as a whole.” For boat users the project includes widening the existing boat ramp from 7.5 metres to 8 metres, allowing two cars on the ramp at one time. There will also be a boat tie-up area along the shoreline. The existing car park has be redesigned to add an extra 25 boat trailer parking bays, two rigging bays, 22 car parking bays and 4 disabled parking bays. A complete reseal of the car park surface will be carried out, with new line markings and kerbing, creation of a new traffic island and installation of LED solar lights. A wall will be built along the shoreline with coves established allowing a safe
