Hampden Bridge: A brief history

On 20 August 2014, the Hampden Bridge located over the Murrumbidgee River was demolished using the induced collapse method. The three-span, overhead braced, Allan type truss bridge was built in 1895 and officially opened on 11 November by the New South Wales Minister for Works, J. H. Young and named in honour of the new Governor of the colony, Sir Henry Robert Brand, 2nd Viscount Hampden. The Hampden Bridge was the only river crossing of the Murrumbidgee River at Wagga Wagga until the Eunony

Bridge was built in the 1970’s. The bridge was closed to traffic in October 1995 by the Roads and Traffic Authority, just short of its 100th anniversary, when the adjacent Wiradjuri Bridge was opened. The Hampden Bridge continued to serve as a footbridge and cycleway until it was permanently closed to all public access in August 2006 due to safety concerns. Wagga Wagga City Council resolved to demolish the bridge in 2013.

Uranquinty Educator wins regional award When it comes to providing quality early childhood education and care, Jackie Close tops the class. The Uranquinty Family Day Care Educator has been named Wagga Wagga and Riverina regional winner in the 2014 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. She is now in the running for the State and National Educator of the Year titles to be announced by Family Day Care Australia later this year. Registered with Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care, Jackie is one of 25,000 Family Day Care Educators around the country providing quality early childhood education and care in a nurturing, home-based setting. Family Day Care Australia’s annual national awards program celebrates the important role Family Day Care plays in the learning and development of more than 155,000 children around Australia. This year the national peak body received more than 2,000 nominations from families, which reflects the many unique benefits of family day care and the positive impact the sector is having

on children, families and the wider community. Educators are judged on their professional approaches to early childhood education and care, and Family Day Care Australia Chief Executive Officer Carla Northam said the awards acknowledged the high quality standards of some of the most outstanding family day care educators. “The Excellence in Family Day Care Awards showcase the innovative practices of Family Day Care educators like Jackie who are committed to delivering the best learning and development outcomes for the children in their care,” Ms Northam said. “To be named a regional winner demonstrates what a valued contribution the educator is making to the lives of our future generations through excellent programming and practices. “It also shows that they hold a very special place in the hearts of the families who nominated them and this is a rare opportunity for these families to say thank you.” State winners will be announced next month with the National Award Winner to be revealed at the Visions for Leadership in Family Day Care Symposium in Adelaide on 25 October 2014.

New skate facility on its way for Ashmont youth Wagga Wagga City Council resolved at its July Council Meeting to commence construction of a new skate facility, which incorporates the existing skate space, located at Webb Park in Ashmont. Council undertook preliminary consultation in April 2013 with key community stakeholders including; The Ashmont Place Making Committee, The Marramarra Aboriginal Consultancy Group, Ashmont Public School, Ashmont Community Resource Centre, NSW Police and local shop owners. The project has been designed by an industry leader in skate

facility development and will consist of a series of “street style” skate activities such as a spine ramp, table top ramp, roll overs, quarter pipe and mogul. The project will also include a shelter, access path and seating. Council is inviting the youth of Ashmont to design approved art on nominated sections of the skate park outer walls. Construction is expected to commence in September 2014. To discuss the project or review the plans, please contact John Conlan on 1300 292 442 or email recreation@wagga.nsw.gov.au

Free testing for Mr Fluffy asbestos

The NSW Government has recently announced an independent investigation to establish the number of residential properties with ceiling insulation that may contain loose-filled asbestos material. A company known as ‘Mr Fluffy’ installed this insulation in properties in and around the ACT and parts of NSW. A free testing service is now available to eligible residents in the 14 local government areas for a 12 month period, for any suspected loose-fill asbestos from homes built prior to 1980. Residents are encouraged to contact WorkCover NSW by calling 13 10 50 to determine if they are eligible and how they can apply for the free sampling service. For further information about asbestos and its safe management and removal, visit workcover.nsw.gov.au

Councillor Column

As the winter sports season comes to end, my wife and I, once again acknowledge the wonderful attributes that Wagga Wagga City has for raising

children and bringing up a family with all the cultural/ arts and sporting facilities we have. There is nothing more refreshing than being at an early morning netball game at Equex. The City should be very proud of our sporting and cultural/arts facilities which provide a unique tapestry for all who get involved. Over the coming weeks and months the community

will be hearing about more great developments in our city with the upgrade of Duke of Kent with new and long overdue amenities, upgrade to Bolton park stadium and the long awaited Multipurpose centre at Equex. I believe the future for growth of our sporting and cultural/arts facilities will be in partnership between council and the community. The community must have an active interest

councillor.negline@wagga.nsw.gov.au in managing and driving such facilities. I would also acknowledge other great projects underway including stage one of the Riverside project with the landscaping of the Wagga Beach and the expansion of horse sports at Equex and CSU. As a City we cannot forget the infrastructure projects that keep the mighty city ticking, such as sewer upgrades and ongoing road works.

Council must continue to balance all priorities for our growing city. I would be remiss if I did not also mention the CCTV project which is due for implementation in December and the ongoing commercial work in developing the Intermodal freight hub at Bomen. Both of these projects have been discussed in our city for many years. Lastly I would like to thank

all Councillors and Council staff for their efforts during the year. There are always challenges for achieving the needs and wants of the community and at times some frustration emerges in the process. It is great to see the passion that exists for our city down at city hall. Have a great Wagga Wagga weekend.

Bell Shakespeare to inspire Wagga audiences tonight The reviewers are raving about Bell Shakepeare’s incredibly exciting new production of Henry V. Damien Ryan’s vision for Henry V is inspired by a true story – in 1941, for 57 consecutive nights during the London Blitz, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed a new play each week and would then perform it for others in the shelter. This production explores the rite of passage that violence and conflict offer as a threshold to manhood. It confronts the fact that – for all the horrors of war – true courage and brotherhood can inspire remarkable achievements. In this gripping new Henry V, a talented young

cast tell the story of a king who unites his ‘band of brothers’ and a nation with his eloquent words and ideas, his triumphs and humanity. When the battle is won, this production will leave you feeling uplifted and exhilarated with the belief that the impossible is possible. A special offer applies to this performance. Full time students are able to purchase a $15 STUDENT RUSH ticket either on-line or at the door. Student ID will be required.
