Funbobulator for the win!
Wagga Wagga City Council was recognised at Thursday night’s NSW Local Government (LG) Week Awards ceremony held at Parliament House, taking out the Excellence in Communication Award for the creation and implementation of the Funbobulator to involve kids in the design of new and upgrade of existing playgrounds. Council’s re:generate Youth Festival and Neighbourhood Meetings program were also recognised as finalists in the same category. Rounding out a successful night, Nadine Crowley, Media and Communications Coordinator was a finalist in the category that recognises Outstanding Individual Contribution to Communications in Local Government. Council replaces four of its 90 playgrounds per year and was looking for a new way to get kids involved and recognised the importance of what this typically hard to reach
audience has to say on their local facilities. Council’s Media and Communications staff developed The Funbobulator a brand new ‘machine’ to design playgrounds which can only be operated by kids, or big kids at heart, and supported it with a print and online communication campaign and in person at Little Big Day Out, Council’s number one event for kids under 12. The Funbobulator provided a visual list of playground equipment along with their cost, and the kids of Wagga Wagga were asked to choose
what equipment they would like in the new playgrounds. The Funbobulator encouraged a greater scrutiny over each piece of equipments selection (and a greater understanding of Council’s own budgeting process) by not allowing the operator to go over the allocated budget for each park. This process also encouraged the kids to think carefully about what equipment they would like to see in their new playground. Judges of the RH Dougherty said The Funbobulator “has the unusual challenge of involving kids in a decision-making process, a great
strategy was developed and executed perfectly for the target audience. A truly innovative result within a very limited budget.This is democracy in action, and it’s fun!” F i f t y - f o u r communication initiatives from Councils across the State were nominated in the Local Government NSW’s RH

Wagga gets the once-over by Tidy Town Assessor
An Assessor from Keep Australia Beautiful has given Wagga Wagga the once-over this week as part of the annual Tidy Town Awards. The Assessor, Doug MacDonald (above), was welcomed by the Wagga Wagga Tidy Town Sustainable Community Committee and Council representatives at the Annual Community Award Presentation where Boree Ave in Brunslea Park was named Street of the Year. Ginger unleashes Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre her excitement serves up feast for the senses Well over 100 comments have been received during the recent consultation investigating three proposed off leash areas across the City. The feedback is overwhelmingly in support of increasing the number and quality of facilities for Wagga pooches. A random draw was conducted from consultation participants with Jen Woods of North Wagga being drawn as the lucky winner of an iPad mini. Council’s Manager Regulatory Services Greg Minehan said the
consultation has been a huge success with a wide range of feedback received from the community. “The feedback will be reviewed and taken into account for the planning of off leash areas. We'll provide an update on the consultation page in coming weeks to let people know how we’ll progress the development of off leash areas,” Mr Minehan said. Food, the delicious play by theatrical marvel Steve Rodgers, comes to Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre tonight following sell-out seasons in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. A co-production between Force Majeure and Belvoir, Food combines elements of drama, comedy, dance and cookery in an erotic mix of words and movement. A play called Food would not be complete without the real thing. At each performance selected members of the
audience will be served supper. The Civic Theatre has made a real commitment to support local producers with the delicious fresh ingredients required by the show. Locally sourced produce will be used to make the minestrone soup, and the sourdough bread and wine used on stage will be local as well. After the show, supper will be served in the Upper Foyer and once again local produce will be showcased. The show is about sisters Elma (Mel King) and Nancy
(Emma Jackson). Nancy left their remote, truck stop home many years ago; Elma stayed. Nancy chose chaos, freedom and sex; Elma stayed behind and cooked. Now Nancy has returned and their lives are disrupted by the arrival of Hakan Leventoglu (Fayssal Bazzi) ‘Hassan, son of Handsom’, a restless Turkish traveller. Help name the Lloyd Environmental Conservation area Council is seeking public input to the choice of a name for the Environmental Conservation area in Lloyd that identifies with its location and environmental purposes. In keeping with the purpose of the name and its historical context, Council has identified three Wiradjuri names suitable for the area. Niyambaa - Squirrel Glider Birri - White Box Birramal - the bush Community input into the proposed names is currently being sought and results will be included in a future report to Council for consideration. Once endorsed by Council the preferred choice will be officially registered on maps and documents relating to the area. Councillor Column I can understand the community angst over the decision to demolish the Hampden Bridge. It was a particularly heart
wrenching decision due to its heritage listing, its service to the community for 100 years, and the fact it was the first large overhead-braced Allan Truss bridge designed by Percy Allan. Unfortunately the bridge had been left to rot once its replacement was constructed in the mid 1990s, and was going to cost an estimated $7m to renovate to a standard that
would allow pedestrian use. Then there was a significant recurring cost of around $200,000 per annum to maintain it at that level. With such a tight budget and other more pressing needs crying out for funding it was a decision that just had to be made. Following that decision came a push from individuals and engineers to retain all three steel pylons as a
councillor.conkey@wagga.nsw.gov.au reminder of the once mighty bridge and for possible use later as the supports for a foot bridge. I warmed to the idea questioning reports that the pylons would be a navigational hazard and also would require lighting. Another positive was a saving of $150,000 to leave them standing. But again I was given a reality check when told
of the costs involved, $825,000, plus a recurring maintenance amount. The break down provided by an independent engineer was $140,000 for repairs, $520,000 for repainting and $165,000 for anti corroding measures. Again Councillors had to reluctantly allow common sense to prevail. The one piece of good news is that the pylon on the
Capping off gasworks site After the excavation of over 14,000 tonnes of tar impacted material and a further 4,000 tonnes of concrete and other material removed from site, the remediation of the former Tarcutta Street gasworks site is nearing completion. Council’s Manager Environment and Recreation Mark Gardiner said the project was tracking well.
“Nearby residents may have noticed some vibrations during the backfilling and compaction of the capping layer. These vibrations are associated with rollers used to compact the soil to specification. “The capping sits atop a pervious marker layer that provides a visual separation between the existing soil and imported fill. This layer, along with the installation of groundwater wells and vapour monitors will assist in future years for monitoring the site and minimising future impact on groundwater contamination.” The remediation contractors are currently demobilising the water treatment plant as it is no longer required. Any contaminated water on site will now be managed by sediment ponds. Work will begin on the reinstatement of the car park soon and, dependant on weather and other tasks associated with preparing the site for reinstatement, it is anticipated the car park will be fully reinstated in October. “The patience of residents and workers of nearby properties during these essential works is appreciated,” Mr Gardiner added. Meet Middy! This week’s pet of the week is Middy, a one year old male stumpy tail Blue Heeler with a very gentle and affectionate nature. Middy requires some special care and attention to bring him around as he is very scared and timid and at the moment does not lead very well.
