Weekly information from us to you
GIVING BACK: Wagga Wagga City Library Manager Claire Campbell (right) and the Salvation Army’s Bindy Lupis look at some of the donations that have been flooding in as part of Food For Fines.
A fine way to give back this Christmas Wagga Wagga City Library’s annual Food For Fines campaign is on again, with library customers able to pay off overdue fees simply by donating non-perishable food items.
The pile of food under the library’s Christmas tree is growing every day and donations can be made until the end of January. It’s the 15th year the campaign has been run in Wagga Wagga and last year two ute loads of pantry supplies were handed over to the Salvation Army. “The whole community is invited to be
involved even if you do not have any library fines,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Items like beans, cereals, biscuits, pasta and tinned meals are really helpful. “This campaign is Council’s way of giving back to the community. By forfeiting the money from overdue fees, Council is able to help families and individuals that are in need.” Food For Fines began on December 1 and will finish on January 31. The campaign will help restock the Salvation Army’s pantry after an increased demand for services over the Christmas period. “The end of January is also a time of year when families need a little bit of extra help as bills start to come in,” Ms Campbell said. “Countless people have benefited from Food For Fines over the past 15 years

and we hope the community continues to support this great campaign.” Since 2004, every Riverina Regional Library branch has also been involved in Food For Fines, meaning residents across the area can donate to this worthwhile cause. With school holidays approaching, Ms Campbell said Wagga Wagga City Library will be providing plenty of boredom busters in the new year. “The library is a great place for you to borrow up to 50 books, audio books or DVDs for the holiday period,” she said. “You can also download free music, movies and books with your library card. “Be sure to follow the library on Facebook for updates on the library’s action packed January school holiday programs.”

Sister City walk upgrade The project cost approximately $30,000 and included painting of walkway, toilets and external Baylis Street awnings and rear laneway; new signage for the Baylis Street awnings and rear laneway; and new bench tops and partitions in the toilets. “The Sister City Walkway has just been renovated, as it should be in recognition of our Sister Cities,” Cr Kendall said. “Council has a long and proud history with its three Sister Cities – Leavenworth
Councillor Column councillor.braid@wagga.nsw.gov.au I take this opportunity to update community members about the serious threat to public libraries across the state, as well as the library funding campaign that is currently being undertaken by the NSW Public Libraries Association to lobby the NSW State Government for improved funding for libraries. There is a network of 368 public libraries across the state and 100 per cent of NSW residents have access to library services. All NSW Councils have adopted the Library Act, which specifies core services that must be provided to residents at no cost in return for State Government funding to support libraries. The problem is that the state contribution has reduced significantly over a number of years to the extent that the NSW Government now provides the lowest per capita contribution to its libraries of all states in Australia. In 1980, the State Government provided 23.6 per cent of statewide library operating costs. This contribution has reduced to just 7 per cent in 2014-15, leaving NSW Councils the unsustainable burden of funding the remaining 93 per cent of costs. The library funding campaign launched in April 2014 has had strong community support. Libraries across the state collected over 70,000 petition signatures, which have been presented to Parliament on four separate occasions. The campaign was successful in attracting additional funding in the 2014 State budget for a four-year public library infrastructure grant program, this does not address the long term need for increased and sustainable funding for public libraries. I urge community members to support the library funding campaign by ensuring the State Government and our Local Member know that public libraries are an important issue for their constituents in the lead up to the 2015 state election. There is evidence statewide of reductions in library opening hours, staffing, collections, programs and services. Can you imagine what life would be like without your public library? I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas.

in Kansas, USA, Nördlingen in Germany and Kunming in China.” Cr Kendall said a trip to Kunming is being organised for next year to help strengthen Wagga Wagga’s ties with the city. “Next on the agenda from a Sister City perspective is Kunming next year” he said. “It was decided we would coincide the Sister City visit with the CSU graduation at Kunming – their 15th anniversary graduation.”
