Brumbies launch ticket sales
Issue 25
Weekly information from us to you
Former Wallaby Pat McCabe hit the sand at Wagga Beach this week to officially launch ticket sales for January’s Super Rugby trial game. The Brumbies star retired earlier this year and is now special projects manager at the club. The 31 January clash against the New Zealand-based Highlanders will be the first course in a feast for the city’s football fans, with the City-Country rugby league game being played in Wagga Wagga in May. McCabe said he is looking forward to 30 of his former teammates descending on Wagga Wagga for the last trial before the 2015 Super Rugby season kicks off. “To be playing against such a great international team at a smaller ground and in front of people who don’t get to see you quite as often will be a great occasion and certainly one a lot of the guys are looking forward to,” he said. “Anytime you get to play a game in front of the wider Brumbies community — not just the local Canberra community — is always a great occasion.” The high profile of the Super Rugby competition will reinforce Wagga Wagga’s reputation as the City of Good Sports, having produced former Wallaby Nathan Sharpe and past Brumbies players Nic Henderson and John Langford. January’s trial game is the first of two under an agreement between Wagga Wagga City Council and the ACT Brumbies, with another to take place in 2016. McCabe expected both clubs to field strong sides, which will attract rugby fans from across the Riverina. “I think at the moment Aaron Smith is the best halfback in the world and Ben Smith is the best fullback in the world and between those two, ticket sales should be strong,” McCabe said.

Pets are a gift for life – not just Christmas With Christmas only days away Wagga Wagga City Council is reminding residents that giving pets as Christmas presents can be a great idea, but they require a long term commitment.
“An animal is a gift for life and all too often people don’t think about the long term care and expenses associated with giving pets as gifts,” Manager Regulatory Services Greg Minehan said. “It is often the case that we see a spike in the number of abandoned and dumped animals after the Christmas and school holiday period. “We want to try and avoid this happening and are asking people to do their research and think carefully about the commitment of buying an animal as a present.
“People need to carefully consider the breed of animal they want to give and long term ramifications of giving an animal as a Christmas present.” For people who have done their research and are keen to get a new pet, the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter has a range of animals looking for a new family to love them. “All animals adopted from the shelter are microchipped, lifetime registered, vaccinated and desexed and adult dogs are heartworm tested,” Mr Minehan said. “Animals can make great Christmas presents, as long as people have done their research, matched the breed to the person receiving the gift and the receiver is aware of the long term commitment of owning a pet.” The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter is open to the public Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4:15pm. The shelter is a facility operated by Wagga Wagga City Council for housing lost, stray or dumped companion animals. Approximately 1500 dogs and 600 cats are housed at the shelter each year.
Meet Chelsie
This week’s Pet of the Week is Chelsie, a young female kelpie-cross-staffy. Chelsie has an affectionate and loving nature. Being a young dog, she is playful and would make a great addition to a family with land or a large yard with good fences. Chelsie will need regular exercising and plenty of attention. Mixing with other dogs will also keep her happy. Chelsie can be adopted for $314.45, which includes vaccinations, desexing, deworming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check. You can meet Chelsie and her friends at Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday, 1pm to 4.15pm. For more information, contact the Animal management Rangers on 6971 4651 or visit www.rescuerex.webs.com.

Wagga is not known for having a big thing like a Big A p p l e or Big Banana but if the vision of Wagga Wagga City Council comes to fruition, we will have
a very large development in our industrial park. The rail intermodal site – Riverina Intermodal Freight & Logistics (RIFL) – will create a large hub that will allow the transhipment of containers to and from rail, as well as a bulk grain handling depot to serve the region and in particular the ROBE (Riverina Oil and Bioenergy) vegetable oil production plant.

be an open access site, meaning anyone who wishes to move containers to these three major ports can load them onto rail at Wagga. Wagga will benefit greatly from this development. The first, the redevelopment of the Eunony Bridge Road, is already under way. This road improvement will allow for efficient heavy vehicle access from the Sturt Highway to Byrnes Road.
Exhibition Period: 29 November 2014 to 23 January 2015 (inclusive) Inspection Venue: The proposed amendments are available for inspection at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre, Cnr Baylis and Morrow Sts, Wagga Wagga during the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (public holidays excluded) and on Council’s website www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/ public in the Strategic Planning Exhibition section. PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF DRAFT AMENDMENT TO WAGGA WAGGA LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN 2010 AND DEVELOPMENT CONTROL PLAN 2010
Aim: To exhibit the Planning Proposal containing nine (9) items that amend Local Environmental Plan maps, land use tables and clauses and exhibit amendments to the Development Control Plan to introduce B6 Enterprise Corridor controls. The nine (9) LEP amendment items include: • Item 1 - St Luke’s Anglican Church and surrounding residential precinct - rezone land from R1 General Residential to R3 Medium Density Residential. • Item 2 - Sturt Highway (including Edward Street, Hammond Avenue and Lake Albert Road) Wagga Wagga - rezone from IN1 General Industrial, IN2 Light Industrial and B1 Neighbourhood Centre to B6 Enterprise Corridor and B4 Mixed Use and insert appropriate land use table and clauses. • Johnson and Tarcutta Street Precinct - rezone from SP1 Special Activities to B3 Commercial Core and apply a floor space ratio of 2:1 and height of building restriction of 16 metres. • Item 4 - land use table amendments in response to a review by Council on appropriate uses within certain zones. • Item 5 - Spring Street, Wagga Wagga - rezone from RE1 Public Recreation to R1 General Residential to facilitate the sale of land owned by Council. • Item 6 - McPherson Oval, North Wagga Wagga - rezone from RU5 Village to RE1 Public Recreation to reflect the current use of the land. • Item 7 - Reclassification of (Part Lots) Map - to correct a Community Land error. • Item 8 - Lot Size Maps - Amend the scale of the series of lot size
HEY TOSSER! You know it’s wrong
The next improvement is to remove the level crossing at Bomen, which will be replaced by a rail underpass to connect Byrnes Road directly to the Olympic Highway. These developments will then allow heavy vehicles to bypass Edward Street. The best outcome for Wagga is the availability of jobs for city people. The site will attract new business, such as the increased capacity at the battery recycling
plant, and new business means new jobs. The development will be funded by a mix of Federal funding (already committed), State (some committed but we need more) and Local Government. Council will need to borrow funds to complete this development.
