Community supports Day of Action The community flocked to Wagga Wagga City Library on Friday to show their support for the vital service.
The Library took part in the statewide Day of Action, which highlighted community concern about declining State Government funding in the lead up to the March state election. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall read to children as part of Storytime, while the Day of Action also featured the release of balloons and a cake decorated to show the gulf in library funding in NSW. The community was also urged to use their words to make a difference by
writing on special postcards to be sent to Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire. Cr Kendall read Where’s Spot, with the large group of children at Storytime helping the Mayor act out the classic picture book. As the community celebrated all the Library has to offer, Riverina Regional Library Executive Director Robert Knight said an increase in funding was needed to maintain services. “NSW’s funding is the lowest in Australia,” he said. “Local government bears most of the cost and to keep that pace is unsustainable. “We’re already seeing some attrition to services in the 368 public libraries across NSW, such as collection, staff and opening hours. This is symptomatic of the funding.”
Local government has had to fill the gap left in library funding, which is now just seven cents in the dollar – a drop from 23 cents in 1980. Since 1980, local government has increased its share from $5.43 per capita to $47.23. As a result, NSW has the lowest per capita rate of library funding of all states. The NSW public library network needs an initial funding increase of $3.5M to survive, with indexation to follow. This equates to less than one cent per person, per day. While others will swelter this summer, Central resident Rick Campbell will be keeping cool after winning 10 adult and 10 concession passes to Oasis Aquatic Centre just by subscribing to Council News. Mr Campbell said the prize couldn’t have come at a better time, not just because of the impending heat. “My little girl has just started swimming lessons and with the passes my son can come along as well,” Mr Campbell said. “The kids love swimming and it will be great in school holidays.” Mr Campbell said Council News was a great way to keep up to date with what was

Detours in place for Eunony Bridge Road deviation
As part of the Eunony Bridge Road Deviation Project, Oura Road between Hale Street and Byrnes Road will be closed to through traffic from Tuesday 9 December. Access to Byrnes Road will be via Hale Street and Hillary Street. A four-and-a-half tonne load limit applies along this detour. Heavy vehicles are advised to use alternate routes via the Olympic Highway. All detours will be clearly marked and will be removed prior to Christmas. Weekly mowing report
Over the past few weeks I have been fortunate to attend a variety of community events that have highlighted for me what a diverse and vibrant region we live in. Each event has demonstrated elements of strong community leadership by the many people involved — whether they are the organisers, committee members, volunteers or people attending. The first of these events was Fusion 2014. This event continues to go from strength to strength with upwards of 10,000 people enjoying a range of entertainment, food and experiences from a diverse range of cultures. This festival showcases the diverse nature of our community and celebrates what it means to share experiences. Witnessing so many families strolling through the Victory Memorial Gardens, stopping to talk, dancing to the fantastic music and enjoying the atmosphere was amazing. I was humbled by the experience of providing a civic welcome and then being part of the audience for the event “Islamic Conversations” held a few weeks ago. Two well-respected and high profile speakers Susan Carland and Dr Zachary Matthews presented their views as to what it means to be a Muslim in Australia today. The “conversations” the speakers and members of the public engaged in were quite moving in both the content and breadth of what was discussed. Most people agreed, myself included, that they left this event a different person to what they were when they arrived. These experiences have highlighted for me that our region is at the forefront of social engagement and responsibility and that community leadership comes in many forms. Being open and willing to embrace diversity and participate is what each and every member of the community does on a daily basis. These events embody the rich tapestry that is our community. I wish everyone a safe and peaceful Christmas and best wishes for 2015.
COMBINED RIDERS OF WAGGA TOY RUN Sat 6 December
Boxer and former NRL player Joe Williams will also be in attendance to speak to the community as part of the official opening. The event starts at 3.30pm with registration on the day and a free barbecue. A parent or guardian’s signature is required for minors.
The weekly mowing report outlines the areas that Council is mowing and the areas scheduled for mowing in the coming week. The North team has commenced mowing in North Wagga and Wiradjuri. The East team has commenced mowing in Forest Hill. This will be followed by mowing in Lake Albert on 11 December. The West team has commenced mowing in Glenfield. This will be followed by mowing in Lloyd on 11 December. The Peak Season team has commenced roundabouts maintenance city wide. Village mowing is currently taking place in Tarcutta. This will be followed by mowing in Humula on 10 December. Please note with the recent rains that there is now extra work required citywide and the Parks teams are aiming to have all areas well presented before Christmas.

This week’s pet of the week is Charlie, a six-year-old male labrador retriever collie. Charlie is best suited to a larger property without poultry. He walks beautifully on a lead and follows commands with ease. Charlie is looking for a permanent home with someone who will love and care for him. Design competition for My Appventure app icon
My AppVenture is a live, dynamic iPhone and Android app that lets visitors choose their own “AppVenture” or can design one for them. Wagga Wagga City Council has partnered with Junee and Coolamon Shire Councils, along with local company 365cups, to launch the world-first visitation application. The app will be used as a marketing tool to promote visitation to Coolamon, Junee and Wagga Wagga. Users can plan their trip and include local attractions, dining options and make accommodation bookings directly with the providers. Local businesses, events and tourism operators are encouraged to be part of the initiative and have the opportunity to sign up for a package. My AppVenture
packages are offered ranging from $500 to $2000 for industry to buy in and appear on the app for 12 months. The app is currently in development and you could design its icon. All designs will be placed on the My AppVenture website. A panel of judges will choose a winner and all entrants will be invited to the launch. The winning entry will be used as the app icon for My AppVenture, as well as win $500 from 365cups. Entries close December 12, 2014. PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF DRAFT AMENDMENT TO WAGGA WAGGA LEP 2010 (AMENDMENT NO. 4 TO WAGGA WAGGA LEP 2010)
Aim: To exhibit the Revised Planning Proposal to correct a number of anomalies with heritage items that are present in the Wagga Wagga Local Environmental Plan 2010 Schedule 5, Environmental Heritage. This Revised Planning Proposal also seeks to remove six items from Schedule 5. This planning proposal was submitted to the Department of Planning on 1 November 2011. Following the Gateway Determination a range of additional anomalies were identified of a similar nature in Schedule 5 and are now sought to be determined under this revised planning proposal.
