Stage set for AFL clash
Finishing touches on new canteen and media box at Robertson Oval There will be plenty of pies at the upcoming AFL NAB Challenge game at Robertson Oval – and not just on the football field. “Robbo” has been given a facelift ahead of the Magpies v Kangaroos pre-season clash on 5 March, with a new canteen and media box adding to the ground’s first class facilities. The second canteen has been completed, with finishing touches on the media box taking place in the coming days. Collingwood and North Melbourne are making the trip
to Wagga as part of a two-year partnership between AFL NSW/ ACT and Council. The game comes weeks after more than 7000 footy fans watched the Brumbies take on the Waratahs in a Super Rugby trial at McDonald’s Park. The NAB Challenge looks set to trump that crowd figure, with 4800 tickets already sold for the blockbuster between the two Victorian powerhouses. “The early indication is that it could be standing room only at Robertson Oval,” Council’s Director Environmental and

Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. “NRL fans had to be turned away at the City-Country Origin game at McDonald’s Park last year, so my advice to Aussie rules supporters is to buy your tickets now or risk missing out.” Along with the NAB Challenge game and upgrades to Robertson Oval, the partnership with AFL NSW/ACT will see Wagga benefit from programs for local Indigenous and multicultural footballers. “Major sporting events provided a more than $4M
boost to the local economy last year, but this partnership will also have a big impact at a grassroots level,” Ms Summerhayes said. “AFL NSW/ACT will coordinate Kick Start Centres in Ashmont and Tolland for Indigenous youth as well as the Multicultural AFL Program. “Wagga will also host a North East Australian Football League game in June to complement the AFL pre-season match.” Tickets are on sale now at afl.com.au/tickets/nabchallenge.
