Weekly information from us to you

UPGRADES: Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Phillip Blake takes a look at the new canteen at Robertson Oval. Construction is under way on the media box (right), while the ground is in great condition (below right).

WIN A SIGNED FOOTY

One lucky footy fan will score a ball from the NAB Challenge in Wagga signed by the Collingwood and North Melbourne captains. Simply like City of Wagga Wagga on Facebook to go in the draw to win: facebook.com/waggacouncil. The winner will be selected at random at 7 March 9am. This prize is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.

Stage set for AFL clash

Finishing touches on new canteen and media box at Robertson Oval There will be plenty of pies at the upcoming AFL NAB Challenge game at Robertson Oval – and not just on the football field. “Robbo” has been given a facelift ahead of the Magpies v Kangaroos pre-season clash on 5 March, with a new canteen and media box adding to the ground’s first class facilities. The second canteen has been completed, with finishing touches on the media box taking place in the coming days. Collingwood and North Melbourne are making the trip

to Wagga as part of a two-year partnership between AFL NSW/ ACT and Council. The game comes weeks after more than 7000 footy fans watched the Brumbies take on the Waratahs in a Super Rugby trial at McDonald’s Park. The NAB Challenge looks set to trump that crowd figure, with 4800 tickets already sold for the blockbuster between the two Victorian powerhouses. “The early indication is that it could be standing room only at Robertson Oval,” Council’s Director Environmental and

We’re now on Facebook!

Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. “NRL fans had to be turned away at the City-Country Origin game at McDonald’s Park last year, so my advice to Aussie rules supporters is to buy your tickets now or risk missing out.” Along with the NAB Challenge game and upgrades to Robertson Oval, the partnership with AFL NSW/ACT will see Wagga benefit from programs for local Indigenous and multicultural footballers. “Major sporting events provided a more than $4M

boost to the local economy last year, but this partnership will also have a big impact at a grassroots level,” Ms Summerhayes said. “AFL NSW/ACT will coordinate Kick Start Centres in Ashmont and Tolland for Indigenous youth as well as the Multicultural AFL Program. “Wagga will also host a North East Australian Football League game in June to complement the AFL pre-season match.” Tickets are on sale now at afl.com.au/tickets/nabchallenge.

Tarcutta Street improvement works to begin 1 March

Road works to improve a section of Tarcutta Street, between Morgan and Edward streets, will start on Tuesday, March 1. The works will include kerb and gutter replacement along the eastern side of the street and asphalt works to replace the road surface. The kerb and gutter works will be undertaken during the day (7am6pm) from Tuesday 1 March and is expected to take about three days to complete. The southbound kerbside lane only will be closed to traffic during this period.

Residents and guests will have access under the direction of traffic control. Due to the high traffic volume at this location, the asphalt work will be undertaken at night (7pm-6am) starting Wednesday 2 March and is expected to take eight nights to complete. This work will be completed one side at a time to allow one-way traffic only. Detours will be in place for impacted traffic. Traffic controls and VMS message boards will also be in place to assist motorists during the works.

Residents and guests will be allowed access to properties under traffic control. All lanes will be reopened outside of work hours. Meanwhile, road works on Plumpton Road remain on schedule. Works to rehabilitate a section of this road, between Redhill Road and Lake Albert Road, started on February 17 and are expected to take about two months to complete. For more information on these works, or other road works in the city, or for a Tarcutta Street night works detour map, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ roads.

Cricket coach honoured with new training facility

Taylor, Lawson, Slater and now Smith. Well-known coach Warren Smith OAM has joined the list of cricket greats immortalised in the Bolton Park precinct with the unveiling of the Warren Smith Nets this week. The project is a legacy of the first Sheffield Shield match played at Robertson Oval last year and follows the naming of the three Bolton Park ovals in honour of Mark Taylor, Geoff Lawson and Michael Slater. “Wazza” officially unveiled the new training facility following a presentation from Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall and Cricket NSW. “Wagga Wagga is the City of Good Sports thanks to the hard work of people like Warren Smith,” Cr Kendall said. “Now the next generation of sporting stars can train at this quality facility and be inspired by Warren and all he has done for the game.” Cricket NSW Chief Executive Andrew Jones said the nets were a wonderful addition to Bolton Park. “Bolton Park is a marvellous resource for the Wagga Wagga cricket community,” he said. “The Mark Taylor, Michael Slater and Geoff Lawson Ovals are now joined by the Warren Smith Nets

LEGACY: Pamela and Warren Smith unveil the sign at the new nets at Bolton Park. which provide local cricketers with an outstanding practice facility that can be used year round.” “Cricket NSW is delighted to have been able to support this development through our McDonald’s Community Grants Program, and we thank the City of Wagga Wagga for their continued support of cricket,” said Mr Jones. Through his 46 years as a coach Smith has made an extraordinary contribution to Wagga Wagga, Riverina and NSW cricket, including overseeing the development of NSW and Australian batsman Michael

Slater, NSW Blues all-rounder Dominic Thornely and Victorian and Australian all-rounder Andrew McDonald. In 2009 he was awarded an OAM for services to cricket through coaching roles at the state, regional and local levels and in 2014 he became just the second person to receive a Cricket NSW Lifetime Achievement award for coaching. The Warren Smith Nets were a joint initiative between Cricket NSW through its McDonald’s Community Grants Programs and the City of Wagga Wagga.

Legally Blonde good guy takes home CAT award History has shown the good guy usually wins. For former Wagga boy Brent Dolahenty, this is certainly the case. Dolahenty has scooped the pools at the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) awards, taking out Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his portrayal of good guy Emmett in last year’s Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre community production Legally Blonde: The Musical. Dolahenty received the accolade at the CAT gala awards night held in Canberra on Saturday 20 February. Dolahenty said the award was a testament to all involved in the Wagga production and extended thanks to the Civic Theatre. “I couldn’t be prouder of our

production of Legally Blonde,” he said. “Over the past 20 years I have been involved in a variety of performances on the Civic Theatre stage, many that are still talked about to this day. "I am so honoured and humbled to say I’m a part of this history and I’m proud to represent Wagga Wagga by winning this award.” Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said the theatre has been lucky to have the talents of Dolahenty and other highclass performers on show over the years. “Brent has gone on to achieve some great success from his beginnings in Wagga. It goes to show that regional training can be a great spring

board for aspiring performers,” Ms Campbell said. In addition, Meredith Adams took out the CAT award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Mary Poppins in the Bidgee Theatre Production’s Mary Poppins, which showed at the Wagga Civic Theatre in 2015. Legally Blonde: The Musical was nominated for seven 2015 CAT awards. “This was a tremendous effort and a real credit to all the cast, crew and volunteers involved in the production,” Ms Campbell said. The next community production will be the Community Choir in November at the Wagga Music Bowl conducted by Dr Jonathan Welch.
