People's Panel expanding in 2016, more opportunity to have your say Have something to say about Council projects and strategies, but don’t have a lot of time?

The People’s Panel could be for you! Following the success of the People’s Panel in 2015, we are now expanding it so that more people can contribute in more ways. The panel was launched in

February last year with nearly a hundred residents and commnity groups contributing to online discussions on seven different topics. To be a part of the panel this year all you have to do is register at the Your Say Wagga website, wagga. nsw.gov.au/peoplespanel. As well as online forums and surveys, there will be opportunities to take part in focus groups and other forms of consultation. You will

be able to meet with Council staff involved in the projects and other residents who want to be a part of Council’s decision-making process. The Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Rod Kendall, is urging residents to make their opinion count. “We can’t make informed decisions on behalf of the community unless you tell us what you think about certain projects and processes,” Cr Kendall said.

Apology Day 2016

Wagga Wagga City Council invites you to attend the unveiling of the ‘Marrambidya Wetland Healing Place’ to commemorate the 8th Anniversary of the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples delivered by then Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. A morning tea will follow the official ceremony.

“No matter how busy you are, the Your Say website and People’s Panel opportunities make it easy for you to ensure that your voice is being heard in your own time.” Caroline Love was a member of the People’s Panel in 2015 and says it is worthwhile. “It has been really interesting to be a part of the conversation and hear different views on various topics and it has made me more aware of Council's planning and processes,”

she said. “Being a part of Council’s decision making process is also a great way to be a part of the local community. “I feel it hasn’t taken up a lot of my time and the system makes it really easy to contribute when you can.” First up we want to hear what ideas you have for how Council’s community education truck could be used in your area. You can register online now at wagga.nsw.gov.au/peoplespanel.

NSW Governor no stranger to Wagga

The Governor of NSW was officially welcomed to Wagga Wagga at a Mayoral reception on Thursday afternoon. His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) and Mrs Linda Hurley were greeted at the Civic Centre by a party including Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire, Mayor Rod Kendall, Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout and General Manager Alan Eldridge. The Governor also met with Miss Wagga Melissa McKinnon, Community Princess Megan Short, Citizen of the Year Joe Williams and Young Citizen of the Year Hannah Kempton before visiting the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery for the reception.

Included in his four-day tour was a March-Out Parade and Luncheon for 31 and 32 Platoons 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka, the BrumbiesWaratahs trial match, a visit to Mount Austin High School and a number of other tours and functions. “We’re delighted to be back, we lived here many, many years ago,” the Governor said. “We’re no strangers, but the city has changed and this is a good opportunity for Linda and I to come down and catch up with what’s happening in the Riverina. “I visit regional areas for a four-day period every month and build a program around Indigenous issues, youth development and what’s happening the region in

terms of innovation and agriculture. “We need to get out there and tell people they’re doing a great job and it’s really encouraging to see the spirit that’s in our rural and regional areas.” Having lived in both ACT and NSW, the Governor was tight-lipped on who he would be supporting in Saturday’s BrumbiesWaratahs trial match. “I was a Brumbies fan living in Canberra for 15 years,” he said. “Now as the Governor of NSW the Waratahs need to be supported as well, so when they’re both in the one location it’s a good reason to come and have a look.” The Governor was scheduled to finish the tour of Wagga on Sunday.

Help improve internet safety Tuesday 9 February marks Safer Internet Day, a global initiative to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology. With 2016 being the national year of digital inclusion, public libraries are perfectly placed to help communities with access to information technology and building digital literacy skills. Bubbles and books at Storytime The children’s area in Wagga Wagga City Library was abuzz with laughter from its littlest members this week when Storytime resumed for 2016. (From left) Library programs officer Michael Scutti helped John Buckley, 3, Camille Gourieroux, 3, and Eloise Richards, 4, discover the wonderful world of literature with stories, rhymes, songs and craft. Council crews busy patching potholes after wet weather Council crews have been busily filling potholes across the city following a wet end to January. In most cases, potholes are caused by moisture working its way through the road surface, or from the subgrade becoming saturated during rain events like those seen last weekend. “You will always get potholes when it rains, but you need to wait for them to dry out before they can be repaired,” Council’s Acting Manager Engineering Lee Shoemark said. “Moisture prevents the bitumen from adhering to road pavement, which means the patch will come away. “In some instances, the severity of a pothole means that more involved repairs are required, such as replacing the road pavement material and adding a binder to produce a higher strength material. “Our road maintenance crews get out there as soon as possible and in the meantime we ask the community to please be patient and drive to the conditions.” Mr Shoemark said with a road network of more than 2300km, it’s vital that residents help by letting Council know where potholes are. “We rely on the community to be our eyes and ears and encourage them to report a pothole or any other issues as soon as possible,” he said. “You can call Council on 1300 292 442, report them online at wagga. nsw.gov.au/onlineservices or use the iCouncil smartphone app available on the Online Services webpage.”

The Super Rugby trial in Wagga is set to be a blockbuster, with players in both squads fighting for permanent spots before the season proper gets under way. Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham will be watching over the game against the Waratahs with a keen eye and was expecting his players to put their hands up for selection. “Players from both teams are going out there with something to prove,” Larkham said. “There’s a number of guys getting an opportunity with our team and it’s the same with their team, there’s a few Wallabies sitting out of their squad. “Everyone who takes the paddock will be trying to put their best foot forward and if that

means a bit of confrontation then I’m sure they’ll bring that.” The Brumbies will field an experienced side in the trial, with seven internationals set to entertain a big crowd at McDonald’s Park on Saturday night. Wallabies representatives Matt Toomua, Tevita Kuridrani, Joe Tomane, Ben Alexander, Sam Carter and Josh Mann-Rea will all get valuable game time, while Argentine international Tomás Cubelli will make his first appearance for the club. The Waratahs have brought a 26-man touring party to Wagga, featuring a range of experience and a contingent of homegrown NSW talent, including 11 uncapped Super Rugby players.

Councillor Column

As a regional capital in this south western area of NSW, Wagga is a vital cog in continuing the state’s growth and prosperity. Within regional NSW

there exists a diverse range of industries that include agriculture, manufacturing, mining, education, defence, construction, health, tourism and services. Together with the whole of regional NSW we are building strong and competitive regional economies for the prosperity of regional communities and the state as a whole. Regional NSW is

councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au

home to more than 2.9 million people, around 41 per cent of the NSW population. It contributes almost one third or $138 billion of gross state product. Our current government has indicated it recognises the need and opportunity for a tailored approach to economic development for regional NSW and has stated that driving economic growth in regional NSW is a key

goal to rebuilding the economy. We now have the task of ensuring this commitment is met throughout this term of office. We have the opportunity to transform the economy of NSW and the economic profile of the regions largely as a result of the State Government undertaking the commitments it has made. Funding opportunities

to regional NSW must not be watered down by classifying many areas of the state as regional when they are clearly part of metropolitan Sydney. Trust is vital in forming relationships. Trust in the government has been damaged by the State not honouring its commitment to “no forced amalgamations” in the Fit for the Future reform of Local Government.

There must be more than lip service paid to facilitating collaboration (one of the State’s commitments) and there has unfortunately been a significant loss of confidence in the government’s word and commitment to following through on its public statements. I know that many local members have been frustrated by the recent amalgamation announcements and the

damage that has done to the government’s reputation. Let’s hope that sense prevails in the end. A closing thought: Tolerance is the first principle of community; it is the spirit which conserves the best that all men think – Helen Keller.
