Forsyth Street works finished, road reopened

In just four weeks, the Forsyth Street rehabilitation works are complete. Contractors were busy sealing the surface on Friday and the section of road between Docker and Murray streets is now open to all traffic. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche praised the efforts of everyone involved who helped complete the project on schedule. “It’s taken about four weeks and now this road is reopened and ready to last another 30 years,” Mr Kausche said. “I’d like to thank not only the Council staff and contractors who helped complete these works so efficiently, but the business owners and residents for their patience and support while these important works took place. “Workers have happily committed weekends and extra time to ensure the rehabilitation project was completed as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to residents and businesses. “After working with the businesses throughout this project, it’s pleasing to see the road reopened to all traffic.” The project got under way on 15 January and in that time Council staff have also undertaken other vital works that arose such as repairs to the stormwater drainage system including a new stormwater pit, replacement of some kerb and guttering, new sewer manhole lids and a repaired driveway. Mr Kausche reminded motorists and cyclists to take care while travelling along the new section of road as the fresh surface stabilises. The road will also be monitored for loose stones on the surface and will be swept away as necessary. Historic Fitzmaurice Street ready for overhaul Fitzmaurice Street, the original business precinct of Wagga Wagga, has been through it all. Since 1849, Fitzmaurice Street

has undergone boom and bust, floods, and in recent years several major makeovers. Since its formation in the mid1800s, Fitzmaurice Street has been reconstructed multiple times to service the needs of a growing city. Initially a gravel track constructed for horse and cart

use, Fitzmaurice Street has developed over 160 years into a thick asphalt integrated pavement that services more than 5000 vehicles per day. The condition of the Fitzmaurice Street road surface between the Lagoon and Gurwood Street has slowly been deteriorating, with planned works to bring the historic

road into the future. “This section has not been resurfaced for more than 30 years,” Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said. “Due to its deteriorating condition, Council has identified this section of Fitzmaurice Street for the 2015 Asphalt Program. “Works will involve profiling and

removing the existing material, and reinstating with asphalt pavement, finished with a fine asphalt wearing surface. “The result will be a smooth, durable, robust and aesthetically pleasing surface that will service the growing city of Wagga for the next 30 years.” Works will be undertaken at

Wagga’s very successful Big Business Breakfast is on again for the seventh consecutive year. This popular business networking event on 13 March is expected to sell out once again, with Charlie Brown (pictured) to be the special guest. Charlie is one of Australia’s cutting edge commentators on innovation and technology. Freshen up your wardrobe at Museum’s Fashion Exchange

After the overwhelming support for last year’s event, the Fashion Exchange is back in 2015. The highly successful event is presented by the Museum of the Riverina at the Historic Council Chambers, with a flock of fashion lovers ready to freshen up their wardrobe on Wednesday 18 February from 6pm. More than a hundred people attended last year’s event, which encourages recycling, sharing and

social engagement. To participate in this year’s exchange, all community members need to do is bring up to five pieces they would like to swap. They will be given a button for each piece of clothing. The buttons act as currency to exchange for something “new” which has been brought along by someone else. Experienced op-shoppers Rebecca Hillis and Kirrily Welsh will be on hand to assist with outfit creations and tips

on how to get the best out of recycled clothing. Any clothing left over will be donated to local clothing charities. The Fashion Exchange is presented in conjunction with the touring exhibition, Emporium, currently on display at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site. Blues, Bushrangers ready to bowl over cricket fans at Robbo Oval Can’t get to the World Cup? Don’t worry, cricket is coming to you. From Sunday 14 February, Robertson Oval will host the Sheffield Shield clash between NSW and Victoria with free entry across the four days. councillor.hiscock@wagga.nsw.gov.au Wagga Wagga City Council is facing a number of challenges as always, and Councillors and staff are dealing with our budget on a regular basis. This is a real balancing act and we all have to remember that we are running the biggest business in the city and you as ratepayers, I see as shareholders, and in return you all want the best value for the money that you continually invest every time you pay your rates. Some of my colleagues don’t like the word business and would rather see council as providing a service and to a certain extent that is true. However, I believe that running a business provides a mindset that forces the powers that be to work harder to look at all the areas where savings can be made right across the board. In my opinion providing a service must be included in the business operations and any large business in the private sector will tell you that service and profit are the two main ingredients for being successful. Now I know that it is not possible for councils to make a profit in the running of the operations, but everybody should be working very hard to achieve the best results possible so as to meet the expectations of the community and to get our surplus into a much better position. The other problem is that councils don’t work with their own money, it’s your money and it’s easy to spend somebody else’s money. This applies to all tiers of government. I would like you to know that all Councillors are working and watching the figures intensely, and some more than others, so that we can get into a better working position. One of the difficulties for councils is the constant push from State and Federal Governments to transfer more obligations onto local government. This is called cost shifting and only adds to the difficult budget concerns that confront us all.

THE PEOPLE’S PANEL The People’s Panel ready to share their thoughts

The inaugural People’s Panel has launched, with 98 residents and community groups ready to share their Wagga view. The first consultation is about Council’s Playground Strategy, with a mix of 85 individuals and 13 groups taking part. “This is an exciting occasion for Wagga Wagga City Council and our community,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “This week has marked the start of a new conversation,

one which will see us all work together to ensure a bright future for our city. Each consultation topic runs for six weeks with a mix of forum discussion and surveys used to find out what the panellists think. “The People’s Panel will provide Council with a broad range of opinions on a number of topics over the coming months,” Cr Kendall said. “Their feedback will help inform future Council policy, plans and projects and give us a greater insight into our

community. “The level of interest we’ve received about this new concept has been very encouraging and I’m looking forward to hearing what the panel has to say.” Applications can still be made to join the panel, with the membership to be reviewed annually. Students from Humula Public School visited the Art Gallery last week as part of KaPOW! – the Kids Print Outreach Workshops. The KaPOW! program provides access to hands on activities in printmaking, engagement with the gallery’s collections, and provides access to resources for students to gain an understanding of their communities history. The school presented their artistic efforts to Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall and Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes last week. The kids have visited the gallery earlier in the program, which were followed by two intensive days of print making at Humula Public.
