Hangar to sell for $2.8M Douglas Aerospace Pty Ltd using a $2.5M loan from Wagga Wagga City Council. The company defaulted on this loan in early 2015 when it went into voluntary administration, at which point Council acquired the hangar, plant and equipment. Under the terms of the agreement Council will undertake rectification works to enable a Building Certificate to be issued. Rex will pay a Licence Fee of $20,000 per month to be rebated against the sale price The agreement will see Rex of the hangar upon completion purchase the hanger for $2.8M. of the rectification works. the land with Rex. The rectification works are estimated to take three to four months to complete at an estimated cost of between $300,000 to $400,000. Wagga Wagga City Council’s General Manager, Alan Eldridge, said the sale of the hangar to Australia’s largest independent regional airline is an outstanding outcome for the community. “Rex has proved its commitment to the Riverina time and time again with ongoing, multimillion-dollar investments that continue to play an

important role in the local economy,” Mr Eldridge said. “The expertise and financial strength that Rex brings to this deal provides certainty for the future of the hangar as an aircraft painting and refurbishing facility and its ability to generate unique job opportunities. I thank Rex for its assistance in reaching an agreement that represents value for ratepayers’ money. “This agreement came about after the elected council agreed to continue to look proactively at all potential outcomes for this facility.

This has allowed Council staff to come to an agreed sale to Rex that provides great long term benefits for the city whilst alleviating the immediate costs.” Rex Group’s Executive Chairman, Lim Kim Hai, said that Rex agreed to take on the challenge to save jobs for the community. “While aircraft painting is not core to our activities, we believe that we are in the best position to make this business viable given the substantial synergies with our heavy maintenance base is also located at Wagga Wagga airport.” Mr Lim said.

Nominees for the 2016 Wagga Wagga Australia Day Awards have been revealed ahead of the ceremony to be held on Monday 25 January. There are 10 nominees for Citizen of the Year and two for Young Citizen, along with three nominations for the prestigious Walk of Honour. No nominations that met the criteria of the award were received for the Ted Ryder Memorial Sports Award. “It’s great to see so many outstanding members of our community recognised with nomination for an award,” Wagga Wagga City Council Event Coordinator Karly Pieper said. “The Australia Day Awards are a fantastic way to honour the hard work and dedication the people of our community do to make the city a better place.” The awards ceremony is just one event during what is set to be a fun-

filled celebration of activities over the Monday and Tuesday in the city. “It will be a jam-packed couple of days,” Ms Pieper said. “There will be something for everyone, whether it be the Picnic at the Oasis, the awards on the Monday night, or enjoying the various events and activities to be held at the Wagga Beach precinct on Australia Day itself. “The upgraded beach will be the perfect backdrop for markets, a free breakfast, free amusements, the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony and entertainment for all of the family.” A full list of events for Australia Day in Wagga Wagga can be found at wagga.nsw.gov.au/australiaday.

Last chance to vote in Waggafest People's Choice

Time is running out to cast your vote in the Wagga Waggafest 365 Cups People’s Choice Award, with entries closing at 5pm on Monday 18 January. Hundreds of votes have been submitted so far, with only a handful currently separating the top three films. The $500 People’s Choice prize will be presented at Wagga’s Australia Day Awards night on 25 January at the Civic Theatre, which hosted the Waggafest Special Awards Screening Night last October. Sheraden Robins and collaborator Klutch Kable claimed the overall best film

prize at the awards night for The Wagga Wagga Sky, while the judges also awarded CSU student Thomas Parker’s Don’t Waste Wagga and Jacob Hillis-Skerry’s Blue. “There were so many great films shown at the Waggafest screening night and I know the judges had a tough time picking the winners,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “Waggafest is about celebrating our community and sharing unique stories with each other and the world. “Now it’s time for you to pick your favourite

and I encourage everyone to take some time this weekend to watch the entries and cast your vote.” You can watch all of this year’s entries online at wagga.nsw. gov.au/waggafest and have your say before voting closes on 18 January. Waggafest was created from the city brand concept that Wagga is more than just one big thing – it’s the hundred things that add up to the city being a great place to live, work and play. The Tropfest-inspired short film competition was developed by Council and celebrated its fifth year in 2015.

Fine or no fine, generosity shines The generosity of the Wagga Wagga community has been highlighted once again, with more than 50 boxes of non-perishable food items donated to the annual Food for Fines campaign. The Wagga Wagga City Library’s 2015 appeal was supported by hundreds of library members – even those who didn’t have fines to pay. “Many people donated food even though they did not have any library fines,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Of course, for those with a

guilty conscience, Food For Fines meant they could come back to the library and clear their debts, while taking the opportunity to borrow lots of books and dvds for the holidays.” All donated grocery items are collected by the Salvation Army and used to assist Wagga families during the busy and often expensive January holiday period, and sometimes well into the new year. “Feedback from the Salvation Army confirms that this campaign is highly appreciated as it helps

to restock their grocery shelves in the post-Christmas period,” Ms Campbell said. “This is a time when many people have large credit bills and the added expense of school clothes and resources for their children. “It is hard to know how many hundreds of families might benefit from this annual campaign across the year – however it is an established program that keeps on giving.” 2015 marked the 16th year of the Food For Fines campaign.

PIPPED AT THE POST: Former Olympian Geoff Huegill enjoys the finish of the 50m butterfly handicap race at the Oasis.

Huegill lights up Oasis Former Olympian Geoff Huegill made a splash at the Swimming NSW Country Regionals meet held at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre on 9 and 10 January. Wagga Wagga Swimming Club, in partnership with Council, hosted the event, with more than 200 competitors along with officials, supporters and family members flowing through the facility. There was fast-paced action in the pool, with Huegill proving popular with the crowd as he signed autographs,

posed for selfies and presented medals on the Saturday. There were a number of star performances in the pool on the day, but the biggest cheer came as Huegill dove in and took part in a 50m butterfly handicap race. Huegill took on the four fastest male and female 50m butterfly swimmers, with “Skippy” pipped by young Wagga swimmer Meg Senior. Earlier, Councillor Greg Conkey officially opened the meet, recounting his youth as a competitive swimmer.
