MAKING A SPLASH: Maria, 14 and Andrew Flaskas, 11, enjoy getting their feet wet at Wagga Beach as part of the Wagga Wagga Australia Day celebrations.

A splash of Aussie spirit

Thousands flock to Wagga Beach to celebrate Australia Day in Wagga Wagga Switching grass to sand proved to be a resounding success for this year’s Wagga Wagga Australia Day celebrations.

Thousands of residents flocked to Wagga Beach on Tuesday to celebrate our nation’s patriotic day. “The Wagga Beach offers such an iconic Australian mix of water, sand and sunshine,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Event Coordinator Karly Pieper said. “The Victory Memorial Garden has been

a great location for previous Australia Day celebrations, but with the newly revamped Wagga Beach proving to be popular with so many residents, we thought it would be a perfect location for the Australia Day festivities. “Given the great turnout on the day, we think residents must have agreed.” As well as making the most of the great location, locals were up early to enjoy a free community breakfast which kept the Kooringal Rotary Club members busy, cooking more than 5000 sausages. The day will also be remembered for an extra special reason for 23 residents who

received their Australian citizenship. The city’s newest citizens came from eight countries, including Afghanistan, China, Iran, Ireland, India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall welcomed each of the newest citizens. “To our new citizens, my heartfelt congratulations to you on this important occasion – I’m delighted to warmly greet you as fellow Australians,” he said. “I trust that your time in Wagga Wagga will be memorable, and that your life in Australia will be full of peace, prosperity and

happiness.” Market stalls, free entertainment and amusements and Charlie the Council engagement truck kept residents entertained well into the day. “Australia Day is a day to be proud of who we are as a nation and to come together as a community. This was certainly the case for the 2016 Wagga celebrations,” Ms Pieper said.

Our finest citizens honoured A mental health advocate, a rural medical campaigner and a dedicated educator and sportsman received Wagga’s top honours at the Australia Day Awards on Monday evening. Professional sportsperson turned youth worker and charity campaigner Joe Williams was named Wagga’s 2016 Citizen of the Year at the official ceremony at the Civic Theatre. Medical student Hannah Kempton was recognised as Young Citizen of the Year for her positive promotion of rural medicine. The newest Walk of Honour inductee was teacher and sportsman John Brasier. Mr Williams was recognised for his work to inspire youths and individuals through motivational speaking workshops, raising awareness of mental health struggles, and for regularly dedicating time to support

community groups and notfor-profit organisations. Mr Williams’ Indigenous heritage is at the forefront of much of his work. He drew on this and other personal experiences during his acceptance speech at Monday night’s ceremony. “You see, I am one of the lucky ones. I've had great guidance from my parents and an education that allows me to string a few words together, allows me to deliver a message, provide a platform to open discussions and intelligent conversations,” he said. “I say to many people, ‘the past is the past and we cannot go back, we can only learn from it’. The biggest question is, are we learning in this community? For the most part, yes I believe we are. We still see and hear comments that are degrading but still we are moving forward as a town, as a community and also as a country.”

Medical student Hannah Kempton was recognised for her positive community contribution through rural health. Ms Kempton cofounded the ‘Eye’s Wide Open’ mentoring program for rural health students. Mr Brasier was an outstanding teacher and sportsman who spent many tireless hours working for junior sport and was heavily involved with the Wagga Harness Racing Club and Senior Cricket. He also passionately worked for students to have equal opportunities. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall congratulated all recipients for their personal and community contributions. “Wagga is lucky to have such a great mix of diverse and influential individuals. I congratulate the three honoured in our Australia Day Awards,” Cr Kendall said.

AWARD WINNERS: (above left) Ellen Brasier accepted the Walk of Honour inductee award on behalf of the late John Brasier, Citizen of the Year Joe Williams, Mayor Rod Kendall, Young Citizen of the Year Hannah Kempton, Australia Day Ambassador Jarryd Byrne and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack. RECOGNISED: (above) Citizen of the Year Joe Williams. FAN FAVOURITE: Karnie Spalding (centre) was the lucky winner of Wagga Waggafest 365 Cups People’s Choice Award. Karnie was presented the award, which includes $500 prize money, for her short film Rockyroad at the Australia Day Awards on Monday evening. Waggafest was created from the city brand concept that Wagga is more than just one big thing – it’s the hundred things that add up to the city being a great place to live, work and play.

Brumbies and Tahs to do battle Wagga Wagga might be in NSW, but make no mistake – this is Brumbies country. The ACT team will ride into the city next week for the Super Rugby pre-season blockbuster against cross-border rivals the Waratahs. The 6 February clash at McDonald’s Park will take place just three weeks before the Brumbies start the season proper and is just one of two trial matches for the club. Kicking off a weekend of footy fun will be a Brumbies in the Bush dinner on Friday 5 February featuring Alan Jones, Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage and Governor of NSW David Hurley – plus the Brumbies team. The ACT club will also be at Bolton Park on Saturday morning from 9am to 10am for “Breakfast with the Brumbies”. A win in Wagga would be the perfect start to another big year for the Brumbies, who have been a part of the Super Rugby

finals series the past three seasons, making the grand final in 2013 and the preliminary final in 2014 and 2015. “I don’t think the goal changes from year to year, we’re always here to win the competition,” Brumbies backrower Scott Fardy said “We’re disappointed we’ve fallen at the final hurdle the last few years but obviously we take a lot of confidence in the fact we believe our best footy is ahead of us and we’re looking forward to a big year.” The line-ups of both teams are yet to be finalised, but rugby fans have been drooling over the possibility of seeing players like David Pocock, Joe Tomane and Stephen Moore taking on the likes of Israel Folau, Kurtley Beale and Michael Hooper. Tickets for the Brumbies v Waratahs trial game are on sale now at Hunters (68 Fitzmaurice Street) or Sportsmans Warehouse (34 Baylis Street) as well as online at eventopia.co and at the gate.

Councillor Column

Over recent months some significant events have taken place. Firstly, the recommendations of the independent review of loan

arrangements between Council and Douglas Aerospace was released. Despite the best of intentions of Councillors and staff to provide development and growth opportunities for our economy at the airport, the project exposed a number of serious shortcomings in Council capacity and processes. As some have said, Councillors must take responsibility for the resources that were placed

councillor.poynter@wagga.nsw.gov.au at risk and address these issues. Community members can be assured that we are and have been. Since the problems came to our attention, we have been working to correct any structural deficiencies, and preserve and protect community resources. The independent report was an important part of the process that allowed us to do this, as was the second big event, the sale of the hangar to REX. This sale has allowed

us to recoup a significant amount of community resources that were expended on this project. The sale is a good outcome, achieved in the face of hardball negotiation tactics by senior REX management that included public announcements that we had broken legal agreements with them. They were focused on getting the best deal they could for their business, but it was important to resist that pressure and I think the final
