CCTV rolls out across Kids invited to draw their best Wagga Wagga’s CBD Three levels of Government and community combine to fund safety project Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) installation is well under way, with Wagga Wagga City Council contractors working their way south from Fitzmaurice Street.
The works began on 6 January with rodding and roping taking place ahead of the first fibre being pulled through on 8 January by Wagga Wagga City Council Director Corporate Services Craig Richardson, Councillor Yvonne Braid, Member for Riverina Michael McCormack and Committee 4 Wagga Chairperson Judy Galloway. Mr Richardson said Council has worked hard in the lead up to ensure the most appropriate system is installed. “This is a purpose-built system and the presence of CCTV can have a deterrent effect on crime
and antisocial behaviour within the CBD, while contributing to a greater sense of safety in the community. “This $1,080,000 project is a combined effort with all three levels of government contributing funding, along with Committee 4 Wagga. “Council has also worked closely with NSW Police to ensure the right system is being installed. “The system is expected to be fully operational by early April 2015.” There will be minimal disruption to businesses along Fitzmaurice Street, Baylis Street and Station Place over the course of the works, and pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times. Safety barriers will also be used along the footpath during the installation to ensure pedestrian safety. Traffic control measures are also expected to be installed but not at the expense of reducing available car parking.
Wagga Waggafest organisers are calling on the community’s kids to help make the short film competition’s fifth year the best yet. Waggafest is the perfect platform for people to share their unique stories on what makes Wagga a great city to live, work and play. This year, kids will get the opportunity to have elements of their drawings featured on the Waggafest artwork and promotional material. A Waggafest 2015 “Draw Your Best…” Kids Drawing Studio will be set up on the main stage at Wagga Wagga City Council’s Australia Day celebrations on Sunday 25 January in the Victory Memorial Gardens from 9am to 2pm. Kids will have the opportunity to draw what they think is the best – something they love about Wagga, their favourite animal or anything that inspires them to put pencil to paper. Those drawings will then be incorporated into the Waggafest 2015 promotional material. Since it began in 2011, Waggafest has fostered and cultivated talent from across Wagga and the world. However, festival organisers believe “the best is yet to come” for the festival, which is why Wagga’s kids have been included in the design process. Kids can contribute to the “Draw Your Best…” campaign on the main stage at the Victory Memorial Gardens from 9am to 2pm on 25 January.

Excitement is building and the votes are being counted for the Wagga Waggafest 2014 People’s Choice Award. The judges of the Tropfestinspired competition selected Murwillumbah-based Sheraden Robins’ A Wagga Wagga Winter Tale for the Hume Bank Best Film award at last October’s awards night, but now it’s the community’s turn to pick their favourite. The entry that receives the most votes will win $500 and be screened as part of the 2015 Australia Day Movies in the Park celebrations on 25 January. A selection of the best Waggafest entries over the festival’s history will also be shown at Movies in
the Park, along with Happy Feet 2. Each year, Waggafest calls for filmmakers to submit a two to four minute film that tells a unique Wagga story, focusing on a particular theme. The festival has gone from strength to strength and in recent years has been awarded the Best Marketing/Public Relations Campaign at the National Government Communications Awards and the RH Dougherty Award for Excellence in Communications by Local Government NSW. councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au In this holiday period, we should all spare a thought and give thanks to the emergency s e r v i c e s volunteers in our community, including but not limited to the SES and RFS. These volunteers regularly give up their precious time for the benefit of us all. The time that they sacrifice is no more precious than in the holiday season. During this period they are often called upon to put themselves into the path of danger during storms, fire and at accident sites all for the benefit of people who are often unknown to them. To these very special people, I give you all my heartfelt thanks for your sacrifice and all you continue to do within our community. Volunteering is an important part of the community. It is through the efforts of volunteers that our lifestyle and our community are enhanced. Volunteers not only work in emergency services, but also are the mainstay of most sporting and cultural clubs, provide care for those in need, help out in classrooms, undertake mentoring and do many, many other valuable roles, which all improve our lives. As we sit back and contemplate our lives and the community in which we live, I ask that we each think of how we can do a little bit to make both our lives and community better by volunteering in some form in 2015. Finally, as we welcome 2015, I would like to thank my fellow Councillors, the staff of WWCC and all residents of this wonderful city for their support and words of encouragement and advice throughout 2014. Council is initially looking for 50 to 60 people who best represent the diverse and vibrant Wagga community, and any applicants who aren’t selected for the panel will be placed on a waiting list. Councillor Column The three big issues to face Wagga Wagga City Council (and for that matter Local Government generally) in the decades ahead will be: water, rubbish and energy. Water is a precious resource and cannot be wasted. We can no longer afford to have all our rubbish go to landfill, and increasing energy bills need to be slashed and hopefully eliminated.
Much has already been done. Some of our waste water is being recycled, along with much of our rubbish, and energy-saving schemes are in place including solar panels on Council’s depot building and at the Livestock Marketing Centre. A cogeneration plant has been installed at the Oasis, which is also reducing the City’s energy

needs. Late last year, Council went a step further. Money from the expected savings from a new energy agreement will be used to fund a renewable energy project, which is likely to be a solar energy farm. Around $300,000 will be spent on such a facility over the next
three years. The need for such a project is obvious. WWCC’s energy bill in 2013/2014 was $2.8m and if nothing is done, this is expected to rise to $4.8m in just five years. My dream is to eliminate that cost altogether and sell surplus energy at a discounted rate to new
industries seeking to establish in the area. A pipe dream? Maybe, but a goal needs to be set. It’s a legacy this Council can hopefully leave for future generations.

Food for Fines fetching a fantastic haul
There is still time to donate to Wagga Wagga City Library’s charitable Christmas initiative The Salvation Army has collected 25 boxes brimming with donations from Wagga Wagga City Library’s Food For Fines campaign. This is the 15th year the Library has conducted Food For Fines, which helps restock the Salvation Army’s supplies after the busy Christmas period. “Last year, two ute-loads of food were handed over to the Salvos and we’re on track to match that donation this year,” Acting Library Manager Christine Bolton said. “Over the past 15 years, Food For Fines has helped so many people in our community and the support for this year’s donation drive has been amazing. “The campaign is also an opportunity for Council to
give back as it forfeits the money from library overdue fees.” If you’ve got overdue loans at the Library, or are just feeling generous, then don’t worry – Food For Fines runs until January 31. “There’s still plenty of time to donate your nonperishable food items at the Library,” Ms Bolton said. “Some really helpful items are beans, cereals, biscuits, pasta and tinned meals. “Every branch of the Riverina Regional Library has been involved in Food For Fines since 2004, which means this great initiative is lending a hand to those in need across the region.” To donate to Food For Fines, simply bring your donations to the Library.

Let your creativity shine at the gallery
Try your hand at weaving this school holidays at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. From 10am until 2pm on Saturday 17 January, come into the Gallery to take part in WEave100. The ambitious project’s aim is to create a thousand stars for an art installation that celebrates peace during April 2015. The heart of this project is about creating a fun and safe space for people to weave a star and be part of this conversation of ending all forms of violence. Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is part of the 100 communities involved in creating stars for the 1 Million Stars to End Violence campaign coordinated by Maryann Talia Pau. This international weaving project aims to end violence by bringing people together to weave stars. Bookings are not required, and all visitors are welcome to drop in at any time. Further WEave100 starmaking days will also take place on Saturday 14 February and Saturday 14 March. Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s Family Fun Days are free for all participants.

EXHIBITION - LAMPE AVENUE ROAD BOUNDARY CHANGES
Council hereby gives public notice pursuant to the Roads Act 1993 (Section 19) of proposed road boundary changes to Lampe Avenue Wagga Wagga (bordered by Simmons Street and Trail Street). The purpose of the proposed road boundary changes is to formalise the existing physical layout of the road following construction works a number of years ago. Council invites public submissions on the proposed road boundary changes, to be lodged within the exhibition period. Inspection Venue: The proposed road boundary changes and associated survey plan is available for review at Wagga Wagga City Council, Cnr Baylis & Morrow Sts, Wagga Wagga, during the hours of 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (public holidays excluded) within the above exhibition period. Submission Procedure: Persons wishing to make a submission in relation to the proposed road boundary changes should do so prior to the close of the exhibition period. Submissions should be in writing and may be delivered to Wagga Wagga City Council or mailed to the General Manager, Wagga Wagga City Council, PO Box 20, Wagga Wagga, NSW 2650 or emailed to council@wagga.nsw.gov.au Persons making written submissions regarding the above proposed road boundary changes are advised that any submission received within the submission period will be subject to the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 and the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPPA) and may be attached to the final report, in its entirety or in part, to Council unless explicitly requested by the person making the submission that they do not wish this to occur.
