Uranquinty’s kitchen rules New kitchen for Neighbourhood Centre

RENOVATED: Uranquinty Neighbourhood Centre secretary Sue O’Brien (second from left) and Council’s Director Environment and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes, take a look at the centre’s new kitchen with Origin Energy’s senior community relations business partner Amanda Robinson (left) and Uranquinty power station plant manager Paul Olsen.

Wagga Wagga City Council and Origin Energy have teamed up for a $12,000 project to install a new kitchen in the Uranquinty Neighbourhood Centre. The Neighbourhood Centre is home to Uranquinty’s only

preschool and hosts a range of other social and recreational activities. Importantly, the Neighbourhood Centre also acts as a community evacuation centre during emergencies. Centre secretary Sue O’Brien

said the new kitchen will be a massive boost for the community. “The old kitchen was very small, it was half the size of what it is now and not very user-friendly,” she said.

Wagga ready to celebrate It will be a jampacked long weekend of fun and celebration when the Wagga Wagga community comes together to mark Australia Day.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Event Coordinator, Karly Pieper, said there will

be something for everyone over the three days. “Australia Day is a time to celebrate our nation and our city; and to recognise those people who help make Wagga great,” Ms Pieper said. “The Australia Day Awards give us the chance to honour the often unsung heroes of our community.” The awards are just one part of what is sure to be a fun-filled weekend, which begins with a picnic at the Oasis on Saturday 24 January and ends with more

celebrations on Australia Day itself. The awards ceremony and concert will be held at the Civic Theatre, with local talent from across the city to entertain the crowd. “The concert will feature performances by the Australian Army Band Kapooka’s Rock Band, Mount Austin High School Hip Hop Dancers, the National Anthem Competition finalists, Dale Allison and Hayley Potts,” Ms Pieper said. “Sunday will also be a huge day of celebrations, starting with Markets in

the Park from 9am and ending with the Beyond Bank Movies in the Park from 6.30pm.” The Wagga Waggafest People’s Choice award will also be announced at Movies in the Park. Along with the winning film, a collection of the best of Waggafest will be shown. The Beyond Bank Movies in the Park will also feature Happy Feet 2, which is one of many films Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador Damian Candusso, an international multi-award winning Sound

Designer, has worked on. Rounding out the long weekend will be the 2WG Australia Day Breakfast, Citizenship Ceremony and the Star FM talent quest on 26 January. A full list of events for Australia Day in Wagga Wagga can be found at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/australiaday. See public notices for Council services and facilities hours over the long weekend.

Uranquinty’s kitchen rules

Continued from page 1 “We hire the centre out for functions and with the new kitchen there will be a lot more interest. “Playgroup is also here every Tuesday and preschool runs three days a week.” Along with increasing its ability to host community events, the new kitchen will make the centre better equipped during emergencies. “This collaborative relationship between the Uranquinty community, Origin Energy and Council is a great example of the way rural and regional communities can work together to strengthen community assets,” Council’s Director Environment and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes, said. “We are pleased to be able to support a project like this that benefits everyone living and working in the Uranquinty area and helps achieve the Uranquinty community’s goal to become more resilient and prepared for emergency response in the future.” Origin Energy has also agreed to fund the production and installation of an emergency notice board outside the Uranquinty Neighbourhood Centre which will be used to post community information during emergencies. Paul Olsen, Plant Manager at Origin’s Uranquinty Power Station, said Origin was COMMUNITY ART: Artist Kyle Pearson and street art workshop participant Rebecca Costello start creating the design for delighted to be involved. “The community has clearly identified this as the Ashmont skate park. a priority project and we are only too pleased to help make it happen,” Mr Olsen said. “I’m sure the pre-schoolers will also be looking forward to creating some delicious concoctions in their brand new kitchen.”

Community combines for skate park public art

The community has helped design and create artwork at the Ashmont skate park during a street art workshop last week. Local artists Kyle Pearson and Thom Patton were successful in their submission as part of the Public Art Plan to run the workshop and give the recently unveiled Webb Park skate park a bold new look. Mr Patton said the four-day workshop attracted participants from ages 10 to 24 and helped develop the young artists’ skills. “We started out with concept design

and had the young people involved sketch out things they’re into or like to draw as a way to assess where they were up to in terms of skills,” he said. “We then took those designs and made screen print designs for shirts and paper prints. “We came up with a design for the skate park that combined what the guys at the workshop created.” Participant Rebecca Costello said the workshop was a chance to learn more about street art. “I’ve gained some more art skills and

I’ve enjoyed spending some time with the community,” the 20-year-old said. Mr Pearson said as an artist he has enjoyed seeing the participants’ skill levels increase throughout the workshop. “Taking the ideas the kids have had and working with them, then getting to the stage where we’re applying it and seeing their ideas take shape has been really rewarding.” Another workshop is scheduled for 15-17 April at Harris Park as part of Youth Week.

CCTV installation Week 4 works

Due to the recent weather, work has begun in Baylis Street, working under the cover of the shop verandas. When weather permits, work will be undertaken in Fitzmaurice Street. The works being undertaken are open excavation and the installation of conduits and/or pits; underboring and the installation of conduits; and continued installation of draw wires and pulling of fibre optic cable. Councillor Column

As Wagga welcomes in the new year, many challenges continue to face the community in an economic climate that continues to drag the chain for improved prosperity. State Government elections in March, Council mergers, funding concerns, rising costs and so on and so on. Recently we read that Wagga’s population did not exceed some other growing regions and there was some talk that Council was to blame. The fact is that Council does not measure these things and in hindsight we probably should. Furthermore I believe we should be identifying key goals for our Council that incorporate targets like growth in population, jobs and the like. I am a big believer in government delivering its essentials, but at the same time they need to provide a vision which targets agreed goals and objectives. Sadly this is not reality. In the coming months we will hear from candidates in the state election. It is their time to talk about a vision for the bush and for our region. Good luck to all candidates. Just like in the corporate world where CEOs and GMs have a limited life, so should politicians. Wagga and our region need a fresh set of eyes and a passionate approach to our many issues and – of course – innovative solutions. Have a prosperous Wagga new year.

Councillor Andrew Negline

Remember those fantastic outdoor shows like Wind in the Willows and Toad of Toad Hall played to huge audiences at the Wollundry Lagoon a few years back? Well, get your picnic rug or camping chair for The Lizard of Oz – a hilarious new outdoor show for kids and families on show now at the lagoon. Directed by Peter Cox and Mark Grentell of Backyard Ashes fame and featuring original songs by Peter J Casey, this is a show that will entertain all ages. The Lizard of Oz will be staged outdoors at the Wollundry Amphitheatre and open as part of the 2015 Australia Day weekend festivities. The show features an allstar Wagga cast, with some of the city’s finest performers and crew returning from the capital cities to perform, including Jamie Way, Karla Hillam, Michelle Brasier, Jacqui Irvine and Andrew Strano.

OFF TO SEE THE LIZARD: Dodo the blue heeler, Katrina Pavlova and Dotty explore the town of Wiggle Waggle in the Lizard of Oz. Along with songs composed by the awardwinning songwriter Mr Casey, who now lives in Wagga, the show also features the puppetry and costume building skills of the nationally renowned Aaron Dosiak (Erth, Dinosaurs Petting Zoo, I, Bunyip, Star

Wars Burlesque). The Lizard of Oz tells the story of Dotty, who ends up in a town called Wiggle Waggle after being caught up in Cyclone Matilda. Dotty and her blue heeler Dodo meet many colourful characters along the way to see the

Lizard for help, along with the story’s villain – Arachna the redback spider. The show began on 23 January and will be running until 8 February. Visit www. wagga.nsw.gov,au/civictheatre for more details and to buy tickets.

Meet Bugs This week’s pet of the week is ‘Bugs’, a young female wolfhoundcross. Bugs has a beautiful, affectionate and loving nature. She is extremely playful and would make a great addition to a family with land or a large yard with good fences. Being a bigger dog, Bugs would need regular exercising and plenty of attention, plus a bit of interaction with other dogs to keep her socialised. Bugs can be adopted for $314.45, which includes vaccinations, desexing, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check.

You can meet Bugs and her friends at Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday, 1pm to 4.15pm. For further information, contact the friendly Animal Management Rangers on 6971 4651 or visit www.rescuerex.webs.com. Tip of the Week: Do you know where your cat is? If your cat is allowed to roam you are required to make sure that it is not causing a nuisance in the neighbourhood. As a responsible cat owner, Council suggests that you bring your cat in at night or have a cat run in the yard so it has a safe place to explore. cover charge.
