Boxer’s story knocks out Waggafest 2014 People’s Choice award
Wagga Waggafest was in the spotlight over the Australia Day long weekend, with the 2014 People’s Choice winner announced and a special activity held for the 2015 festival. Taking out the $500 People’s Choice prize by just 15 votes was The Enemy Within, the story of Wagga’s world champion boxer and former NRL player Joe Williams.
The award attracted 887 votes from the public, with Kobe’s Crisis by Kooringal Public School finishing as runner-up. Meanwhile, more than a hundred kids from Wagga and across the region drew their best for Waggafest during Markets in the Park at the Victory Memorial Gardens. The community’s kids were called on to
help make the fifth year of the Tropfestinspired competition the best yet. Kids drew what they thought was the best – whether it was something they loved about Wagga or their favourite sport. Elements of those drawings will then be incorporated into the Waggafest 2015 artwork and promotional material.
Later that night, the People’s Choice winner was announced at Movies in the Park. Mr Williams was on hand to accept the award with the Mayfly Media team. Mr Williams used ochre, rubbing it on to his head, ears and eyes to emphasise that as a community we must “use our heads” to acknowledge people who suffer from depression, listen to them and be on the

Brumbies on exhibition The lines have been marked and the final touches made – now it’s time for kick off.
Wagga Wagga City Council staff have been hard at work this week preparing McDonald’s Park for the Super Rugby trial match between the Brumbies and the Highlanders. In what is set to be a treat for rugby union fans across the city and the Riverina, the ACT side will test out the upgraded ground and facilities ahead of the City-Country rugby league match in May. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall said the clash was the
first of two trial matches, with the Brumbies to return in 2016. “The game is the first taste of Super Rugby in Wagga for nearly a decade and marks the culmination of months of hard work by Council, Southern Inland Rugby Union and ACT & Southern NSW Rugby Union,” Councillor Kendall said. “Securing these trial games is a great coup for Wagga and for the wider Riverina.” Cr Kendall said games like the Super Rugby trial match were a great way to keep Wagga on the sporting map. “We live in the City of Good Sports and kids coming to watch this trial game could be the next generation of stars that Wagga produces,” he

The Forsyth Street rehabilitation works have reached the halfway point and are progressing well. The works are taking place between Docker and Murray streets as part of Council’s ongoing pavement rehabilitation program. “Staff are approximately halfway through the rehabilitation process and aim to seal the road in midFebruary, weather permitting,” Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said. “Council is very appreciative of the patience being shown by the residents and local businesses and are working long hours on consecutive days to complete this project as quickly as possible.” The existing pavement material, which underlays the road surface, did not meet
design standards and required removal and replacement with a more suitable material to ensure the integrity of the roadway into the future. The existing subgrade, which underlays the pavement, has also been strengthened to support the new pavement, by mixing lime through the subgrade. Some sections of kerband-gutter and stormwater infrastructure are also being replaced as part of the works. “The program for this particular Council work crew is mainly focused in the urban area over the next 12 months and we will be working very hard with local residents and businesses to minimise disruption while these necessary road reconstruction projects are carried out,” Mr Kausche said.

been re-used to resheet East Street in North Wagga.
Australia Day 2015 in Wagga
Thousands of residents and visitors celebrated Australia Day in Wagga Wagga over the long weekend. From the Australia Day Awards and concert to the Movies in the Park, there was something for everyone. Other highlights included the Markets in the Park and the picnic at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre. A citizenship ceremony was also held on Australia Day, with 31 citizens from 11 countries officially making Wagga and Australia their new home.

Motorists reminded to take care in school zones
With their shoes shined and lunches packed, thousands of Wagga Wagga kids have headed back to school for 2015 this week. Wagga Wagga City Council is reminding motorists to slow down to 40km/h in school
zones between 8am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm on all gazetted school days. A vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at
40km/h, which is why school zone speed limits are so important. All schools have prominent signs and road markings telling drivers that kids are about and they need to slow down.
Motorists can download the Speed Adviser App, which uses audio alerts to inform drivers of operating school zones and if they exceed the speed limit.

People power to combat littering motorists
Litter bugs beware – you’re being watched. Last week the NSW EPA announced an initiative that further supports local efforts to reduce litter in our environment. Wagga Wagga City Council was successful in receiving funding through the NSW EPA’s Hey Tosser! campaign in 2014. This project provides residents with the information and tools to make reports of littering offences, which previously only resulted in a warning. As a result of the new EPA litter reporting system, fines for littering from vehicles can be issued based on reports from the public for the first time in NSW. The new rules come into effect on Sunday March 1, which is also Clean Up Australia Day. “People are less likely to litter when they think someone may be watching them,” Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said. “With more eyes on the lookout hopefully litterers will think twice before tossing rubbish out of the car window. “Many residents feel frustrated when they see others disrespecting our city and environment when they litter. This is an opportunity for the public to take action against this poor behaviour.” All reports will be verified before a fine is issued, and reporters may need to provide evidence in court. Reports must be made within 14 days of the incident and include important information. However, the initiative is not about creating a “people’s court” and there’s a simple message – don’t litter from your car and you have nothing to worry about.
“Litter doesn’t simply go away when it is thrown out the car window,” Ms Kent said. “Money is spent to clean roadways, stormwater drains and pollutant traps where litter from cars frequently ends up. “Many volunteer hours are spent on community clean up events such as Clean Up Australia Day and Clean Up Wagga Day.” The new reporting system will start on 1 February, with the issuing of fines to start the following month. Residents can use the EPA website, www.epa.nsw.gov.au/ litter, or the EPA mobile app to report littering motorists. Council staff were thrilled when they were lent a helping hand at Wagga Beach on Tuesday morning. Ready to tidy up rubbish after a long weekend of Australia Day celebrations, staff were offered assistance by three Army personnel who were at the beach to train. Noticing the amount of rubbish, the trio joined in and helped clean up the beach area. The staff would like to offer their sincere thanks to the two permanent and one reserve member of the Army who selflessly gave their time.

We have some enormous projects in store for 2015 – a quick snapshot is the MPS Stadium at Equex, upgrade of Bolton Park Stadium, RiFL freight hub and the levee upgrade. We also have many critical infrastructure requirements and sporting and social projects in planning phase as well. A few examples are the Livestock Marketing
Centre (LMC) upgrade at Bomen, Equex facilities, Lake Albert, Pomingalarna cycling complex, city water management, parking facilities etc. While we must have a vision for the future, we must also have a manageable, fiscally responsible plan. We must determine between our ‘wants’ and our ‘needs’. To put this in perspective, the projects in the first paragraph will cost the ratepayer an estimated $60-70 million. We have just experienced a $13.6m operational loss, State Government cost shifting is costing $3.4m/annum and Federal cancelation of grants will grow into a couple of million/annum. We have a growing backlog of infrastructure maintenance

Some within the organisation are not happy with the capping of rates, therefore implying their desire to charge more. Council often comes under fire from external groups stating what our agenda should be. Unfortunately, while these demands are well meant and have merit, they don’t always see the complete picture. That said, many of the projects are visionary and we must have a plan for the future. It comes back to wants vs needs. I have often asked, do we have an income problem or a spending problem? Over time

I have come to the conclusion we have a spending problem that has been exacerbated by State cost shifting. I believe it is time for us to make some tough and probably unpopular decisions for a few years and get back to a position of sustainability. As one of the elected body, I believe we must deliver the ‘needs’ of the community, and then deliver ‘wants’ while being fiscally responsible. It is the input and commitment from the community as to why I believe Wagga to be a city of progress and why it will continue to surpass other regional centres be the best place to live.

Act FAST and you could save your life – that’s the message from the National Stroke Foundation to Wagga Wagga residents. The foundation has chosen Wagga Wagga and Warrnambool to take part in its FAST pilot program, as they are both major regional centres that have a stroke unit delivering specialist stroke care. As part of the project, the foundation has sent out FAST presentation toolkits to 170 community organisations, local business and medical practices in Wagga Wagga. National Stroke Foundation CEO Dr Erin Lalor said stroke is one of Australia’s most lethal killers and requires urgent medical attention, but most people don’t know what a stroke looks like. “The symptoms associated with stroke can often be confused with fatigue,” Dr Lalor said. “These include weakness in the arms, slurred speech or trouble standing. “Unfortunately, most people don’t know this and sadly many people go and have a nap instead of calling an ambulance – which is the worst thing you can do because lying down and going to sleep can prove fatal.
