Be a pawfect pooch owner

Make no bones about it, dogs love nothing more than having the freedom to run while out with their owners in the big wide world. Walking a pooch has great exercise and wellbeing benefits, for owners and their best friend, however, letting dogs roam in public places can pose problems. Unrestrained dogs have the potential to harass or annoy members of the public, or be involved in an attack with another dog, and can create a mess if left to urinate or defecate on public property. WALKIES: If you’re a dog owner make sure you restrain your dog when enjoying the Wagga Beach precinct, just like Odin with his owner Council's Rob Sharpe.

Give your group a boost $175,000 in Council funding available for community projects Local community organisations, groups and individuals can soon apply for a share of $175,000 as part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s Annual Grants Program 2016/17.

Seventy-one worthy recipients received a boost through last year’s program, making important projects like self-defence classes for high

school students and a skate area at North Wagga possible. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said funding applications can be made from Monday 21 March across six categories for community-focused groups and individuals in the Local Government Area. “These grants are part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s commitment to developing our vibrant and diverse community,” he said. “Through the grants program, Council supports a wide range of

services and activities that build community capacity, foster social networks and information exchange, facilitate cooperation and build on existing community strengths.” The 2015/16 program generated a wealth of interest from the community, with a 52 per cent increase in applications compared to the 2014/15 program. Council will again be holding information sessions to help groups and individuals develop and submit their applications. Story continued inside

Honour for Wagga resident Norma Male OAM was rewarded for 30 years of dedication and work in Local Government with a Local Government NSW Lifetime Achievement Award. The 100-year-old was presented with the award by Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout (left)

and Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire (right). Miss Male worked at both Cootamundra and Balranald Municipal Councils. In 1944 she was appointed Balranald Town Clerk, making her the first female town clerk in NSW and possibly the first in Australia.

Despite the prolonged hot autumn weather the water quality in Lake Albert remains ripe for recreational activities. There have been outbreaks of blue green algae in some waterways across the Riverina and Murray regions, but so far Lake Albert remains in reasonably good health. Water quality readings are currently at amber (no restrictions but increased sampling) for blue green algae and medium for bacteria levels, so it’s important to keep a close eye on the lake. “There is still a chance that blue green algae could still form so staff are currently testing the water on a weekly basis, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that nature is kind to us and the water quality remains suitable

Put Wagga in focus with Sister City competition

If you’re a budding photographer or have taken a spectacular photo of Wagga, then consider entering the Sister City photo competition. Give it Your Best Shot is a competition to showcase what is truly great about Wagga to our Sister City friends in Kunming, China. “Grab your camera or smartphone and start snapping – think Lake Albert sunsets, the Murrumbidgee River, rolling paddocks or the vibrancy of our suburbs and neighbourhoods,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall said. “The competition is looking for photographs to give the people

of Wagga’s Chinese sister-city Kunming a glimpse of the local landscapes, customs and culture that make Wagga unique.” Give it Your Best Shot is designed to strengthen ties between Wagga Wagga and Kunming, as well as eight other Australia-southwest China sister-city pairs. Shortlisted photographers from Wagga will be invited to have their works displayed in Kunming at a community exhibition. One grand prize winner from Australia and one from southwest China will win flights, accommodation and a week of activities in their Sister City so

they can experience it firsthand. Runners up will win return flights between Australia and southwest China. To enter, submit photos online via the Sister City website, sistercitycompetition.com.au. Entries are open from 14 March to 14 April. Wagga entrants must be 18 years or older Wagga residents and Australia citizens who hold a vaild passport with more than six months validity from December 2016. Full list of terms and conditions available on the website. The competition is an initiative of the Australian Consulate-General in Chengdu.

Triple J favourite to play National Youth Week event Fresh off being named Triple J’s Unearthed Artist of the Year, Perth’s Tired Lion will be playing two gigs for Wagga’s National Youth Week concert Press Play. Along with the J Award win in 2015, the four piece mashed up Violent Soho and the Smashing Pumpkins for the radio station’s Like a Version segment in May and opened Splendour in the Grass in July. Tired Lion will be joined by Melbourne folk rock outfit Creature Fear for two shows at the Home Tavern on Saturday 16 April as part of Press Play – an all ages, drug and alcohol free gig at 2pm and an 18 years and over show from 8pm. With more than a fifth of Wagga’s population aged between 12 and 25 years, Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said National Youth Week was an important event for the community. “The City of Wagga Wagga is excited to support and celebrate the enormous contribution that young people make to our city in so many ways,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Through education, sport, music, art and other forms of performance, volunteering,

Meet Shorty Big things come in small packages, just like the aptly named Shorty. The pet of the week is a white male fox terrier pup with tan on his head. Shorty is about 12 weeks old and would suit a young family so he can and the kids can grow up together. He’s just like any other puppy who likes lots of cuddles and play time.

You can adopt Shorty from Glenfield Road Animal Shelter for $262.40. This includes microchipping, lifetime registration, first vaccination, de sexing and worming. If you would like to meet Shorty or any of his buddies, visit the shelter from Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4.15pm. For more information, visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/animals or call 6971 4651.

could lead to a dangerous situation or attack,” Mr Minehan said. “Keeping dogs on a lead while out and about helps removes this risk. “It also helps owners notice when their animal is doing its business, which can be cleaned up straight away and not left to make a mess for other park or beach-users or for Council staff to clean up.” Under the Companion Animals Act 1998 having unrestrained dogs in public places, which are not dedicated off-leash areas, is an offence and may result in the dog being seized, and or penalty notices issued. The Act also outlines that owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dog when in a public place. The penalty for not picking up after your dog is a $275 fine. Wagga has six off-leash dog areas, including a fully enclosed agility track. A map of the areas is available at wagga.nsw.gov.au/animals, along with more information on dogs in public places. Informative signage is also on display at Wagga Beach, or contact Council's Regulatory Services Division on 1300 292 442.

Dog owners reminded to be responsible

From Front Page Making sure dogs are restrained in non off-leash areas and cleaning up after the animal while in public is the responsibility of the pet owner. Council’s Commercial and Economic Development Strategic Officer and dog owner Rob Sharpe said it’s important to remember popular dog-walking spots like Wagga Beach and other public places are for everyone to enjoy. “Recent upgrades at the Wagga Beach have increased the popularity of the space,” Mr Sharpe said. “Dog owners and their dogs are more than welcome at the precinct; however, they must be mindful of all beach-goers. “The easiest way to enjoy the beach or any other public place with your dog is to make sure it’s restrained.” Council’s Manager Regulatory Services Greg Minehan said unrestrained dogs can be a nuisance and have an intimidation factor. “It’s important owners don’t get complacent about their dog’s temperament. Dogs have the potential to act differently in unfamiliar surrounds, they can easily get over excited or spooked, which

Councillor Column

I feel I should reply to the outlandish and negative comments made in The Daily Advertiser recently regarding the complex Douglas Aerospace

issues aimed at the current Councillors by some now redundant past elected members and other commentators, stating that some Councillors should resign. These comments are disappointing and totally wrong because they were premature in their criticism and the lengthy process of negotiating deals between Council and big business can be a difficult and testing

time for both parties. There have been many reports on this issue and as the community now knows, the end result is for a much better outcome. These former Councillors that have nothing better to do have short memories and seem to think they have been flawless as Councillors over the past 40 years. The current Council

has had to clean up and deal with their past mistakes, including the Hampden Bridge; the old Gasworks Site; budget blowouts regarding the Civic Theatre; and the Ernst & Young report, which led to sackings. I didn’t see any of those Councillors resign then? Also, the 430 Report by the Department of Local Government, which was scathing

in its assessment of Council at the time and identified strong factions within Council and had negative comments about the operations of Council; the resignations and sackings of senior staff and General Managers for many controversial reasons over the years; the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre, which now costs more than a million dollars per annum to maintain and

was not the model the community wanted; Robertson Oval that has failed on what was promised and was also not the model the community wanted; and the Equex Centre that was donated by the community as a multiuse equine centre and has taken 30-plus years to get traction. I do acknowledge that many good things have been done by Councillors over the
