Weekly information from us to you

CCTV project now complete CCTV has been switched on in Wagga Wagga’s CBD. Following a long-term commitment by Council to realise the project in the city, 25 cameras have been installed from Station Place to the end of Fitzmaurice Street. The safety cameras can zoom, pan and tilt with an almost 360-degree view, while the cameras at the Gurwood Street and Station Place taxi ranks are fixed. The cameras send images to Wagga Police Station where the system can be monitored by the NSW Police Force, particularly in the event of an incident or at peak times. The project was made possible by funding from Council, the Federal and State Governments and Committee 4 Wagga. “You always get a great result for the community when all three levels of

government work together,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “These 25 cameras help ensure the safety for residents and visitors and they are also a vital resource for our hardworking local police.” Superintendent Bob Noble also said CCTV is an important tool in crime prevention and prosecution. “This has been a great partnership with Council,” he said. “I think the leadership of the Council and particularly Mayor Kendall in having this project come through has been good to be a part of.” All recorded images that are not part of an ongoing police investigation, court proceeding or required for any other lawful reason will be deleted after 30 days. To view the location of the cameras and for more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/cctv.

Let’s talk Lake Albert

Wagga Wagga City Council is currently reviewing the Lake Albert Management Plan and has launched an interactive website to make it easy for the community to contribute their ideas to the discussion.

As well as providing feedback tools, the website – wagga.nsw.gov.au/lakealbert – features information about a number of

completed, ongoing and proposed works in and around Lake Albert. Director of Environment and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes, said it’s really important for the community to get involved. “Council wants to make sure that Lake Albert continues to be a space that is enjoyed by all residents and visitors to the city,” she said. “In order to achieve that we need to hear from the wider community about what their vision for the Lake Albert precinct is.” A public forum to discuss projects and issues relating to Lake Albert is also being held next

Wagga was selected some time ago as the preferred location for a regional harness racing facility. Harness Racing NSW

(HRNSW) indicated they have around $6 million available — enough to build a track but not enough for land. Council agreed to offer HRNSW suitable land owned by the ratepayers, which wasn’t easy as a large level block with good access close to the city was needed. Their preferred site was the Copland Street-Kooringal Road block opposite the netball courts. This land is

councillor.brown@wagga.nsw.gov.au

available, but would cost $3M as it could be used for industrial purposes. This is despite Council receiving no offers when it was on sale. Council searched, and the best option was a North Wagga block originally purchased as the site of a future northern lake. HRNSW has now proceeded with a development application, which is being evaluated by

the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel. A group of Councillors including myself, Cr Hiscock and Cr Poynter consider this site unsuitable as it will flood and due to various objections from neighbours. At the May 11 Council Meeting, we put forward a notice of motion to consider offering HRNSW the Copland Street site on similar terms to those for North Wagga.

The Copland Street block is near the city, airport, accommodation, major road arteries and other sporting facilities. The site is level, large and flood-free and would allow HRNSW to bring the trots to the people. There is also space for six football fields in the centre of the track, which would be an enormous benefit for Wagga. This isn’t possible at North

Wagga. There is a cost to the city with this proposal - the land is valuable - but the block is larger than the area required for a track, so Council would still have land to sell. The motion was supported by a majority of Councillors so the ball is now in the court of HRNSW.

Funny folks needed for comedy fest Calling all class clowns, practical jokers, pun enthusiasts and dad joke dags – Wagga Comedy Fest wants you. If your friends think you’re a bit funny (the ha-ha kind) or you know a colleague who amazes (or annoys) you with their quick wit, then it’s time to get a team together for Impro – The Wagga Way Competition hosted by Impro ACT. As part of next month’s inaugural comedy festival, teams of four will compete in heats to earn a spot in what will be a hilarious grand final.

If you like theatre sports or love TV shows like Thank God You’re Here, then this competition is for you. The heats will be held on June 18 and 19, with the final on Saturday 20 June. All competitors must attend a meeting and workshop on Sunday May 31 from 2pm to 5pm at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre. To take part, the team registration form is found under the Wagga Comedy Fest tab at www.civictheatre. com.au or contact the theatre on 6926 9688.

Milestone for deviation project

The Eunony Bridge Road Deviation Project has reached another milestone with the sealing of the new 1.8km stretch of road. Asphalt works for the new roundabout have been scheduled for 29-30 May and 13-14 June. To allow these works to be undertaken, the Oura Road/

Byrnes Road intersection will be closed on these days with detours in place. The $6.1M project is on track to be completed by the end of June, and will provide better heavy vehicle access from the Sturt Highway to the Bomen Industrial Park. A recent announcement

for additional funding means upgrades to existing sections of Byrnes Road and Eunony Bridge Road have also been scheduled for this calendar year. For up to date information on the project, scheduled road closures and detour maps visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/eunonydeviation.

Software shows upgraded levee designs Wagga Wagga City Council has launched software that demonstrates what an upgrade to the Main City and North Wagga Levees will look like. The upgraded levee will feature a combination of higher and wider earthen embankments and the addition of sheet piling that will act as a balustrade along the walking track. A dedicated computer has been set up in the Wagga Wagga City Library for the general public to access and view what the upgraded levee will look like as the software is too large to download online. Manager of Engineering Alex Fenwick says this is a tool that anyone can use. “The software superimposes the detailed design on top of the existing levees at 25 sites selected to provide a representation of the different types of levee construction and an indication of the visual impact in a number of key locations,” he said. “It gives people a really clear picture of how much

higher the levee will be after the upgrade and what the view will look like.” The launch of the software comes as Council staff, together with NSW Public Works, put the final touches on the detailed designs. “Council has already made applications for State and Federal Government funding to help with the $16.2M upgrade of the Main City Levee, with an announcement about successful applications expected to be made later in the year,” Mr Fenwick said. This latest milestone for the project follows significant consultations held with communities in the floodplain and the wider public in March this year, as well as recent one-on-one meetings with landholders that live in close proximity to the levees. To view the levee models, visit the Wagga Wagga City Library during opening hours and speak to a staff member.

Last chance to have say on draft plans Still time to apply for Residents have until Tuesday 26 May to have their say on funding priorities, service levels and how to plan in partnership for a more sustainable future. Wagga Wagga City Council’s draft Delivery Program and Operational Plan (DPOP) 2015-16 and Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP) 2015-2025 have been on public exhibition for the past month. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor

Rod Kendall is calling on the community to join in the conversation and share their thoughts on the draft plans. “These are two of Council’s key planning documents outlining projects and services to be delivered and how these will be funded,” he said. “Your feedback on these key planning documents will help Council provide affordable and sustainable service levels.

“This is your opportunity to have your say on projects and services and I encourage everyone to read these documents and make a submission.” Highlighted in the draft documents is a total operating expenditure budget of $108 million for 201516, with a further $15M for capital renewals and $36M for new capital expenditure. The budget is balanced for 2015-16 and 2016-17, with small surplus budgets

forecast in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 financial years. In preparing the DPOP, Council has made a substantial effort in adjusting its budgets in an attempt to meet or move towards meeting the State Government’s “Fit For the Future” benchmarks. Residents can view the draft documents and have their say online at wagga. nsw.gov.au/yoursay, or can pick up a hard copy at the Civic Centre.
